Hey Jochen most of those pictures are from the lake Balaton offensive. Since the ruskies took the pictures I would be suspect on the actual cause of the tanks demise. Most probably were abandoned for lack of fuel then destroyed by the rukies in target practice.

Were the Germans all thumbs?
Dittohead replied to ASL Veteran's topic in Combat Mission Archive #2 (2000)
And lets not forget all the exotic V-1 and V-2, jets, rocket planes the germans cranked out. Their homemade fuel plants also produced significant amounts of fuel. don't forget that Hitlers no retreat orders in the East caused the loss of large quantities of men and material. If Hitler had given Manstien free reign of German forces in the East after Kharkov blow then the Germans probably would not have lost the oil fields either till the debut of the A-bomb. Tony -
BUG: Tungsten tank trouble
Dittohead replied to Dan Weaver's topic in Combat Mission Archive #2 (2000)
Were Tungsten that plentiful in the Allied Army? I have read very little on their use. I think it would be unfair to the Germans if every eligible tank to carry tungsten had 6 to 8 rds every scenario. I think the tank not shooting its tungsten might be a way to even that out a bit. Tony -
I think Jumbo's were rare. Plus I have read in all my history books very little about the Allies use of tungsten rounds. If tungsten was so plentifull and was so deadly why would the US tankers be crying for bigger and better tanks during the war. I believe the tungsten rounds fall into the same category as gyrostabilizers. It was easier to included them for all tanks then to have some random variable at the start of each scenario to determine who had what rounds or gyros. Tony

Question about Katushas (stalin organs)
Dittohead replied to marcusm's topic in Combat Mission Archive #2 (2000)
The Ruskies had the M-8 88mm rocket, the M-13 132mm andM-30 and M-31 300mm rockets. M-8 1.1 lbs explosive - range 5900M M-13 10.8 lbs - range 8500M most common. M-30 63.7 lbs - range 2800M M-31 63.7 lbs - range 4300 m Most Ruskies used them in mass, so accuracy was not important. Most were truck mounted. Esp. lend lease trucks. Not sure of website but I have an old copy of War Machine magazine by orbis circa 1985 I used for the numbers Tony -

Can you guess which army?
Dittohead replied to IntelWeenie's topic in Combat Mission Archive #2 (2000)
Yup thats exactly how Algore and the Lying King take credit for reducing the size of the Government Workforce. Just remember that the Army is part of that workforce. Bush For President Tony -
QB - 5000 points v1.01 vs v1.02
Dittohead replied to OsinO's topic in Combat Mission Archive #2 (2000)
What no option for 3965 pt quick battles. Man they better fix this for v. 1.04. I want options at every 5 pts. -
Flotation of Tanks - did it really work this way?
Dittohead replied to istari's topic in Combat Mission Archive #2 (2000)
Don't forget that eventhough the shermans had low ground pressure they were more prone to bogging due to their narrow tracks. Whereas the Germans had learned their lessons in Russia and their tanks were fitted with wider tracks for better performance in soft ground. Not sure how BTS models tanks which are prone to bogging, but most allied tanks suffered from this. Tony -
I was just re-reading a section of "Against the Panzers" which does detail some of the street fighting between GI's and german Tanks. Most often the Gi's did not destroy the tanks with close assault tactics, instead they always managed to scrounge up a bazooka and destroy the tank from less then 200 m with a side shot. The close assault capabilties of inf may be a bit over rated IMHO. But the GI always found a way to get the job done. Tony

Why was the Tiger I`s armour never "side-sloped"?
Dittohead replied to a topic in Combat Mission Archive #2 (2000)
The tiger had 100mm of the Finest Krupp steel why would it need to be sloped against the inferior Allied guns? -
Great Maps. Just wondering if Curt Schilling , one of the few high profile(rich) wargamers out there, has seen CM? Tony

O/T - National Defense Article at CNN
Dittohead replied to JTMauney's topic in Combat Mission Archive #2 (2000)
As with most things on the Clinton News Network they show little interest in obtaining facts. The only thing that matters is the sensationalism of the story. I.E. Tailwind. Remember that during the Gulf War the CNN expert on the US Military and policy was Larry King I think. They are a bunch of Left wing losers who don't care about the truth. Tony -
I think one way to combat these "gamey" recon tactics would be to reduce the cost of barbed wire entanglements or have a simple barbed wire barricade as an option. Most units in during the war when on the defensive always dug in and put up some form of barbed wire obstacles along the avenues of approach. At 15 pts a crack the entanglements are a tad expensive, should be 3 pts or so. And include felled tree barricades as well. Used extensively by the Germans. Nothing like driving around the corner and seeing some wire. Maybe we could get this modified in one of the future patches. Tony

Quick Battle Allied forces not so Random?
Dittohead replied to Dittohead's topic in Combat Mission - Tech Support
When I play as the Germans I get the AI poles. Tony -
I would like the ability to create a very dense forest in a quick battle. I dont think the current heavy forest setting is enough. Would like to see about twice the density in trees as is currently available. Tony
-
Whenever I set up a quick battle and let the AI select the Allied forces it always picks the Poles(I know I can select the nationality but sometimes I forget). I guess cause the Poles are the cheapest. But the AI should select nationality then worry about buying stuff. Also I would like to see an option for a really dense forest. Maybe up to twice the density of the Heavy forest. Tony

My case against artillery effectiveness in CM

However if you are dug in with good overhead cover on you foxhole then the art. barrage in the woods would have minimal effect. Tony
