  1. In my humble opinion, this talk about nuclear or other non-conventional weapons is material for the briefing text boxes and should not stand in the way of a good tactical clash of Cold War units in CM. "Red Storm Rising" is a bestseller and did not have to resort to nukes, if I recall correctly. Here is an idea to keep it limited: Let them fight over Austria. Nobody would use nukes in a fight over neutral territory, would they? Thomm
  2. I guess that was the point I was trying to make, as I found some vehicles (in particular earlier APC models), which are not included in CM:SF2, in CM:A. Best regards, Thomm
  3. As for the Soviets: Combat Mission: Afghanistan seems to cover exactly the right period of time equipment-wise. So the research must have been done already. It even has some NATO small arms (M16A1, FN FAL, G3)! Best regards, Thomm
  4. So I did a stupid little research on the most interesting NATO Cold War vehicles, their production and service years: M60: 1960-1962 M60A1: 1962-1980 M60A2: 1969-1975 ... 1981 M60A3: 1978-1983 ... 1997 (phased out by US Army) M1 Abrams: 1981 M1A1 Abrams: 1985 M2 Bradley IFV: 1981 ... M113: 1961 ... M163 Vulcan: 1968 ... 1994 M551 Sheridan: 1966 ... 1996 Leopard: 1965-1970 Leopard A1: 1975-1977 Leopard A2: 1972-1973 Leopard A3: ....-1973 ... "End of the Cold War" Leopard A4: 1974-1976 ... 1989 Leopard 1A5: 1986-1992 ... 2003 Leopard 1A6: 1986-1987 ... Prototype only, . Leopard 2: 1979 ... Flakpanzer Gepard: 1973 ... 2012 Marder: 1971 ... It seems that the most interesting time period would be shortly after 1981, with the M1 Abrams, the M2 Bradley and the Leopard 2 becoming available. I guess this is common knowledge for wargamers, but I had to find it out for myself. Best regards, Thomm
  5. Indeed! I am still unsure: "Heart" or "Upvote"? What is the consensus? Best regards, Thomm
  6. The biggest "fault" of the demo is that they did not charge 10 $ for it. I got at least 6 hours of playing out of the "Beach Assault" scenario alone ... culminating in causing 100 US casualties as the Syrians. Best regards, Thomm
  7. At least during the setup phase of the "Beach Assault" scenario I saw trench sections vanish when placed in certain configurations. I think it was T shapes or right angles. They were still selectable by their symbol but the 3/D object became invisible. Best regards, Thomm
  8. Well, the demo is amazing! A big "Thank you!" to the team! Best regards, Thomm
  9. Are you kidding me! Now that I installed "7-Zip" for uncompressing the .rar file, I have to find out that the new demo comes as a .zip!?! Shocking! By the way, under Windows 10 the default "Save under" file name is the following one: CMSF2%20Windows%20v200%20DEMO.zip, which looks kind of weird. Best regards, Thomm PS: How can I switch off the auto-correction that keeps changing small into capital letters?
  10. No, it is not your computer. BFC used a file format which stock Windows (10) cannot open. Not the best choice, in my opion. Best regards, Thomm
  11. I have downloaded the Windows installer .rar file to a fairly new system with Windows 10. The OS does not recognize .rar files. Do I actually have to install a utility program for being able to install the demo? Best regards Thomm
  12. Very exciting news! Please note that the information on the www.battlefront.com main page regarding release dates and demo release is now outdated! Best regards, Thomm
  13. There even is a relevant documentation upcoming! Best regards, Thomm
  14. See also Panzerfaust Page by M. Hofbauer from the beginnings of the internet. Best regards, Thomm
  15. Please be advised that every post containing the words "Fulda Gap" gets upvoted by me. Best regards, Thomm
  16. Very impressive video! Thank you for it! The flames still need some work, I think. Best regards, Thomm
  17. Yeah, yeah! Let me remind you: That poem though. Pure art! Best regards, Thomm
  18. Can't wait to try out the M163 Vulcan and the Flakpanzer Gepard! Best regards Thomm
  19. Just imagine having to wait like this for "CM: Fulda Gap"! Best regards, Thomm
  20. We have a 27 inch 4K monitor here at the office. I have never seen it plugged in (which, I guess, is not a good sign), but I have heard people talking about it. Apparently, the display quality is great when vector graphics (like CAD drawings) are displayed. However, many applications do not allow for a proper scaling of the GUI elements, resulting in very small letters and hard-to-hit buttons. Based on this very limited evidence, I recommend buying a 32 inch 4K monitor. When I did my own research some time ago, I copied the following snippet: "27" is where going up to 1440p delivers, and to really get the most out of 4k a 32" or larger is needed." ... which supports this recommendation. Best regards, Thomm
  21. After trying for two days, including direct email contact with Dell support, we were still not able to place an order there. We then ordered the PC from a local retailer (Mediamarkt) at 1335 € (which still seems to be reasonable). Here is a another reference system offered by the German magazine PC Games Hardware and Alternate: Intel Core i5-8400 Geforce GTX 1060 (6 GB) Asus-Mainboard Prime B360-Plus 250-GB-SSD (Crucial, MX500 series) 1.000-GB-HDD (Seagate) 16 GB DDR4-2666 ... for € 1.249,- Best regards Thomm
  22. Thank you for the encouragement! I do not even know what I will do with all that horsepower, since I am upgrading from an old laptop that effectively prevented me from playing games (the exception being small/medium CM battles), which was probably a good thing. Now that I think of it, I think what I am looking for the most is a quick start-up time. Ridiculous, I know, but the laptop required ten minutes to boot in the end, and I do not want to experience this again! Other than that, I will probably buy "Arma 3". Not to mention future CM games, of course. Update: I now learned that I can get licenses for the numerical software I am using over the internet. This means that the system will, indeed, be used for serious work, and suddenly the extra power is justified. Side note: At the moment we are stuck in the ordering process because the Dell website does not accept any of our credit cards. And the 10 % discount period ends today. It is like a carrot dangling on a stick: "Look what a nice system we have for you! But we won't let you order it, you fool! Muahhh!!!!" Best regards, Thomm
  23. A hardware thread like this one should be stuck to the first page in my opinion. I just did a few hours of research for buying a new PC. What I came up was this: Dell XPS Tower Intel Core i7-8700 CPU 16 GB, DDR4, 2.666 MHz M.2 PCIe-x4 SSD, 256 GB Hard Disk 2 TB (7.200 1/min) NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 (6 GB DDR5) ... for 1236 € (10% reduced offer) Actually, I admit that this is overkill for my needs. Personally, I would have ordered the smaller XPS tower: Intel i5-8400 Processor 8 GB, DDR4, 2.666 MHz SATA-HD, 3,5, 1 TB (7.200 1/min) NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050Ti (4 GB GDDR5) ... for 809,10 € (10% reduced offer) (... but then it turned out that the PC will be bought for me, anyway.) I shall be more than happy to report how CM runs on it. Best regards, Thomm
