  1. The argument was that once soviet forces deployed in Afghanistan (took them a few days if not hours) they almost never used trucks to transport troops as they had plenty of BTR's. Trucks were used to transport supplies. Hence you will see that any mission involving truck gives you a task to escort and protect them, not use them in any kind of combat support role.
  2. Guys, when you use artillery and air support remember that if when you call for it and select Emergency the support will arrive sooner but there is a lot higher chance that it won't land on target and can cause friendly fire. I've been beta-testing CM:A for a year and I don't remember ever getting Friendly Fire (aside from occasional rocket).
  3. They are actually all included as part of the game, no need to download them separately
  4. Guys, a little surprise for you all is that in addition to 2 full campaigns and 10 standalone missions the game also has 4 more standalone missions made by our well-known testers. It's a nice bonus, especially considering that one of these missions called "Operation Storm 333" faithfully depicts the real Operation Strom 333 that took place in 1979 where soviet KGB Spetznaz stormed presidential palace and eliminated Hafizullah Amin. The mission takes place exactly on December 27, 1979 at exactly 7:15pm and lasts exactly the time the real operation took to complete. Needless to say the terrain and palace have been recreated in great detail and force skills and type are what it was 30 years ago. More on it here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Storm-333
  5. That movie is indeed good. What's more the events of that movie are well documented so hopefully someone will make a mission once CM:A is released.
  6. Here are all the videos from the original video author Michael Kuslin http://www.youtube.com/user/kuslin2#p/a
  7. Since I happen to read a lot more details about real "Operation Storm 333" (because so much of it is in Russian language only) I can say that Normal Dude did an outstanding job recreating that mission to the last detail. The terrain, the Palace, the weather, the troops and the balance - it's all too real!
  8. Facebook is the place to be! You can even meet hot Russian spies there
  9. In real life most insurgents and certainly regular armies carry a lot more anti-tank RPG rounds than anti-personnel. The reason is that it is much more important to be able to disable enemy vehicle when one appears and also because HEAT RPG rounds can still be very lethal against infantry.
  10. Dave, can you upload the test missions you used for your tests, this will help try to recreate the results you saw. Thanks!
  11. Actually quite a large proportion of solders serving in Afghanistan during that was were from Central Asian parts of USSR and their primary language was not russian. Still they spoke and understood russian very well. Overall russian army during the whole of USSR had only russian language spoken, certainly when it came to official communications with CO's. Even in Ukraine, Latvia or Uzbekistan.
  12. As much as China is growing really fast now, there latest tanks are still crap even compared to T-90. On a tactical level NATO vs China would be like NATO vs Syria all over again.
  13. Ah, OK, I figured it out. In nVidia display config I set the primary monitor to be the second monitor whereas the configuration is still Laptop+Monitor.
  14. OK, so I run CMSF on a laptop. I recently bought a 22" monitor and I hooked it up to the laptop. The monitor is a secondary display, meaning I have my taskbar on the laptop screen. But I want to run CMSF on my second monitor. I've been trying to configure it but every time it still goes to the primary display (laptop) Is it even doable, what I am attempting?
  15. A small update. Russian media resource DTF.RU interviewed all the parties involved in making CM:Afghanistan. The interview is in russian however Google translate does an OK job. It's an interesting reading. http://translate.google.com/translate?prev=hp&hl=en&js=y&u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.dtf.ru%2Farticles%2Fread.php%3Fid%3D57288&sl=ru&tl=en&history_state0=
  16. I just googled him. Wow, I didn't know he is an MD in Pediatrics! Cool! http://www.healthgrades.com/directory_search/physician/profiles/dr-md-reports/Dr-Charles-Moylan-MD-7479FAEC.cfm
  17. Yes, the reality indeed can be different. But in the game the human player (I hope!) will not keep his solders within the vehicle in an ambush. AI, that's a different matter but then whoever plays ambush against AI is a "cheater"
  18. Modern russian operating procedures (as is US, I am sure) when caught in roadside ambush is either: a) Speed up and try to escape (unlikely as enemy will try to block the road) Dismount immediately and fight on foot. These were standard procedures in Afghanistan and Chechnya. Staying inside an APC in an ambush is a suicide. One RPG hit and vehicle becomes a graveyard.
  19. Alex, this thing is, what practical value would it bring over good old RPG-7? We don't know if Syria has it or not and in reality would solders want to carry a disposable one-shot Shmel when they could instead get RPG-7 with thermobaric warhead and some anti-tank warheads? Sure, it is a cool thing, but really, it's like LAW or AT4. One shot and it's over.
  20. BMP-3 armor is almost the same as BMP-1/2. SPG-9 will have no problem going throug it.
  21. If this was me and I really liked the game I would sincerely thank Paradox for introducing me into the wonderful world of CMSF (because not many other publishers are interested in this subject) and from that point I'd just buy the game from BFC and get the patches in time. Yes, I'd loose some $30 but still it's better than not knowing about this game. But, that's just me, I am a tactical wargame nut
  22. Mozart passed away, so did Beethoven but their music still lives on and millions of people listen to it every day. Why should CMSF be any different?
  23. If you could email me the savegame at ""dimastep at gmail dot com"" that would be great!
