how do campaigns work

Recommended Posts

the campaign author designates certain units as core units.

These units are basically the ones you keep seeing.

Other support , non-core can be used but the program

does not track casualties on these non-core units.

also for the core units the author sets a percentage chance for refit(replacements), repair vehicles, resupply and rest.

page 16 of the manual.

ok so what are usually core units?

Generally, the only way to tell (if it's a series of large scenarios with various units dropping in and out, like Courage and Fortitude or Panzers Marsch) is to pay attention to the briefing, and even then you'll only get a broad idea. But when units you've used before start popping up missing chunks you know got blown out of 'em, they're your core units.

...infantry losses are usually mostly due to arty as the ai seems to spot them no matter what they are doing and where they are...

Rest assured that AI LOS is precisely the same as yours. If you're losing troops to spotted arty, there are a few tactics that can help mitigate the losses, mostly "run away when you see the spotting rounds" and "put them all on hide/Slow if they can't get away, and keep the suckers crawling out of the epicentre if they're not Pinned". If you're not seeing spotting rounds, then perhaps you're sitting on a TRP, at which point, GTF out of Dodge, rapid. But half the art of the game is moving your troops into positions where they (or their designated representatives) can see while not being seen. Keep your troops in defilade until you have something useful to do, and the AI won't be able to spot them.

...is it possible in a campaign to loose all your infantry? or all your tanks?

Eminently possible. Most of the time, though, you'll receive replacements between scenarios. A clear briefing will usually tell you when you're in a situation where you can't expect reinforcements/replacements/resupply.

Oh, you can cripple yourself good if you aren't careful. One campaign, second battle, I ran smack into a reverse slope defense that pretty much eviscerated a platoon. I've been limping along with that gaggle of 2 and 3 man squads for a while. No replacements for that platoon either, so they are pretty much useless, except as scouts.

"Wander out there and see if anyone shots at you."
