  1. Forced to listen to my friends brag about their relationships all day, and finally, when I think the blood is coming back to my cheeks... you spring this on me. I want in. Maybe not now, but I know when I see something I like. Hopefully in a few years when I have truly settled down, I can get something going like this with one of my own friends or even someone online... which leads me to a few questions ------- I know this sounds naive, but this board game/ combat mission hybrid is done online right? Furthermore, I've never been able to figure out how this sort of thing works. Do you need a third party to design and handle the abstractions of the game? I like the idea of someone able to manage the FOW and troop movements. But it also seems a little in depth... not to mention... welll (Its sort of, based upon what I know of the game, like a D&D Dungeon Master, right? Please tell me I wouldn't have to start fearing the sun and hiding from the opposite sex in order to play with a decent set of rules.) The previous sentence may sound like a complete slap in the face to most of you, but I mean to say: I am a single otherwise normal 25 year old with an addiction to war gaming, with a borderline-useless history degree. In other words... I have to at least spend some of my free time attempting to procreate, and I definitely have to spend a majority of my time earning pay to at least be able to come home to this game in any shape or form. With limited time constraints in mind: Just how in depth would setting up one of these games be? I have a friend in mind who might want to play... but if I need to find another person I might as well donate my 'creator' to science because I wouldn't be using it anymore.
  2. Sergei, you're taking this thread way out of control. If you don't like what Sublime is posting, ("go read a ****ing encyclopedia instead of prodding this board for primary sources and anecdotes") don't read this thread. Which segues into my next point... With a name like Sergei, I'm going to assume your blood is of eastern descent. I wouldn't be proud of people insinuating that my family comes from "ignorant" stock either, but I don't get up in arms every time someone calls the Irish a bunch of drunks with fertilizer bombs and firebombs. What Sublime said however, whether you perceive it to be a thinly veiled snub or otherwise, was simply not meant to insult the common Russian soldier of World War 2. So apparently, whatever Sublime has said to you, (you're clearly annoyed with him already, hence the google/wikipedia comment) has made you angry and you want to run his name through the mud. What "discussion" are we even having, when you state that Sublime shouldn't be asking "dumb" (yes my words, not yours) questions at all? 1. I think thats literally what Sublime is trying to do. 2. In the absence of primary sources, which you think aren't necessary on a board like this, I'm pretty sure - , the sentence that literally precedes the selection you quoted, is his best attempt. You can learn a lot more from speaking with a veteran than you ever can browsing Civilian encyclopedias. You can learn a ton from this Discussion Board alone! I don't mean to be creating enemies here, but really Sergei, what you are doing is so obvious its embarrassing. Go post in another thread, this one apparently is way too personal for you. Everything Sublime has posted has been in the spirit of personal enlightenment. ---------- Personally, I think the Russian high command did not think very highly of their soldiers. Personally, I don't think the American high command (or the british for that matter) had much faith in the combat readiness of their early 40s forces in Afrika. Hence the need for over whelming odds and simplified tactics/ hardware... hmm, deja veux anyone?
  3. In otherwords, let Battlefront work on the coding and perceived errors while modders take what will become the vanilla game and modify it to seperate theatres? The missions themselves are essentially small scale versions of this method. The company makes the components required to play the battle, and the game master adjusts the parameters. (sorry to sound like a broken record,) just like close combat. I think I've just convinced myself this game should be moddable, at least insomuch as CC was. It is, after all, just an evolution of the board game. Battlefront has essentially created the rules and the playing pieces and we can pick the theater. ---------- Short of a great argument against this, IMverrrrryHO I believe this could be the future. (I am sure we are all aware of the perceived financial incentives, at least initially, so I guess their mention would only be redundant at this point)
  4. Am I even in the same universe of this thread when I ask the following question: Is this guy just asking for something other than the ability to modify not just the textures but some of the base code? Furthermore, was the modding allowed with Close Combat what did it in? (Although in my case it actually worked out because I bought each title almost twice over due solely to the re-playability the mods brought.)
  5. Unless Battlefront wants to do things your way, I would expect them to treat various snow tiles (heavy, slush, solid ground) as they do in the summer (soft, marsh, dirt). Don't mean that as a jab but I did not realize so many people are indifferent about it. I understand this could be a way's away but to be honest I actually expected a larger time frame covered by the game, ie: autumn and winter models. (The name Normandy can be so abused nowadays I didn't know it was only 3 months, only Americans when I first purchased; this is my first Bf game)
  6. Yeah from New Hampshire. Snow is the way to go. Its actually warmer out with cloud cover during a snow storm than even a relatively sunny day with wind chill. I hope snow is modeled appropriately
  7. Saving Private Ryan... all of those men were in secure defensive positions... that poor bastard whos just along for the ride can be our "abstract messengers" (was not aware they were modeled... in any capactity, awesome!). They all fought along side each other, but as individual positions were over ran, they began to act as ______________ ... IE our Combat Mission soldiers. Vaguely aware of each other, but only linked by "messengers" or repositioning.
