  1. HerrJung: If I didn't know any better from that extensively informative and specs filled post I'd say welcome back Fionn .. I could be wrong though?
  2. Didn't know about the different bolt or rate of fire in the MG42 versions no. I never had problems with recoil on the gun but then again the manual clearly says "half second to one second" bursts only. In the recruit period I was my teams MG1-man because of my physique so I must confess I've shot several thousand rounds with the gun. On the firing range you could sometimes hear the officers screaming my name for my long bursts tho heheh.. kids like plenty of boom-boom Do you have any other versions of the MG42 too eg FG42 in the bundeswehr? and what kind of weapons do the infantry teams in the bundeswehr use, squad weapons etc? We still use the old trusty (A)G-3 built on license from H&K. Last I heard we're after renewing our arsenals assault guns but I think we'll go for the H&K G36 (purely my own predictions). (Strange but Norway uses only German made guns G3, MP-5, Glock 17 etc).
  3. When I got that message I was thinking maybe the gun could still fire because it wasn't destroyed only damaged. Tried to hit enter to find out more info about it and it still showed up in the status so I asumed it still worked but it didnt?
  4. Anyone remember the Sven Hassel books? Well they're not realistic and I don't think they try to be but that's the series that made me interested in books without pictures as a boy. I've read some rather disturbing news about the author in the recent years after that but the books are after all quite entertaining and very funny at times. No arguing over that the guy can tell a lie at least. 5. I want one too CoolJ but that will never happen because americans isn't interested in the eastern front. After all the american market decides wheather a film is a flop or not.
  6. If I'm not much mistaken one of the reasons the germans took so long time getting captured vehicles back in action was because they usually fitted them with radios, new hatches etc (anyone seen the strange protruding man hatch on the captured T-34's?). They usually gave them to rearguard, garrison units etc after they were re-equipped anyway. Think I read about this on webpage once. Achtung Panzer ?
  7. Major Tom a sniper in the bell tower is so obvious that it's actually safe. No enemies would think a sniper would be so stupid as to hide in a belltower so they wouldn't even look for one there
  8. As far as my expirience with the MG3 (modern mod of the MG42, only minor differences on the weapon because the germans made a legendary weapon in the first place) the only difference between the medium and heavy versions are the pods, bi- and tripod. Mounted on a tripod the MG is much more stable (absorbs more recoil) and got a better sighting mechanism. The versions we used got the same bolt's for both versions so I don't think there should be a difference in bullet rate (the sucker already got 17-22 rounds a second, no wonder the allies called it "ripping canvas"). Norwegian doctrine is to change pipe every 200 rounds (which we never did anyway, it was more like every 400 rounds). For this the loader (usually called MG2-man) got an asbestos glove + a spare pipe. If I remember this correctly the standard ammo mount should be 600 rounds pr infantry team. 200 rounds with MG1-man, 200 rounds with MG2-man and 200 rounds with Squad member 3 but usually we could take us much as we were prepared to carry (I think it was. Been some years since I did this). I think all the guys that has been shooting with this weapon will agree that the gun has surprisingly little recoil when deployed correct. That means prone on the ground, bipod firmly in the ground then you press your body forward so the gun is secured tightly between your shoulder and the bipod. The left arm is shoulder on the ground and hand on a notch on the lower side of the butt, pressing the gun towards your right shoulder. If done correct the gun is steady as anything. The empty casings fall straight down so the MG-2 man must always keep an eye on the ground beneath the gun to move away empty casings or they can actually pile up so the gun can malfunction. I've also heard about an MG2-man getting his fingers in the feeding mechanism while feeding bullets because of the tremendous ROF. Well I'd better stop now I'm rambling away here. Just thought some might find it interesting to hear
  9. Goanna: Hotseat means 2 players on the same machine. You make one turn and then you'll go drink a cup of coffee while the other guy set's up his turn. There are some beta testers with a much more recent version than us yes and they got all the goodies in the game.
  10. I saw the German movie Stalingrad years ago and I think it's totally stunning. Before SPR it was my all time high WW2 movie. I was in Germany this summer when I went to a shop to pick it up but it didn't have english subtitles and my German is pretty lame so I didn't buy it. Did you know that the guys behind Das boot made it?
  11. Heheh.. that's the guy I've seen everywhere in CC4. You don't got one with Wurf's too ?
  12. Scott: So they're picking up the BTS model ?
  13. I've just been catching up on some posts and seen some small revolutions happening around this forum. Sadly I've seen that Fionn has decided to leave us because he think's people has treated him unfairly.. well. Sadly because he obviously know's a lot about ww2 like I have mentioned earlier. I have on no occasions been rude to anyone (or in their face) on this board simply stating my opinions on things and been called several (personal) things. My "crime" is that I've disagreed with someone, something I should think I'm entitled too if that is my beliefs. I've also said that if someone says something I disagree with even if it's Steve I'll tell them I disagree and I see nothing wrong in that, afterall I consider this board very democratic. Now all of you think about this hard, has the people that feels stepped on behaved exemplary all the time themselves! (no ? mark because we're finished with this.. at least I am).
