How smart is the AI

Recommended Posts

Will the AI on attack utilize the same info that the human directed troops utilize? Namely, scouting information such as location of a gun or tank or troop concentration. Does it pass info on the com net? Does an AI tank have to wait till it spots a unit before it is aware of it. In the first instance the AI would benefit from scouting in the second instance it wouldn't. Any body have any info on this? Cant seem to find any thing in the manual. Hopefully I have been clear enough on my question.

Under the TacAI programming, both your own and computer-controlled units will fire upon the primary threat within range, and will pop smoke and attempt to break LOS once fired upon by major threats. They'll also give buddy aid to casualties in their location. That's about it really for "reactive" activity. If not under threat units without orders just sit there.

All other actions are based on Orders either issued by you or the clock-driven scenario designer AI program

The short answer is "Not very."

We have been assured that the AI uses the same spotting model as the player, according to "Difficulty level", so there must be some use made by the TacAI of such spotting information, or why would it be coded in to the AI side at all? But the general plans and goals of the AI are pre set by the designer in the AI plan, so if there's only one obvious shortest route to their next plan position, they'll roll through there regardless of what other units, or the dead bodies and smoking vehicles tell them about the wisdom of that choice.

For your first question, no, the AI won't react to you in any strategic manner. Like, if you setup an AT gun at the end of a road, the AI will happily send every vehicle it has down that road, with no regard for the danger. It only knows The Plan, and will stick to it no matter what.

As far as spotting info, I believe that works pretty much the same as it does for you, the difference being that the AI won't really do anything constructive with the information.

Smarter than the average bear!!! Hey Boo Boo?!

As everyone else has noted, depends on what AI you are talking about. Individual units have their own survival TAC AI, but the fact that one unit has spotted your unit is completely irrelevant to any other unit that has not done so. They will follow their own AI plans the designers has programmed until they specifically have a reason to not want to, like being dead.

Orders are orders. :P

That depends. When you're programming the AI you want to try, at least a litle bit, to get inside the enemy commander/players head. What is his reaction going to be to this, or that, or the other. If you just mass the AIs forces and mash them forward, then ... meh. That's a pretty dumb scenario to play.

The enemy player doesn't know what the AIs plan is. If you recce, and feint, even though the AI plan can't take into account anything they find out while doing that, you can encourage the enemy player to out-think himself, reposition his forces, and be left off balance when the main attack comes in.

Hey, does anyone know what the drill is for the ai, when using mg's on the attack. I never seem to see them deploying.

HMGs will deploy automatically, but they have to be sitting in one spot for a while. In other words it will need to either be their last move, or you will have to give them an Exit After time and have them sit for a while. If they are advancing continuously they will not deploy their weapons.

Good point. You can use the less valuable forces to help with a feint.
