  1. Sounds like you may need to install/reinstall your video drivers. OpenGL drivers typically come with your video drivers. On occasion (and somewhat rarely) I've seen a Windows Update version of some video drivers possibly not have the OpenGL files that may normally be part of the driver installation. However I don't really see that anymore. What Windows version are you running and what video card/chip do you have ?
  2. Sorry to take so long to look at this. I loaded up the saved campaign on my 'full 4.0 installation' of CMBN and was able to play it for 28 minutes without issue (saved the game at that point). I played the game in a fairly passive manner, not issuing a lot of or detailed commands. I played this on a PC with Windows 7 64-bit and an i5 2500k with 16GB of RAM and a GeForce GTX 770 video card (with NOT the latest drivers). Everything played fine and I even played it twice; the first time for about 6 minutes before quitting the game... I had forgotten when exactly you were experiencing the crashing, so I had to load it up again and play for a bit longer to make sure I was duplicating the issue. This install should have been a '4.0 full' installer, but I can double-check on another installation that I'm fairly certain would also be that.
  3. the 'Wondershare Studio' is some sort of collage/scrapbook software that appears to get installed with other programs. If you're not using it, then I suggest disabling it (though it likely isn't the cause of the issue here). We've seen problems with 'Nahimic' audio software. This often gets installed with some MSI laptops/motherboards and other systems. I can't recall off-hand if the software prevented the running of CM or caused problems while it was running. I don't recall any problems with the Realtek Audio Manager (usually a 'red speaker' icon in your lower right tray). If it isn't being used, it can also be disabled without affecting your audio. The 'chrome' I assume is simply a Chrome browser being launched at startup. Removing it may speed up boot up times, unless you almost always head to the internet on each boot. The 'Delayed Launcher' may be some Intel software that is involved with 'system restores'. You could disable that and it supposedly should make booting a bit faster. I personally haven't really seen too many problems with Windows Defender. I do use other anti-virus security programs, so they typically run the security on the computer while Windows Defender acts more as a reminder service about updates or security being off/disabled. As a primary/sole security system you could add an 'exclusion' for the CM executables/folders in Windows Defender. If you're running a separate anti-virus/security program, then you could do something similar for it. However exceptions/exclusions really are geared for when the program will not run at all. It is somewhat rare for the security software to interfere once the program is running (at least in the manner that is being seen here). Are you overclocking your video card or CPU at all ? If so, you may want to down-clock them or return them to the default clock speed and see if that makes any difference. 'Factory overclocks' typically should be fine (since they're the defaults as programmed by the manufacturer). You may want to run some memory diagnostics on your computer (typically requiring a reboot into the diagnostic's OS), such as the free edition of Memtest86. There are some tests with the memory diagnostics that can cause almost any memory to not pass (certain 'hammer' tests), but most tests should be applicable and if there are errors you may need to replace your RAM or possibly change settings/voltages on it in your BIOS/UEFI setup.
  4. When the games crash during the command phase are you issuing any particular type of order ? Are you issuing orders, looking around the map etc. or are you leaving the game idle (possible power savings issue) and then it is crashing ? Is this CMBN or is it another game or possibly is this happening with several/all of the CM games ? Do you have anything running in the background (utilities, browsers, etc.) ? Do you know what is loading up a startup ? You may want to check by right-clicking on the Start Menu and selecting 'Task Manager' from the popup menu. Then go to the 'Startup' tab and in here will be a list of programs/applets/utilities that launch at startup. If you would like to remove an item from launching at startup, right click on its listing and select 'Disable' from the popup menu and it should NOT load the next time you launch Windows.
  5. Can you send/link the files and I'll check it out with what I have. My installs are basically the 'full' 4.0 installers, but I could install another instance using the separate installers if necessary.
  6. I don't know the details of this campaign, but as a starting point, what version of CMBN are you running ? What modules/battle packs do you have installed and activated ? If you have version 4.0, did you use the 'full' 4.0 installer (which installs just about everything) or was this installed utilizing separate installers for each module/battle pack ? Are you running this on a Mac or a PC ? Is this a laptop or a desktop ? If it is a PC, then what version of Windows, what video card and what driver do you have installed ?
  7. Typically each license key of the current copy-protection system that CMBS uses allows for 4 activations. After using those 4 activations you would need to contact the Helpdesk to add an activation to that license key. The previous copy-protection system, called 'elicense', allowed for two concurrent activations. After which you would have to 'unlicense' one or more of the previous installations to free up an activation. The current copy-protection system does NOT have an unlicense function. You simply use up activations and then need to request more. Are you getting a specific error when you attempt to activate or does nothing happen ? If that latter, then it may be security software interfering as Erwin mentioned. You would need to temporarily disable that security software and attempt activating again. Once that is done then I would suggest adding an exception or an entry into a 'whitelist' for your security software so that it doesn't interfere with the game again.