  14. Ehhh what's the catch ? If you d/l the game you secretly give them the right to your pc ? Can't believe someone is giving us a game
  15. - Another factor in ignoring most eval requests is that most amateur reviewers spend more time criticizing a game for what they wish was in it than they do describing what it does deliver. God how true that is. I haven't actually thought of that myself but now that it's mentioned it's spot on.
  16. No matter how many copies they printed for a console they'd never sell them all because people that own's console machines aren't after realistic games.
  17. Fionn: Don't tell me I was getting personal here because you where the one getting personal. If you disagree I suggest you scroll up some posts and find out for yourself. I couldn't care less if you where Eisenhowers advisor if you say something that I disagree with you can count on that I will let you know and that goes for Steve (or anyone else) too for that matter. No matter how much paper you got saying that 16 kg's can't be run with I'll tell you that even I can do that + I got first hand experience with something similar. Moon: Like I replied to Steve I have absolutely no problems whatsoever with the fact that the shrecks can't run. I wasn't even after changing the code in the game. I understand the obvious shortcomings of the system and respect that, it's when Fionn is starting to tell that Shrecks in an historical sense can't be run with I'm disagreeing with. I'm still convinced you can run with the shreck + ammo. Everything is relative tho.. how long, well only the individuals can tell. At least a couple of hundred meters... at least.
  18. sounds very interesting. The game isn't finished and pple are starting with mod's. Mod's are great if you ask me it's just that developers usually don't like them heheh
  19. JonS: The guy hauling the ammo had two plastic containers with 3 shot a piece and he moved just as quick as the guy with the Carl Gustav (I even think I read somewhere that usually the CG-team has 3 men, one aiming, one loader which has 2x3 rounds ammo and a ammo hauler with 2x3 rounds ammo but I'm not saying this is right because I don't remember it clearly). I remember one time we had prepared an ambush site with 3 CG teams, one 50 cal. and 4 rifle squads w/MG3's. That was just fun but when we was moving back to base they didn't drive us. All those weapons was very heavy to carry and we even switched weapons between us occasionally. But not being able to run for small distances with the CG or ammo, forget about it. One guy even said he could start carrying the CG and we could switch when he got tired, well he carried it all the way to camp through 60km of hills and swamp. (this is all from what I remember). In the Norwegian Army all the men in the infantry should have training with all the squad weapons available that means MG3 (mg42), Carl Gustav, LAW (M-72), Cal.50 MG etc. I haven't shot live rounds with a Carl Gustav myself but under movement we always carried the equipment (to the joy of the officers i reckon) we're using. No live ammo for the Gustav I admit but we had blank rounds with the same weight in the plastic containers. Usually the guys in the support companies were driven but that's not the case in recruit period. The 50 cal. MG was the worst, we all dreaded it's weight even the tripod was a pain. As for Fionn I don't have to prove anything for you, in fact let me turn the question around. Why don't you prove that the Shreck teams can't run? You haven't proven that they can't, have you? Just because you say something doesn't automatically make it right does it? 5 Shreck rounds is rougly 16 kg's and it's even been mentioned that you could carry it on your back. I don't feel an urge to prove anything for you I'm just saying that the Shreck units are moving way to slow taken my expirience with similar systems and i'm sticking with that. I don't even remember the weight of the CG rounds in the first place. Now don't you think it's quite irrelevant wheather you would want to know me or not? Who do you think you are anyway?
  20. I think the few that are into wargaming are "burning" more for their games than the casual rts man. And it's kind of hard to argue over the range or damage of the Obelisk of licht (as someone called it) because it doesnt exist in the first place.
  21. Fionn: You're still wrong and you can preech about this until you get blue in the face and you'll still be wrong. Why? I tell you why because 16 kg's isn't much for normal sized men. Neither is 20 and if you get to put in a backpack like Rune says you can even run faster than the guy holding the tube. It doesn't bother me the fact that the guy in the game doesn't run it's the arrogant way you're telling us they can't (even when some of us have real life expirience with similar systems). Now I don't see myself as a Rambo or anything but 16 kg's hah.. anyday.
  22. Yeah and I could tell the "Royal Norwegian PC Wargaming Testing Association" to take contact too. I bet they're interested
  23. Steve I understand that you have to draw the line somewhere considering some of the limitations to the system and I respect that, it's not like it's ruining my gaming expirience or anything. We do use the Carl Gustav in the Norwegian Army and the guys that are trained with it follow the rest of the infantry quite easily. Of course they can't climb, sprint, run as far etc like the rest but for small distances they're almost as fast as the rest. All this + that the Carl Gustav is heavier makes up my mind about this. Again it all depends on how the movements are modelled in the game. [This message has been edited by howardb (edited 12-07-99).]
