Task organizing units during setup

Recommended Posts

It does not seem possible to task organize a platoon during the setup phase. In CM 1 it was easy to assign a MG team and an AT team to a specific platoon and have them benefit from the leadership modifiers. Just placing them next to the Plt Co and he showed them in command. In CMBN that does not seem possible, but should be. It happens all the time in RL. Weapons plt teams are always attached out to infantry platoons for specific missions. The admin box in the U/I would be the place to make this happen I would think.

It is a bit frustrating picking a Bn in a QB and having specialist teams showing only the Bn Cmdr in their chain of command. Not realistic at all. In the Marine Corps we attach an Engineer Plt to an infantry Bn and the Bn CO will assign the engineers to a company for specific missions. The Company Commander will attach them to a platoon if their skills are required for that infantry platoons mission. The engineers or specialist teams then take orders directly from the infantry commander and should benefit from his leadership rating. Is this something that can be implemented in CMBN? This game is exceptional by the way, a great effort.

I think there is a way to assign separately purchased teams to particular units during the QB purchase phase. Or am I remembering this wrong?

Yes, you can, and that's the only way around this restriction. You can delete the units from the Bn OOB and then repurchase them individually, assigning them to whatever command you wish. The downsides to this is that it costs more points to buy units individually, and you can't change your mind after you enter the unit setup.

Interesting, how do I assign them during the purchase phase?

On the right screen which includes your "purchased" units, you can mouse click on the unit you want it assigned to and you'll see a little yellow or gold arrow (as I recall) in front of the unit it is to be assigned to. Then, select the unit you want to purchase and its assigned to that higher unit.

To be clear: you can only attach units purchased from the "specialist teams" or "single vehicles" menus. You cannot attach a formation to another formation.

Yeah, and I don't think you can attach any of these to anything lower than a platoon HQ unit. You'll have to check the game for that.

Units can be reorganized on the fly and have the Leadership and C2 benefits just like in CMx1. That is a new feature added to CM:BN. What doesn't happen is the C2 links don't change in the UI. Which means there is no visual confirmation that an on-the-fly reassignment has happened. And this is definitely something we need to fix. Unfortunately, it's an example of a great idea that came up very late in development and there was no time to futz with the UI, but there was time to implement the gameplay aspect. Better to have the gameplay aspect and imperfect UI than it is to wait for until we have time for the UI.

Can you clarify what this means in practical game terms a bit?

For example, if I take an MMG team and a 60mm mortar from the Coy Heavy Weapons Platoon, and position them with one of the Rifle Platoons, distant from their own Platoon HQ, does the game C2 modeling automatically take this into account, and consider these support teams to be under temporary command of the Rifle Platoon HQ?

If so, that's very cool....

Steve, you mean on the fly while in game? How does that work...just being in proximity to an HQ or somefink?

Steve is referring to the feature that allows, for example, a company HQ to provide C2 benefits to a squad from one of its subordinate platoons when the squad is in proximity to the company HQ, even if the squad is out of comms with their own platoon HQ. However, this would not help you place a mortar from the weapons platoon with a rifle platoon as it only works for superior HQs in the unit's direct chain of command.

OK, so as far as the game C2 modeling is concerned, I can make an ad hoc overwatch group with a BAR team or two borrowed from the Rifle platoons, an MMG from the HW Plt., and a 60mm mortar team, and then put my Coy HQ nearby to command the whole lot.

But a Rifle Platoon HQ couldn't command this entire group - it could command the BAR teams if they were from the HQ's own platoon, but there is no way for the Rifle Plt. HQ to be the immediate superior commander for the MMG team or the mortar team.

Yes?

Yes, not unless they are purchased as "specialist teams" in the editor/QB force picker and attached directly to the rifle platoon HQ.
