  1. This discussion is pointless IMO because : 1/ Yes it seems a tad overmodelled in CMBB, but BFC is not going to patch it anyway. 2/ The bog rate is pretty much spot on with CMAK. Tanks bog significantly less and when they do, they are less likely to be permanently immobilized.
  2. Great thread Jason. Personally I find the Leningrad front really interesting, particularly when the Germans go on the defensive after they complete the encirclement at Shlissel'burg and the Soviet counter attack at Tikhvin in Nov-Dec 1941. While it was never the main sector of the war, I think it is perfect to study the evolution of Soviet operations and the way they mature throughout the war. From the Liuban offensive in early 1942 which ends up with the destruction of the 2nd Shock Army in the swamps west of Miasnoi Bor and the fights around Siniavino in 1943 to the Leningrad-Novgorod offensive in Jan 1944, the front line stays pretty much the same. At first, it is kind of disheartening to watch all the successive offensives planned by the Stavka unfold and fail to break the blockade while suffering terrible casualties each time. The fights around Siniavino were so costly that it got the reputation of a graveyard for Red Army soldiers. But by 1944 things have improved tremendously for the Soviets. They have opened a corridor south of Lake Ladoga with Zhukov's operation Spark the previous year and the January 1944 offensive finally forced the Germans to withdraw to the Panther line. In 2 years they managed to overcome ammunition and fuel shortages, poor command and control and coordination of forces as well as a lack of (or poor use) of reserves for the exploitation phase of their offensives. The fact that Stalin gets less and less involved directly surely played a big role too.
  3. I was looking for the other Stuarts, models III, IV, V, and VI actually. MikeyD what do you mean? I already have your lend lease Stuarts for CMBB, they look great thanks. Do you mean I can use them for CMAK?
  4. The Hetzers are impressive Bump because this shouldnt be on page 2 so fast.
  5. I think it depends on what type of battle you are playing. For instance it is set pretty low for a probe and it should be higher for an assault but I dont have the exact numbers.
  6. Is anyone working on a Stuart mod? The Stuart is one of my fav tank in CMAK when I am playing with CW forces. The default paintjob is not bad but I think it deserves something better; the tracks in particular look too clean. *hint* *winks* Oh yes iam talking about the Italian theater I know there are mods for Stuarts in North Africa.
  7. John could you please explain the difference between armour and tanks in British doctrine. The book claims that although the cruiser armor was frequently penetrated by 20 mm AP which usually passed through both sides, sometimes without harming the crew; there was little or no "flaking", unlike the Italians in which the crews were nearly always killed by flake fragments when the tanks were hits. I wonder if this is modelled in CM and if the Italian tanks are more prone to flaking. Another thing that struck me is the fact that although the cruiser tank was designed as a fast, lightly armored tank for mobile warfare, in practice they never used full throttle and would rarely go faster than 12 mph. It was to avoid mechanical breakdown but also because Mk.II and MkIV cruisers were mixed in units.
  8. A quick search with Google returned the following info : It looks like you are missing VB runtime files and need to update your windows. http://www.snapfiles.com/help/missingfiles.html
  9. Spread out even if it is a rear area!! Forgot where I read this but IIRC there were 3 sets of distances to be used for panzers 50m, 100 and 150 m between each tank.
  10. Thanks for the input. I forgot to mention it but that bit of tactics was about cruiser tanks. Yes I have read a little on the official history of New Zealand and I have to say it is very interesting and pretty well written. http://www.nzetc.org/corpora/WH2.html
  11. It is obvious the Soviets got badly mauled in 1941, they were pretty much clueless and the Stavka launched many attacks that were doomed from the start, but they still had a few successful counterattacks. For instance in july 41 at Sol'tsy (Zoltsy) near the lake Il'men south of Leningrad, the Soviets launched a powerful attack from the north into the flank of the 8th Panzer Division while another group attacked the german lines of communication from the south. The bulk of 8th Panzer Division were cut off from the division's rear echelons and HQ. Manstein wonders if he has not taken too great a risk by advancing so fast. The Germans are almost trapped and have to fight 4 days to break the encirclement and regroup to the west. They lost in the process 70 of their 150 tanks. (Glantz - battle for Leningrad p44-46) The same thing happened at Tikhvin in november 41. I wonder if the Soviets really had the choice. Could they really manage a fighting withdrawal? And weren't their active defense and merciless counterattacks succesful in producing the required attrition to weaken the wehrmacht? Also the experience from these setbacks was surely useful later. The russians didn't magically become proficient with their operations in 1944. It took them some time to adapt but it seems that they had the right idea from the start. 12. BUMP for Magomar because I think he is still looking for batallion commanders.
  13. I feel like I am naked when playing without mortars in CM. I would say the 3-inch and universal carrier combo since it is more versatile and can go thru terrain the halftrack cant. But the ammo depth of the mortar halftrack is really tempting too. As for the MG, well your halftrack should be positioned behind a hill, a ridge or some woods, it is not supposed to be in sight of the enemy so you shouldnt need it. my 2 cents
  14. I stumbled across this interesting bit while reading about british tank tactics in North Africa : "In Tank vs Tank actions fire must be distributed to include all the enemy AFVs on ship-for-ship basis. Every tank will engage its opposite number in the enemy formation. That is to say, flank tanks will engage the enemy flank tanks and the center tanks engage those in the center of the enemy line... This ensures that fire is distributed along the whole length of the enemy line." Tank Combat in North Africa : The opening rounds Thomas Jentz Chapter 5 : Armored Force Tactics, p 69 Well in CMAK I will usually have several of my tanks concentrate their fire on a single enemy tank; it never occured to me that tanks used to spread their fire so much in real life. Also wasn't it the opposite for infantry tactics in the british army? From what I read british infantry was famous for its fire discipline and one of the roles of the officer was to direct the fire of its troops with the whole platoon firing at the same target. Why is it different for armor tactics? And what was the doctrine for other nations in WWII? Discuss.
  15. I suggest you read the following threads, this topic has already been discussed at great length. http://www.battlefront.com/discuss/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=23;t=006282#000000 http://www.battlefront.com/cgi-bin/bbs/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=23;t=004993
  16. Try Methode Champenoise; you can download it at the scenario depot.
  17. Yes that is how it used to work but the 1.02 patch has introduced new winter bmps for bunkers. So the new bmps are : winter concrete bunkers 10340.bmp 10341.bmp 10342.bmp winter wooden bunkers 10343.bmp 10344.bmp 10345.bmp edit : arg too slow
  18. Muhahaha that was pretty fast. Thanks mate.
  19. I need to know what are the new BMP numbers for winter bunkers (both wooden and concrete) with the last CMAK patch. I have Tanks-a-lot bunker pack installed but only the summer BMPs work in game.
  20. I am playing the Kursk-Panthers in the mud scenario and PSW 222 definitely shoot at planes. And the best defense against air attacks is to spread out especially your armor (keep a 50 m minimum distance between your tanks when you expect air attacks). Personally I think the threat of bombing from the air keeps players from using ahistorical tactics like excessive bunching up of tanks.
  21. Magomar, I am afraid the links are still borked. Both redirect me to a free hosting sign up page.
  22. Ok I have just downloaded the file, but it doesnt appear in my CMBB scenario list, and when I try to open it with the editor it says : file is meant for a different edition of combat mission. Anyone else? I have version 1.03 installed.