  8. I would generally guess video driver updates, but I'm uncertain on this. Is this computer a desktop or a laptop ? Does the mouse have any unique drivers for it or just what Windows 10 has for it ? I suggest downloading the latest applicable Nvidia driver, uninstalling your current driver (which may require a reboot) and then reinstall the driver, but select the 'custom' option and make sure to check the box for a 'clean install'. This should delete previous version files and registry entries (supposedly).
  9. v. 2.10 is the latest version of CMBS. The "v2.10 Patch Installer" is just an installer for that particular patch (v.2.10) and NOT a patch that is 'beyond' what v. 2.10 is. In other words there is no patch beyond 2.10.

It's likely that this won't resolve the issue, but it is worth a try. Normally any issues with DEP (Data Execution Prevention) result in a '0xc0000005' error. While it wasn't necessary for me, you may want to check out the Knowledgebase article on DEP. Make sure to add the 'runservice.exe' file to DEP to see if that makes any difference. It also likely that DEP is not the issue here, but again something that may be worth trying. I would assume that you would run into other issues with this computer if there was some sort of widespread issue, but you may also want to try the System File Checker by opening a command prompt (cmd.exe) and typing in (without quotes) 'sfc /scannow'. Unfortunately this isn't a cure all and it is possible to get errors that don't have a simple/good resolution.
  12. I was able to get the entire CMSF series installed and activated in Windows 10 Pro v. 1709 ('CE'). Avast needed to be disabled in order to install and activate the game/modules. Once the game was installed, activated and patched exceptions were added in Avast for the game directory (the individual game executable files didn't seem to need an explicit exception) and the game needed to be run with 'Run as administrator' privileges. 'Runservice.exe' also did NOT need an Avast exception. Nothing was changed in regards to Windows Defender (whatever version installs with Windows 10 Pro). CMSF was installed to its default directory within the 'Program Files (x86)' directory. Avast did flag the 1.21 patch before it was disabled (something it and a lot of other security programs do with that executable). No other CM games were installed on this computer. The only security software installed is the free version of Avast and Malwarebytes (and whatever Windows Defender consists of). This computer also didn't have a lot of other software installed. Just browsers, Libre Office, Acrobat, Flash, possibly Java, etc. The 'LicCtrl Service' was started and running with no errors (a key to the problem being seen here). The 'runservice.exe' file is 16,384 bytes in size and has no special attributes set. The 'msvcr71.dll' (a Microsoft C Runtime library DLL) is 348,160 bytes in size, located in the 'C:\Windows' directory and has no special attributes set.
  13. So 'runservice.exe' is present in your 'C:\Windows' directory, but you still get an error trying to start the 'LicCtrl Service' is that correct ? If you believe that the Windows Defender security software is causing a problem, then add an exception for 'runservice.exe' in Windows Defender. Have you added an exception within Avast for 'runservice.exe' ? Typically I wouldn't think it would be necessary, but you may want to try it just in case it may be interfering for some reason.
  14. I see that you have some sort of McAfee security software in your browser. Perhaps disabling that temporarily (and possibly other security software) might allow the download to proceed. Was the 'Runservice.exe' file in your 'C:\Windows' directory ? The 'msvcr71.dll' file also needs to be in the 'C:\Windows' directory (I don't think it will do anything being in the game's main directory). If the 'Runservice.exe' file is not in the Windows directory, then the 'LicCtrl Service' will not run because that file is what the service is. Without this being able to run, then the games that are eLicense copy-protected will not run (CMSF and CMA).

So for these programs you have already modified the 'Properties' > 'Compatibility' tab for a Compatibility setting of Windows 7 (or something along those lines) AND checked the 'Run as Administrator' box in this tab ? Have you also checked to make sure that the 'Runservice.exe' file is in the Windows directory and that Avast is set to not interfere with it (it normally doesn't, but just in case) ? Also make sure that the 'Runservice.exe' is set to run within the 'Services' control panel (right-click on the Start Menu and select 'Computer Management', then 'Services and Applications' and finally 'Services'). You need to look for the 'LicCtrl Service' and see that it is 'Started'. If necessary stop and restart the service. eLicense has two DLL files associated with it, 'elicen40.dll' and 'msvcr71.dll'. The latter DLL file is something created by Microsoft. The 'msvcr71.dll' file will be in the Windows directory along with the 'runservice.exe' file. The 'elicen40.dll' file will be in the root of the CMSF and CMA game directories. I don't know if either of these files get called up AFTER the games have been activated other than to unlicense and reactivate the games. You can possibly attempt to unlicense the games and see if the dialog box comes up. If it does, then I would assume that eLicense in general is working (or at least the DLLs are present and functional in a certain manner). Unlike the copy-protection system with the later CM games, you can unlicense and reactivate without worrying about an activation count of any sort (other than remembering where you have the games installed and activated - on different computers or partitions).
