von Lucke
I seem to be having a spot of trouble in discerning the subtle difference between the Australian and New Zealand unit location icons. No offense to any Aussies or Kiwis out there, but yr flags do bare a marked similarity. So, I came up with this: (Hey, everybody likes kangaroos, right?) And, while I was at it, I did something similar for the Canadians: Now, if I can just convince myself that a kiwi would look good in the middle of a blue/white/red target... EDIT: Oops, forgot to mention interested parties can find them at CMMODS.
Sergei
You could try this for the NZ... Oh, and to gain a few grog points, easy pointers for telling the difference are that the stars are white in Oz flag while red in Nz flag, and the Kiwi flag wouldn't have that seven pointed star that symbolises the Aussie states & territories. Of course, all this is academic as there is no real difference between the peoples. Originally they were part of the same antipodean empire, but eventually the continental shift separated them... ****, that made me lose the grog points! [ January 06, 2004, 07:29 AM: Message edited by: Sergei ]

Michael Dorosh
Another option for Commonwealth spotted markers would be the red/white/red or white/red/white vertical bars painted on AFVs. I'm not sure it's a big deal distinguishing the various CW troops apart when you are shooting at them, is it?

Kanonier Reichmann
Yes, I imagine we are probably the only country in the world that actively hunts its national symbols as represented on its crest. i.e. the Kangaroo and Emu. I think it says something about our personality. Can you imagine that occuring with the bald eagle? Regards Jim R.

Speedy
Of course not lions are a protected species, they would go to jail for shooting them. Nothing wrong with shooting unicorns though.

(Mmmmmm, I always have time for kiwi fruit!) I thought the seven-pointed star on the Aussie flag referred to their inglorious past as transportees --- you know, it kinda looks like the badge on a bobbies helmet. And I thought the red stars on the Kiwi banner referred to their socialist political leanings. You mean they don't?

Nevertheless, they are poached for their tail feathers from time to time. Michael

By coinkydink, I came across copies of those two in a 2nd-hand bookshop here today. NZ$95 (about AUS$2.50) for the pair, which I thought was very reasonable. The equivalent NZ volumes tend to go for around NZ$100 a throw. Didn't get them though - maybe next pay ... Oh, I've started using that map you sent me. Combined with some photos and sketches, I think it will come up ok Send me a CMAK set up (a pre-made scen pref) if you're looking for a game. Kozure
My former roommate, an extensive world traveller, told me the easiest way to tell Kiwis from Aussies is to trick them into saying the word "ten" somehow. According to him, Kiwis tend to say it one way and Aussies tend to say it another. Unfortunately, I can't remember which way was which. I'll let the representatives from their countries figure that one out. Something like "tyin" for one group and "tahn" for the other. All hearsay, of course. Having lifted glasses with Australians, New Zealanders and my fellow Canadians alike, I can say that we share in common a fondness for better tasting beer. Canadians also trapped their national animal extensively, for use in beaver fur top hats. At least we didn't actually eat them, though. Beaver tail doughnuts don't count. On a serious note, there should be distinct differences in colour between Commonwealth battle dress and United Kingdom BD. The difference between UK and Canadian BD is certainly very noticeable. I'll let the uniforms grogs chime in on the subtle differences between Australian, New Zealand, South African and Canadian BD.

A much more noticeable and easy to pick up on test is to simply ask a New Zealander to say the number that precedes 7 and comes after 5. If the guy says "six" then he's an Aussie and if he says "sex" then he's a Kiwi. Regards Jim R.
