Friend or Foe?

Recommended Posts

After playing Gdog's interesting JTAC style mission and losing most of my men to friendly fire despite designating areas of attack were I had no friendly forces, two questions have come up.

Does CMSF use any sort of IFF system, and also why do aircraft do bombing and straffing outside their designated target areas (including way off map)despite having HQ units observing the target zone?

I know there are alot of variables to consider in accurate air ops but the accuracy seemed a bit wild to me anyway.

I should add that some spotting was done at squad level so probably not the best units to use, but shouldn't an IFF system be in place?

Anyone?

A question a fair few grunts have been asking in real life. If you are using someone non specialist and requesting immediate air/arty support then there is a good chance it will not drop where you wanted it to.

A 5 minute delay will near guarantee that it will drop where it is supposed to. In 1.03 you can now adjust arty/air support, which helps a lot. Especially if you ask for a slow rate of fire, which will limit the damage done by shells dropped short.

I think friendly fire from aircraft is accuratly modelled.

"Does CMSF use any sort of IFF system, and also why do aircraft do bombing and straffing outside their designated target areas (including way off map)despite having HQ units observing the target zone?"

Human Error

Pilots and JTAC still make mistakes

In testing this game I was pleasantly surprised ato see how easy it was to have an air strike take out our own men and vehicles.

These errors are modeled realistically in the game IMHO, the game would far to sanitary and the air strikes FAR too precise if every time you called one in you could know with %100 certianty that it would magically only target the bad guys.

The current system in v1.03 may show some improvement for you and works perfectly fine for me.

Air/Artillery support friendly fire is not the only problem with AI friendly fire.

In dawn/dusk environment my forces divided into two attack groups (distance some 600m) happened to shoot each other. One time I saw US squad firing AT-4 at stryker moving some 15m away. Stryker was lucky because the rocket hit the wall between target and attacker.

However friendly fire does no harm (except At-4 I guess) and no suppression in CMSF but I think if devs ARE going to provide ff effects (kills, suppression) they should think what makes my men fire each other right now.

I think it would be wise first to understand why they shoot friendlies and only then provide ff effect in further patches.

It's worth noting that for indirect fire the observer being within 600 meters of the target is considered danger close.
