test please - kazaa & winmx

Recommended Posts

bugger...

It may take a while to register on the network, my machine will be online for another 5 hours so hopefully in that time.....if someone could try every 30mins or so and let use know if successful

[edit - also try looking for a file by name, eg "gravestone-pud" , it may give a different result. I have gone through and added in CMBB to the search parameter of each mod in kazaa.]

Did you remember to add "Simpsons" or some key pornographic terms to the search parameters? That's the normal protocol for getting files to proliferate over the network. ;)

Really a good idea, I will try that as well when I get home from work.

Do you think any of the modders (apart from MrNoobie, who definitely warmed to that idea.. smile.gif ) would mind having their mods shared? I don't wanna step on someone's toes...

Will let you know, if something shows up

regards,

Tinhead

P2P could be a good solution for mod sharing, but not Kazaa. I know eDonkey has been successfully used, as you can set up a dedicated server and then "whitelist" files, meaning that only files on a list show up in searches. I.e., in this case you only search within CMBB mods, and all the porn and simpsons episodes will be filtered out.

Have a look here for a group that has done this very successfully. They are sharing something like 200 TV episodes @ 700 MB each, with NO server costs.

Also, in our hypothetical CM mod server, due to the whitelist, there is no risk of being accused of assisting in copyright violations, since the server would filter out any content except CM mods.

Hmmm...this really would be a good system. Another advantage of eDonkey is that each file is given a unique hash, which can be put in a hypertext link such that clicking the link in explorer automatically puts the file in your eDonkey download queue. I.e., you can post a message to the forum saying "here's my mod: link" and all someone has to do to download it is click the link.

Obviously this has some disadvantages, like having to wait to find sources before you can download the latest, but it's also no-cost. Instead of hosting files, a mod database just has to have the hashes to the files.

Well, I'm at work so I can't blather on any longer. Check out that link and see what that group did if things are not clear...

I havent found your files either. Tried it at work (about 6 hours ago) and now again from home.

Ive been using Kazaa Lite, shouldnt matter.

The idea of using eDonkey sounds good to me. It hasnt been very fast for me (compared to Kazaa, DirectConnect) but has been quite stable. Mayble somebody who knows more about it could comment?

Thats a bummer, its been up for nearly 10 hours now. I will keep doing it anyway just incase theres some sort of central index that needs to be rebuilt every 24 hours or something. My Kazaa will be ofline for the next 12 hours but I will start it again tonight (Perth, WA, -8 GMT)

Edonkey - i tried using this for personal searches but could never find a single user available, ever! Im certainly willing to give it another try though.

[edit +8 GMT DOH!]

Try the eMule client (uses the same network). It works wonderfully with minimal configuration. Your problem before was probably an out of date server list. Get eMule here. Then check out the MST3K server (you'll have to dig around in that first site to find the current IP), and you can see how the white list works.

When Gunslinger first released his real colour mod a few of us tried to share it on Kazaa but it didnt work .... gotta be worth another try though.

Tonight i'll share all my CM mods on Kazaa and Winmx and leave them up for a month or so ....

IF ANY MOD AUTHORS DONT WANT THEIR MODS SHARING THIS WAY PLEASE LET ME KNOW AND I'LL ENSURE YOURS ARE NOT AMONGST THOSE SHARED !

I'll add [CMBB] to the front of the filename so it may help if trying to search on CMBB.

Over this weekend i'll remove all other shared files from Kazaa so if anybody does find them they can download without having to Q.

If it works can somebody let me know ....then I can keep them on !

I have no opinion on this, and am not about to start any retarded fights, but I will point out that while your heart is definitely in the right place - you had the courtesy to ask, and courtesy is always appreciated - the onus is on you, the distributor, to get permission from authors before distributing them. It is a bit unrealistic, I am sure you will agree, to expect them to read every thread on the board and spot your message...

In any event, many of the mod authors have a disclaimer allowing further distribution of their work in the readmes that often accompany them. This may add a new dimension to this, but I am sure many of them would not care either - but it may be something for you to consider.

kazaa might be a good way to do the really big mods, like complete interface mods (lots of Megs there); might be something for me to consider if I ever finish my ASL Interface conversion.

I've come to realize we should have labled it as a Simpsons episode.

It sounded like ePackAnimalofYourChoice may not rely on proliferation as much...

Thanks Lou2000.

I think the more people give it a go, we may see something. remember to edit the file in kazaa and add in to the keyword, cmbb.

The trouble with usenet, edonkey and others is that you act as a server for a file, the speed of that files transfers depends on your connection, period. With winmx and kazaa you file is added to others to "compile" into a single download and hence the download for the user is substantially faster. I will install winmx and have a go with that as well.

[edit - ok winmx up, my winmx username is pud818.]

OK lets see if we can get this working......

I as currently sharing a few mods on WinMx and Kazaa ( I prefer winmx).

To test this I am using Mr Newbies excellent CMMOS mods ... Why ? Well simply because CMMOS mods contain a readme with the words "This pack may be freely posted for downloading" and partly becuase Mr Newbie has already taken part in this thread ..... Oh yeah and his mods are excellent :D

I have edited the details in Kazaa to include 'cmbb' and added 'cmbb_' to the file names to try assist in searches

(Nr N - If you have any problems with this please let me know and I'll remove them instantly !)

The problems we had last time I tried this were that nobody could find the files in a search ... To try overcome this in WinMX I am currently hosting a 'Combat Mission Mod Room' in the chat section ... Just enter, browse my files and join the Q for download ..... Oh yeah and you can chat if you want ;) I may not always be at the PC but I'll leave the room open.

If this works I'll get the rest of the CMMOS mods into the shared area and contact a few other mod/scenario authors regarding their views on this method of sharing .......

If any are reading this please feel free to contact me by email (profile) and let me know if you are happy or not ... The mods will not be changed other that adding 'cmbb' to the file name to aid searches--- and will contain all original readme's etc ... nor will they be re-packaged into mod/map packs.

OK people lets get sharing those mods

OK I just did a search on Kazaa ... and have

found 'defaultuser@kazaa' sharing the CMBB patch.

The file has 'CMBB' added to the file name ... the one im sharing is in lower case 'cmbb'

I did the search on everything not just software.

So who else out there is sharing the patch ?

If you change yr kazaa user name it will help to know who im d/l'ing from/
