Zitadelle
This link was just presented on the Missing-Lynx Discussion Group (www.missing-lynx.com), and I thought that others would find it of interest. Here is the link to purchase an e-book download of a 1943 Russian Manual on how to destroy the Ferdinand. The link has a few sample pages: 1943 Manual How to Destroy a Ferdinand

Kanonier Reichmann
Yeah, I can imagine all those hits on a Ferdinand impacting at the same time would probably knock it out. Is that what they're getting at? Regards Jim R.

Chipaev
IT says what caliber round you need at those points to do damage to a ferdinand e.g. you need a 45mm round to kill the Ferdinand's gun when hitting it (at least 45mm)

Such a nice red color would look great on an Elefant and make the crew really mad. Gruß Joachim

Chipaev
Well Joachim, since you're so bright, why don't you tell us what the Big Red and Big White one at the bottom mean? Or can't you read Russian such as moi? [ April 17, 2004, 01:55 PM: Message edited by: KG_Chipaev ]
Kanonier Reichmann
I have no idea KG Chipaev but if you could let us know that would great. Regards Jim R.
Amedeo
The large white shell means "AP and HE from guns of all calibres" while the red one means "HE from guns of all calibres". That is consistent from what one expects: to immobilize the Ferdinand hitting the tracks, almost anything goes, but to shoot on the frontal armour, you can only use HE hoping for internal spalling. So, technically so this diagram states, "comrades! We can take out the fascist Ferdinand when the magic AT gun rounds bombard it from all sides at the same time!"

Chipaev
Basically what Amadeo said, they have to tell the Red ARmy something, so they basically bend a few statements to make them ALMOST true.

Well, it's the basis of propaganda. Probably had a better impact on troop morale than distributing a leaflet that states, "meet this fascist tank and you're pretty much toast. Run away, comrade!".

Chipaev
I guess if you hit the thing in the track, it is pretty much an avoidable danger since the gun only points one way, but if supported by Medium tanks on both sides it's gonna be hard to take that monster out without a 250 kg bomb right on top.

If I ever had to face up to a Ferdinand armed only with an ATR I reckon I'd probably adopt my best "Brave Sir Robin" impersonation and bugger off quick smart!
