What constitutes a junior?

Recommended Posts

Having a mildly serious/ quasi important discussion on the use of 'junior'. A relative claims only the first born can be a 'junior'. I disagree and think that any child, regardless (or irregardless, for the grammatically challenged) of order in the birthing line up, can be a 'junior', if so named (first, middle and last name matching those of the father).

Agree or disagree?

I will google now for the internets version of the truth.

My imperfect understanding is that the general rules are:

a) males,

B) same used name as the father,* and

c) father is still alive

The form doesn't get used here though.

* eg, the father is William Theodore Smith, know as Bill. The son is Harold William Smith, known as Bill. Father therefore becomes Bill Senior, while the son in Bill Junior. If there is a another son, named Thadeus Colin William Smith, who also goes by the name Bill, then the whole family just goes by the name FREAK!
