Jagdpanther schurzen?

Recommended Posts

I'm really interested in the Jadpanther that has had a wyvern painted on it. To my old eyes that looks like a slightly different design to one used by 43rd (Wessex) during the war, which became the official insignia in 1935. Perhaps an old sweat made a stencil himself or found an old one knocking about at some stage.

@Lucky_Strike Thanks for posting these. A fascinating series of photos.

You're welcome. I do like the PanzerWreck books, consistently coming up with very interesting and new material. One source I always return to when looking for answers to these types of questions.

As for the Wyvern ... it'd be interesting to know if the Wessexers (???) opposed the 654. We can't see any sign of the Wyvern in the earlier shots of 314 in the lane 'cos of the foliage which seems to have been positioned in just the right place ...

What's also interesting, and not mentioned in the captions, is the strange 'paint-job' on the front of 314. I can't decide what it is, it looks like a very hard edged stripe, I'm pretty sure it's not a scorch. In the earlier images it's a lot less pronounced, so it could be an artefact of image enhancement techniques used by the publishers.

While I don't really like to see wrecked examples of (surprisingly) one of my favourite tanks, those photos are excellent and the comments (whether accurate or not) are interesting.

I hadn't seen the 'bullet splash guard' before, how have I missed this?

I was also interested to see two sizes of muzzle brake.  I recall discussing this with @Sgt.Squarehead (who sadly has not been along here for a while 😬) after he'd kindly sent me (at his expense) a replacement 88mm gun barrel.  Thankfully only at 1/72nd scale 😆, it fitted through the letter-box, along with the spare T34/85 he'd included as Christmas was coming up. What a nice guy.  Anyway, mine had been battle-damaged in an encounter with a cat of another sort, my Burmese, whose teeth had won the day.  I noticed that the replacement seemed different and we concluded that it was proably just down to different tooling at the model companies.  Maybe not it seems.

So @Lucky_Strike - if you've reached this far and not fallen asleep, thanks for posting.  I'll chip in to the legal fund when the copyright police come knocking.

I'm pretty certain the guys at PanzerWrecks do pretty thorough research. They've a good track record.

The splash guard was a field adaptation seemingly, good material for a mod🤪.

That's interesting that the different size muzzle brakes have been reproduced in different model kits. It's probably down to the makers using different examples as the basis for their measurements. When I was down at Bovington a few years back there were teams of Chinese guys sticking little coloured dots all over some of the exhibits so that they could do laser measurements, presumably for mould making for models. Did occur to me to go and get a whole load of colourful sticky dots so that I could crawl all over the displays 'n'all ...

"Rear area" doesn't give us much to go on, so it is hard to say. The Wyverns led off Bluecoat in the XXX Corps sector. I don't how thinly 654 was spread during that battle and whether or not they came up against them as well as 15th Scottish and their Guards support. It might just be that it was towed into their rear area after the fighting had moved on.

We might find the answer here:

Wyvern at War: The Story of the 43rd (Wessex Division) from June 1944 to V.E. Day

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1914155/?ref_=tt_ov_inf

It doesn't seem to be available now though.  Perhaps you watched it on release, as you're 'of a certain age'?

Just a thought, 'kill marking' could be a 'recovery marking'.  Particularly as the suggestion is that it was upside down at some point (unusual, perhaps due to bombs or naval weapons as there are photos of overturned Tigers said to be from this, or from traversing terrain, or during shifting out of the way, who knows).

May be, hope so, although I didn't get to it.  The suggestion on IMDb was that it's a series with multiple episodes.  I may just have missed a link to fire it up.

A quick look on Youtube, which I'd neglected to do, suggests some videos which are at least partly based on the series ad its black and white footage.

EDIT: I started watching one which is the said item.  In three parts.

Sounds close enough. Could be a Wyvern Steptoe picked it up.

Good find, though I don't need more distractions!

First part of the three

Quite often they bulldozed these things off the side of the road just to get the roads open quickly, rolled over on it's side then possibly. It's a bit odd though 'cos where it's been knocked out in the lane both sides of the road have fairly step banks, so really no way to move it other than by towing. Hand brake off and pull it into a field. But then its been rolled on its side, and somehow ends back on a section of track ... as you say, who knows.

If that was indeed the sorry state of affairs, I imagine the track 'broke' as it hit terra firma.  It's perhaps a break in an odd place (i.e above the wheels) , but then track links and pins aren't designed for such frivolous bouncing around.

I'm currently cutting out a stencil, and will head to Bovington in the morning to try it out.  If you're at a loose end you could meet me there with a packet of coloured dots.  I'll be the one being escorted from the premises.

Come to think of it, they did say that 314 was shot up quite bad - a 6 pounder shot jammed the left drive sprocket and a PIAT took out the right - those'd probably weaken the tracks. The left track is clearly damaged in the photos.

Just off to order me dots now - do you think ten packs of these would cover 131?

Yes, they look adequate in number, not sure about emissivity?

Anyhoo, as expected they weren't so keen on my Banksy on the front of the Jagdpanther and I was escorted to the car park.  I assume you arrived later.  We could try again tomorrow though, weekend staff might be less attentive?

Let's meet up at 0730 to finesse our plan of attack.