  16. I have Windows 10 Pro 64-bit v. 1709 installed on an Acer desktop with a Pentium G2020 CPU (Ivy Bridge based CPU - 3rd generation Core). The Intel HD Graphics on this unit can utilize the latest Intel driver (Intel's version number: 15.33.45.4653, dated 5/23/2017). Installing CMBB 1.04 and activating has worked fine on this machine. It only required 'Run as administrator' and the Alt-Tab out of the 3D screen and re-maximizing the game for it to run properly at full speed. This was running a 1280 x 1024 screen (which was the initial offered resolution too).
  17. What are you comparing the 'open ground' terrain bitmaps to ? Here's a Youtube video of a CMBB game and I assume your terrain looks much like this ?: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vRXnWeyqdQQ CM1 series games generally stretched out bitmaps for the ground and were often of lower quality. I'm not certain how much better they may look with mods of higher resolution replacements (and the performance effect they may have). Both your Asus ZenBook and the MS Surface Pro 3 utilize Intel video (CPU integrated), but of different generations. I don't have any machines that are running 3rd Generation or higher Intel integrated video and Windows 10, so I don't have the exact environment to compare. I might have one I can setup next week with an i3 3rd generation and see what kind of results I get with it (though it is an earlier generation compared to what you have with the MS Surface Pro 3).
  18. I just tried CMBB 1.04 with a Windows 10 installation using a GeForce GTX 770 running a monitor at 1920 x 1200. In this case the first offered resolution was 1600 x 1200 (I forget the refresh rate). This would be the maximum resolution that both CMBB and my monitor/video card supported. The only thing I needed to do was launch it with the 'Run as administrator' option to get it to launch. In the case of your Asus Zenbook UX330UA, Asus mentions that the display resolution is 3200 x 1800. If that is what you're really running at, then there is a resolution higher than 1600 x 1200 that you may get offered. I believe (but I can't recall accurately) that the maximum resolution offered may be 2048 x 1536 (QXGA). This is probably what CMBB should offer as the first resolution. When 800 x 600 is offered to you, does it come up pretty quick or does it take awhile before you see this resolution ? If it comes up pretty quick (soon after launching CM), then it is possible that CM is not recognizing the display properties very well and is offering the lowest resolution that it supports. If it takes awhile, then it is possible that other resolutions are being offered, but for some reason aren't being seen to allow for selection (I assume that this IS NOT what you are experiencing). If only 800 x 600 is being offered then you may want to see if there are any newer drivers that MIGHT help with this. Asus Zenbook UX330UA downloads You'll need to select your particular model (the generic 'UX330UA' may work) and your OS (Windows 10 64-bit). You'll probably have to check to see what your current video driver is and what your BIOS version is. If this is a recent purchase, then these may already be up-to-date. As I mentioned (and linked to) earlier the Intel-provided video driver likely will not work, but you can download and attempt to install it just in case (you'll typically get a message that the device is not recognized or 'OEM' and that the driver is not compatible and can't be installed). Looking at the documentation for the ZenBook I see options in the BIOS (but the manual doesn't show them all and describe them). In the BIOS/UEFI setup go to 'Advanced' and in here go to 'Graphics Configuration'. In here you MIGHT be able to specify more dedicated memory to the graphics (which MIGHT help CMBB).
  19. So you're in the 3D battlefield when you Alt-Tab and re-maximizing the game results in a completely black screen ? Actually doing it while in the 3D battlefield view is what I recommended earlier. Alt-Tab'ing while in the menus is where you're more likely to run into issues with the screen becoming completely black. Alt-Tab'ing generally should improve graphical performance (I'm not sure why). When you Alt-Tab out of the game it minimizes to the application bar, is that correct ? Clicking on CM while in the application bar re-maximizes it, correct ? Do you move around with the 'arrow-keys' on anything to see if the screen redraws ? I don''t know if it makes any difference, but is this copy of CM something recently purchased from Battlefront.com (and therefore version 1.04) or is it an older copy using disc-based copy-protection (a pre-2008 purchase from Battlefront.com or a retail CDV version) ? 1.04 updated a few DirectX calls that usually involved spinning screens and some other issues that occurred with DirectX 10 capable video cards and Windows Vista (the 'newest' Windows OS at the time). Eventually driver updates fixed the issue and 1.04 wasn't required.
