  1. This is definitely a bug which is reproducible using the instructions renaldo1 provided, thanks for the effort. Those dog-leg corner bocage pieces are preventing the gun turning like it wants to I think. I've reported it on the beta forum. If anyone saw this in other terrain types please post how to reproduce it.
  2. If you couldn't get info from the unit panel you could just scoot the camera over there and look at the 3D models, and there's the rub. There is no generic mis-identified or partially identified 3D model, what you see is displayed as it is and where it is, so German HQ with peaked caps, Gunners carrying a MG. I agree having less info in the unit panel is a worthy idea, but it is not the end of the story.
  3. Animation aside it is a good point. The assistant to a MG has his weapon shouldered all the time the weapon is firing, maybe that can be implemented for shrecks and zooks? EDIT: I've posted this to the beta forum. It is a borderline bug and there seems to be behaviour in the game already that could be leveraged to fix it. Fingers crossed.
  4. Even with relative spotting there is still the player's god's eye hovering over the battle so yes it is gamey to advance something deliverately unupported without any hope of survival. Even the very dangerous job of advance recce was done in enough force to fight or disengage from whatever was found. Maybe one jeep is gamey but two armed jeeps is ok . I do feel that this should be agreed to beforehand though. It used to be someone would declare "I try to play realistically" when agreeing a setup. If you discover halfway that your opponent is beinga d1ck, cross him off the list.
  5. How's this, took about two minutes from the above pic.
  6. You could easily make one from this: http://wesclark.com/jw/zulu_brits.jpg
  7. The LOS is not "completely different", but one thing to be aware of is that the "future waypoint" LOS is based on the stance of the unit when you check it, so if it is standing it will be higher than if it is prone. The LOS tool giving a rough idea and then having a bit of fine tuning when you get there is pretty realistic imo.
  8. Yes LOS is checked from different heights before any more refined check is made. That can easily be seen when a tank spots over the top of a wall. The heights are not limitless though, iow spotting is not exactly WYSIWYG and its best to come to terms with that . There are only a few height: Prone, Kneeling, Standing (also used for jeeps etc), tank height and IIRC another higher tank setting. There is also settings for each story of a building. WIthout more specific info about what you are seeing its hard to say if there is a problem.
  9. Are you talking about WWII era grenades? The M9A1 HEAT rifle grenade has an inertia firing pin in the back and if a real bullet hits that it is lights out for sure. To be clear I'm not talking about the gun exploding I'm talking about the grenade detonating in your face.
  10. I guess the only way we'll know is for you or someone else to do some testing. Some of the variables that I can think of: Related to "Motivation" * Ability to prevent degradation of morale. * Ability to rally already rattled troops. Related to "Experience" * Influence on combat abilities like arty strike times and accuracy. * Influence on accuracy of fire eg Tanks or ATG hits. Just as a guess I'd think that any given unit would only be influenced by their direct superior HQ ie the one that shows the C2 links icons. But then maybe a low HQ could be bumped up by a higher HQ and pass its bonus along. There are so many variables along the way that it would be very difficult and time consuming to get meaningful results I would think.
  11. Of course you are right, I'm aware of their rarity too. Still, they were there and are cool.
  12. I think its guaranteed to be more disatrous to mix up the two and fire a live round into the back of a mounted rifle grenade.
  13. I'd like to see this one, there is just as much rationale for including this as there is for including the Puma imo. I would also note that there was enough to justify the inclusion of H39s and PzII L in CMBO. I'd rather see R35's though. Or both.
  14. Don't forget a lot of troops in WWII avoided artillery by not being under it so dropping it on the heads of men on a CM map might not produce the real world results. There are plenty of tales of German defenders reoccupying foxholes after a barrage lifts. Foxholes do seem to be way undermodelled though. There were some really serious dugouts and fighting positions in Normandy and the stuff in the game doesn't seem to replicate that.
