It certainly has been a success in terms of showing the line in terms of tactics and what squads can do by themselves.  Great learning experience so far, after I win or fail v.1, I will be looking forward to the next iteration.

It's very tough. I mean VERY tough. I was stunned at the number of blue icons present on the map after the rage quit. I got down to level one and the Ukrainian regulars seemed to be flipping the bird to my troops. As in Toleran's experience one of my T72 crews abandoned their perfectly intact ride after what appeared to be merely MG fire. The survivors were promptly gunned down after crawling around looking for... a place to die. I felt compelled to LIKE Toleran's posts.

Also, if you want this battle to appeal to MP'ers I suggest your provide setup zones for Red.

    You're a meanie.

Thanks, I was tired and cranky last night and maybe a bit more blunt than was appropriate.  You can see from my current rating here (due to my meltdown on CMBS launch day) that I do that sometimes, much to my chagrin later

I also think perhaps you are right about difficulty level.  I always play Iron out of principle, but the first time I did Warrior, and maybe I am drastically overestimating my own skillset vs. the difficulty.  My stubborn pride won't let me not do Iron, and I think this is probably one of those scenarios I need to get right to learn and grow.  Thank you again for doing this, and I look forward to other scenarios from you, they for sure are not overly easy

I'm having better luck this time taking your advice, and also not trying to fight the whole map at once -- I think that was a big part of my problem, diluting my attack.  I will let you know if I do better by the end of it.

My bad. I forgot the pre-awards DVD mailings. Agusto's obviously an Academy member.

I would watch this, very good series IMO and it gives a different POV of which I found useful to stimulate thinking on what would you do if you lived in a society that headed the way Germany headed.

We are all humans and act pretty much along same lines, it is just a question of luck (birth) in which society you end up that then forms your frames of reference...

    Definately worth a watch.

That's right. Paraphrasing Steve (I think) : Realistic, well conceived battles are one-sided, boring affairs. An 'interesting' battle results from errors in planning or reconnaissance. Or sheer desperation. No commander ever sought an interesting battle. The list of scenarios in every CM game constitutes more or less a compendium of mistakes.

I passed it on and he accepted. Just as well. 'Four' (as his friends call him) is said to be  an Olympics caliber swordsman and deadly with a pistol to boot. You wouldn't have had a chance. Provided he's sober.

    Sublime,

What a wonderful story! Bravo Zulu to those who made it possible! Unfortunately, they're now blushing to such effect that Rudolph is about to sue. Why? because their crimson glow outshines his famed nose. We do indeed have some great people here--from all over the world. The Forums have been tremendously effective in broadening not merely my gaming horizons but my overall ones, and I know this to be true for others as well. Sorry your vacation was really a strictly enforced staycation, but here's hoping you get your life sorted out. And now when you're stressed out, you can take it out on the pixeltruppen, whether the AI's, your opponent's or yours (by mistake or in a cowardice correcting rage). Regardless, c3k will be happy. And you'll feel better. As a result, you'll be better able to deal with the peculiar institutional joys of phasing back into so-called civilized society.  Happy nonrecidivism!

We already know anything about the map (with the exception of enemy units). We can fly where we want and take a look from any angle. So every information is already there for us as players to get. It is debatable how hard it should be to get that information.

Every now and then someone suggests that we get toggleable fields for LOS so you could see at a glance to which areas a unit has LOS and which not.. This has been rejected by BFC as making things too easy. I partly agree: for the higher difficulty levels it should stay as is but it would be a big help for beginners of this game.

Now contour lines are IMHO something different. First I would guess that commanders in WWII would have had such maps. Probably the first thing you do when you sketch out a plan: hills, valleys, rivers, settlements - the important stuff. All the nice details WE get like where bushes are or what kind of crop is growing on that specific field would be left out of such a map. A map with contour lines only is much easier to 'read' that the 3D representation we have.

This leads to the second point: what we see is a 2D representation of a 3D world. The real world observer would have a much better impression of distances and heights than what we can get from our 2D view. This is remedied somehow by our ability to fly around and look at things from several angles. Contour maps provide 3D information for a 2D map.

IMHO it wouldn't be necessary to get an overlay like in the example above. A simple 2D map would be more than enough.

Yes, it would be very cool and 'wet work' did occur most commonly on the Eastern front but also in other marquee battles like Arnhem. And, yes, one questions whether the additional animations are worth the effort given the coding complications. What CM needs, imo, is a better surrendering algorithm- which is also challenging to implement due to the situational nuances. The solution may not exist.

    You want something like this:

Quote: 'A right thumb in the eye is more dependable'

The number of casualties from hand-to-hand combat in WW2 were microscopic. A good idnicator: by 1944 German rifles were being produced without bayonet lugs.