  8. Came here from CC as well. Unable to play a Combat Mission until they were able to model each soldier individually. Played the demo, relealized it wasn't all just arbitrary abstractions, and began to play. That being said, has anyone sent a WP round into a Tiger and achieved these effects (in game)? Its what the old timers all seems to agree would take down a biggun. (EDIT: apparently)
  9. http://youtu.be/gGpiDpP5xTU its my first attempt at a video, but with all the work with saturation and that jazz... i figured i'd show what i had as far as old timey effects  It is taken from Valley of the Shadow, so if you're currently engaged in this battle yourself, or plan to be, do not watch this video... even though it may seem hard to see whats going on from the allied side
  10. I hope this is an appropriate place for this... I can't seem to figure out how to see which units are in C&C while playing WEGO in the command phase on IRON difficulty. The default view seems to be highlighting other units that are in the group. I would like to see highlighted all units within direct communication. (or C&C). In the game phase, I can click on the units and see what they see (flashing icons with question marks for both friends and foes). I would like to temporarily see what they can see, hear what they can hear, etc... I thought there was a button combination for this, but I can't remember nor find it in the manual.pdf.. any help would be appreciated. ---------- AND SHOUT OUT TO ARISTOTLE- I can't believe the stuff you create! Amazing!
  11. I have such a hard time believing that it can't be done. I purchased this game after seeing all the beautiful and obviously time consuming videos people made on youtube. I thought it was a matter of hittting rewind and play. And not really complaining.. but how come my save game files for WEGO PBEM keep increasing in data size? Would it really add that much more [memory, etc.] to be able to link to my other saved games? I have alll minutes back to 0:00 [of a recent pbem game], but to go through all of that would take forever [loading screens, etc.]. Has someone made a program for this?? Has this been addressed on another thread? I really think this should be fixed with the Common Wealth Module... but the sheer fact that they are charging $35 dollars for the expansion tells me probably not. Would really like to hear a BF member's take on this! It drives me nuts to not be able to pull up some game mode where i can assemble and watch all of the turns (or replays) : D
  12. I have been completely unable to find H2hh anywhere. It took a full frustrating night for me to finally give up on looking for it. Direct link anyone?
  13. Oh BTW, I only found out about Combat Mission from the CLOSE COMBAT forum. I only found out about Close Combat from some crappy Microsoft Disk I got... that might be besides the point, or maybe they should focus on getting the demo out more!!! I suppose the demo in all three cases, Combat Mission, Close Combat, and Panzer Achtung Star Operation, all influenced my decision to buy. Spread the message with the demo http://www.battlefront.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=blogcategory&id=277&Itemid=477 hyperlink. I can't exactly remember how to do it.
  14. Hey, good idea JetSet. Until I saw your reference to the Achtung Panzer game, I wasn't really comfortable with what I thought might be spamming. You are exactly right. We should try and plug CM. I don't know about BF as a whole, but thats just my personal view. (I am not that familiar with them, and I don't feel like discussing my views on the entire company.) A little free association here: I saw the Achtung Panzer thread on this forum. I downloaded the APOS demo around christmas, and have just returned from having played it for a couple weeks. I intend on purchasing it. I like its (seemingly) frequent upgrades. If more people buy it, there will undoubtedly be more games and their patches available to download. That being said; I read (I believe later on in the thread) that someone said it only wet their palate for more CMBN. I completely agree, however there are many more things I want for Combat Mission. (Damage physics, more modding access -units -tile sets -theatres -years covered, etc.) This, not to sound too redundant here, is impossible without financial support. Again, this is not possible without exposure. So in the most long-winded and self satisfying way possible, I have to say I (super redundant) AGREE!! Lets get the word out!
  15. And they're all on vacation, no one expects a thing!
  16. Oh I wonder what people will be saying in another five years: These wide open Eastern Front Battles are really X and Y. We should go and do something like A or B.
  17. Buy the game. Its better than anything else out there. Which isn't raising the bar, but no less true.
  18. Hedgerows are able to be crawled through, carefully. However, I agree with Womble on this one. During combat, I can't imagine a soldier breaking out his entrenching tools (trench spade?) and begin to hack through a hedgerow. Maybe when they are setting up defensive positions, or at the tail end of an assault. But these are times when other routes can be found; as a platoon leader, I wouldn't count on reinforcements arriving at the next hedgrerow if they first had to exhaust themselves creating a gap in their present line of bocage. Having spent a couple years in the conservation corps, I've learned that even with axe-mattocks, loppers, and chainsaws there is still brush that is just too dense to create a path through (I did trail crew and fire line). Although I didn't cut trail through the bocage country of northern france, I can definitely appreciate the difficulty of humping 30-45 lbs of tools up or across broken terrain; and then be set to work. I couldn't imagine doing all that, and then being expected to fight in combat. -------- I guess what I'm trying to say is, I could imagine infantry men considering certain hedgerows "impassable" (without the help of explosives or a small animal hole) and therefore opting for a different route.