  15. http://combatmission.wikia.com/wiki/Combat_Mission:_Battle_for_Normandy There already was a Combat Mission Page on Wikia so I just added CMBN and put a bit of a framework together there.
  16. I use quick for almost everything bar some special circumstances and I have read many CMx2 veterans do the same. Move is the sort of command where your guys are in the sort of terrain that you select them all and give a massive group march command. It is also supposed to match the speed of slow vehicles I think. Slow is tiring but the biggest thing getting your guys spotted and killed in all the other movement types is that they are standing up. I use slow to crawl that last bit up to a ridgeline or treeline. Crack and Green are separate settings to fitness AIUI so your green troops can be very fit and your crack troops can be exhausted.
  17. I'm surprised this hasn't mentioned more often, playing hotseat against yourself is always my recommendation to newbies. Firstly you can be sure you won't be steamrollered, but mostly you can see the effects of your fire, how well one side spots the other moving and stationary. It also eliminates the fog of war that we all get as players. We imagine that the computer's very calculations are set against us, that there are a million Germans out there and your supression fire is doing nothing to them. In reality an enemy squad may be more torn up than you think and you'll see how best to time your assaults.
  18. Achieving local fire superority is just as important whether you are sitting on a hill or on the second story of a building. I tend to use buildings for observation but a building with good lines of sight is not a good place to fight from IMO. I get my scouts out of there early. One thing CM doesn't model is even a rudimentary hardening of buildings which would certainly be the case if defenders spent much time in a town. Sandbags loopholes etc etc.
  19. A Normandy highway would not be this wide, the regular paved road tile will do fine for a two lane highway. The highway tiles are hand-me-downs from CMSF where you had eight lane modern highways. The cobbled highway makes a better Parisian boulevard.
  20. I think there should be a decent chance of them bailing without any weapons. Its one thing to jump out if your tank breaks down and take the grease gun and all your gear with you, but when your hair is on fire and your buddy's brains are all over you I think grabbing the gun would be low priority. edit: What JonS said.
  21. I don't know who you are referring to specifically, but all myself and others are doing is injecting some facts into the discussion. I can understand the OP being POed about his box being damaged, I can understand being POed finding the manual underwhelming, but I can't understand "this box sux its not what you advertised its plastic and sh1t". The box is exactly what was advertised by repeatedly naming and linking to a specific brand name of metal case. Disclaimer: I don't have one yet either, but I did follow the preorder announcement and was curious enough to follow the direct links to see what a Steelbook TM was. I removed my quote considering your post is now edited. You're right some guy went off half-cocked and said words to the effect of "this is just flimsy plastic with some bits of metal stuck on". That is the inaccurate description imo.
  22. People can really get carried away, some people were expecting something else/more, I'm not sure what exactly, but if you see someone say it is all made of plastic that is BS. A steelbook has 95% metal with a slick looking screen-printed and sometimes embossed metal front and back, it has a plastic spine and plastic inner to hold the disc. DVD collectors think they are the ducks nuts it seems. But they are just a case for your disc, they don't do tricks. All the brands of premium metal DVD cases will have a plastic insert. Some have metal hinges but not all. The Simpsons movie collectors edition I bought has a metal box but just has a regular version plastic DVD case inside. http://www.bluraysteelbooks.com/steelbook-resources/
  23. This aerial view from this siteshows Les Moulins and it doesn't look like there was much left standing there. I'd say the occasional damaged building would be all. The whole place would have looked like a giant excavation/building site by the looks of all the dirt and fortifications. Another thing that a lot of CM map-makers tend to forget is there would have been many many craters around the area.
  24. It would be fair to acknowledge that the term Steelbook TM was used in all Battlefront communications and there were even links through to the steelbook website. I think battlefront gave customers every chance to educate themselves on what the case was actually going to be. It is a prety standard "premium" DVD case. So I don't get the complaints "its plastic!!1!"