  20. At what point are you Alt-Tab'ing, is it in the initial menus or the 3D battlefield view ? If you are Alt-Tab'ing in the menu screens, possibly wait until you get to the 3D battlefield before Alt-Tab'ing. If you're doing this in the 3D battlefield view, do you move around with the 'arrow-keys' or something to try to get the screen to draw again ? Perhaps Alt-Tab'ing once or a few times might help. What Windows OS and video card/chip and drivers are you running with ? ** Beaten to the punch ** If you are in the menus, what GerryCMBB said is applicable - move your mouse around and the buttons on the screen will often highlight/redraw once the mouse moves over them and you can then click on the appropriate one to go forward to the next screen/menu.
  21. Correct. This is what showed up when I selected my 3.0 Upgrade to download. It is all of the individual files of that upgrade (for installation). So all of them are necessary (and will come down as one .zip file) for the 3.0 Upgrade.
  22. To my knowledge the 4.0 Engine does NOT improve TCP/IP play. There is nothing different with this engine in regards to TCP/IP connectivity or stability over the previous 3.0 Engine. Since individual machines are hosting the gameplay (rather than some large, high-speed, well connected server), there are bound to be some limitations on how fast data can be moved between the host and clients (despite having a high speed home internet connection). You may want to limit yourself to smaller battles and maps since a lot of data has to go back and forth. Larger battles and maps may generate a bit too much data for the game to be stable and lag-free over most internet connections available to the public.
  23. I purchased the CMBN 3.0 Upgrade in October 2014. Finding that particular purchase in my order listing and clicking on the link for the 3.0 Upgrade eventually took me to the following screen for the Sharefile download of the 3.11 Upgrade. It is actually all of the separate files for the download, so checking the 'Select All' checkbox and then clicking the 'Download' button. It downloaded the approx. 10GB file. Are you not seeing the following for the 3.0 Upgrade purchase ?
  24. Yes, the resolution selection process should offer resolutions higher than 800 x 600 (which is the minimum for CMBB and CMAK). Generally the process starts at the highest resolution that both CM and your display supports. Most of the time this may be a 1600 x 1200 resolution (there is one, much higher resolution, but it is rare that someone has a monitor that supports it). The resolutions are generally 4:3 type ratios; no true widescreen resolutions are supported. Initially a high refresh rate may be tried that may not be visible on your display (or come up as a scrambled screen or what may look like two displays overlapping - old TV-like issues in appearance). The refresh rate that is tried may be up to the display driver. With an internal laptop display I don't know how high of a refresh rate may be tried. Sometimes this may start at 160Hz and the go down from there. Once a resolution with a 60Hz refresh rate is tried and not selected, then the next offered resolution will be the next step lower, but at the highest refresh rate offered and work down from there. Once you reach 800 x 600 at 60Hz and you don't select it, an error is generated (rather than starting over). You just have to restart CM again in order to go through the resolution selection process again. If you've selected a resolution already, but want to try another one, then simply delete the 'preferences' file in the CM directory (if the game is installed in the 'Program Files (x86)' directory, then the file may be hidden in a 'virtual redirect' directory - along with any saved games, etc.).
  25. I would believe that the games should run on the Intel HD Graphics 620. While the newer CM2 series of games may have problems with Intel graphics, the older DirectX based CM1 series should generally be fine with it. I don't know if your Asus Zenbook can use the Intel provided drivers, but here are the latest ones for the HD Graphics 620: Intel HD Graphics driver for 7th Generation CPUs, Windows 10 64-bit If these refuse to install (which may be very likely), then check the Asus Support site to see if there is a newer driver for your particular ZenBook model. To be honest it is a bit rare for most laptop vendors to offer updated video drivers (and ironically you often can use the video chip manufacturer's drivers either). I'd also suggest downloading and running the installer for DirectX 9.0c linked in my post above. It MAY provide some missing DLLs that could be used by CM1 games. Also, I suggest running the games by right-clicking and selecting 'Run as administrator' from the popup menu. I don't know if setting a 'compatibility mode' setting of 'Windows XP Service Pack 3 or 2' would also help. This would be accessible by right-clicking on the CM launching icon and selecting 'Properties' from the popup menu. Go to the 'Compatibility' tab and in here you will find settings for 'compatibility mode', 'privilege level' and others. You may want to experiment with the setting of 'Disable display scaling on high DPI settings'. What version of CMBB are you trying to play ? Is it 1.03 or 1.04 (the 'vista patch') ? If it is 1.03, is this a eLicense version or a disc-protected version (pre-2006 purchase) ?
