Reading this thread reminds me of the indestructible Kubelwagen that I encountered in the scenario "Out on a Limb". Although struck perhaps by a hundred or two bullets fired at close range from various angles, no harm befell it until the driver tried to dismount, a fatal mistake.
I also recall seeing quite a number of photos of Jeeps with their windshields folded down. Now I wonder if that was to avoid flying shards of glass. It also occurs to me that folding it down would also avoid a shiny reflection to a possible observer.

Yes, though not to the extent you present here. How far they spread may be dependent on terrain; I notice that in this example they are on open terrain with no cover or concealment. In closer terrain, like forests, they stay closer together. This may have something to do with ease of communication between the teams.
Oh, and BTW, I agree wholeheartedly with what Warts says about 'to' and 'too' along with the many other barbarisms that have become common since the rise of popular telecommunications.

From what I have heard from car owners, they began doing that 20-30 years ago. And every computer I've ever owned has come with a proviso that it must be serviced by an authorized service representative or the warrantee is voided.

That would be my suggestion, especially if as you say, "... it tends to make softer sounds louder and the loud sounds stay loud." Why not tone down the whole mess?

It may be more believable if you reflect on however many of those are from artillery short rounds and the like. Still, it sounds a bit high to me too.

That might be no bad thing: send the smoke in one direction and slow move in another. While your opponent is focussed on area firing into the smoke and waiting to see what was behind it, you could be setting up to do your job. Might work once anyway.

Then you might like a book I am just now finishing: Anatomy of a Battle by Kenneth Macksey. If you are not already familiar with it, it is a fictionalized account of the opening day of OPERATION BLUECOAT, and is probably one of his best. It focuses on the personnel on both sides of a battalion-sized engagement in hedgerow country. The thing that fascinated me was how he shows how personality traits of individual soldiers played out in the fighting. They definitely have an effect, but there are so many of them that they kind of balance out, so you don't get a phony situation where one soldier or commander causes the battle to swing one way or the other. They all have their effects, which grow out of a brew of strengths and/or weaknesses. The book truly lives up to its title.

And I'd second that. Having something solid, not just foliage, between your unit and the enemy is the way to go. So as Harry says, try to route your unit through depressions, ditches, behind walls—even low walls for crawling—berms, mounds of earth, anything solid. Very thick foliage can also work, but you have to be careful. In the scenario you refer to it is deceptive and does not afford nearly as good concealment as you might expect it to.
