John Kettler
Moon, Help!!! I just got through welcoming some new arrivals to CMBO and was horrified to discover that the links to the Invitational Tourney and ROW I so painstakingly dug up and posted are no longer working and simply go straight to the useless for my purposes main Forum list. I wanted the new arrivals to be able to read for themselves just how exciting the game can be, but I'm undone by an absolutely maddening series of glitches. What gives, please, for these used to work just fine? Regards, John Kettler
hoolaman
That is a good question, is there ANY way to get links from the old forum to point to a location on this forum? Plenty of old and not so old threads heave links to other threads, like some of the "useful posts" threads. Also the search function is not very useful on this software (few BB searches are though). JK, the reason is the forum migration. URLs for the forum as a whole and for individual threads are not remotely the same now.
Moon
hoolaman is right: JK, the reason is the forum migration. URLs for the forum as a whole and for individual threads are not remotely the same now. All the links are pointing to the old forum. That old forum does not exist anymore. Hence the links don't work. There is a long and complicated procedure to have old links redirect to the imported threads, but we decided to skip it because: a) it's not even guaranteed to work the forum migration had already taken a week during which the forum was down completely c) it's a long and complicated procedure Martin
Joachim
1.) Use "advanced search", search for posts instead of topics and enter an author. 2.) Search the archives only 3.) ROW does not work as a search phrase - it is too short. "Invitational" brings up lots of results
John Kettler
Moon, Apparently, I got so excited I failed to provide the page with the links! Am referring to my 07/08/2006 post here, in which I painstakingly provide links for all the Invitational and ROW stuff I could find from the early days. http://www.battlefront.com/community/showthread.php?t=48247&highlight=invitational&page=3 Regards, John Kettler
John Kettler
Moon and hoolaman, Got it. Too bad all those hours of digging and thread reconstruction will now have to be done again! Given this, it would be a huge help, Moon, if you gave us back a three character search capability, since many acronyms are three letters long, ROW, LOS, HMG, etc. Joachim, I appreciate the suggestions, but I really miss the ease of use in the old Search mode. Wicky
Use the google site search demo > http://www.google.co.uk/sitesearch/ bung in > http://www.battlefront.com/community/ Query away I thought you were a google search expert?
John Kettler
Wicky, While it's evidently important to you to start the new year with a zing aimed at me, I do appreciate this useful suggestion. Regards, John Kettler
Redwolf
The thread numbers are the same. Just pick the thread number out of the old url and exchange it for a number in the current forum. Let me know if that's difficult. BTW, the forwarder can be set up without disturbing normal forums operations. With apache mod_rewrite it's a matter of a single line of configuration.
hoolaman
Hi Redwolf, I tried a few combinations of that and it IS too difficult. Care to provide a bit of a "how to"?
Redwolf
Well why (the hell) don't you post one of the broken links so that I can have a look?
hoolaman
From the mists of the World Before ROW we have remnants of the all but mythical Invitational Tourney thread, the action in progress reports for which begin around page 6. Since I seem to keep stumbling across piece of it, I'll keep inserting the newly found links. With luck, they'll even be in sequence. Newcomers to this list shouldn't let the nomenclature of the threads bother them. We found ourselves suddenly in danger of server collapse, causing all sorts of panicked workarounds and weird titles to ensue. While chasing something else down, I found more (thought to be lost) wonderful segments from the extensive threads of the Invitational Tourney. The notorious Jarmo quote "Rockets! Moon
I may be wrong, but I don't think that the thread numbrs from UBB have been preserved when importing them to vB. Which is why a simple mod_rewrite isn't going to work. However, I haven't actually tried it, so I may well be wrong. I do seem to recall that during the import the instructions from vB indicated that there is no simple solution to it, which is why we haven't done it.
Redwolf
Yeah looks like the thread numbers were shaken up. Bummer. It isn't on web.archive.org either. I'll have to do some google scraping to connect the old and new thingies. Might take a while, very busy.
