ahh wasn't it mentioned here recently that the real sneaky Russian plan was to overwhelm UA resources with PoWs?

I'd like to suggest in the interests of perspective we stop referring to them as 3rd Army corp but instead as 3rd string.  It's a lot closer to the truth of the impact they will have.

You are defeatist, General Artkin.  We will not cede one meter of our sacred soil.  This will be reported to kremlin authorities.
Anyone else tear up watching the video Beleg posted, where the old ladies are crying w joy over the heroes who showed up at their door?

I'd say it's about bagging lots of RU men & gear.  RU already stretched very thin.  And there's always the collapse possible due to two massive RU pockets being smashed -- both political and military collapse possible.  As Steve always says it's about killing Russians.  I'd prefer they all surrendered (because I'm nice and need them for trading later) plus all that gear UKR gets.

I find it way too simplistic to say that. Everyone on the forum agrees that everything is always much more complicated than it seems. That's like saying that quality is better than quantity 😕. It depends on the relationship between the two and many other factors. "Quantity has a quality all its own"

Of course, the best thing is to have a lot of precise weapons with lots of information 😂

Trying to imagine how those suckers who got sent into the Kherson cauldron feel knowing that odds are right now Russian high command is totally focused on Izyum.  Sorry boys, you're on your own now.  Good luck.

Reports coming in from all over the globe that sunflowers are standing significantly taller and shining much brighter today.  Evidence from my yard verifies.  Wonder what this means?

And I am back for a couple of minutes.
    RU soldier reports at 21:16
UKR tactics are smart They avoid urban battles and just move on with their BTGrs Following groups surround RU troops left behind RU troops left behind have no heavy weapons so cannot do anything against UKR RU threw some troops to hold Shevchenko but UKR bypassed it through outskirts leaving some troops as blocking force  UKR are moving towad Kupyansk Serious UKR column of foreign AFVs/vehicles is moving toward Kupyansk (as of 20:00) RU troops mostly stopped resisting [at this direction]. They are abandoning positions that are not fortified and retreating

At this point they have probably been turned around for the third time as the Russian command panics. Given the units nonexistent experience and training I expect them to get so spread out, and have so many maintenance problems we might never notice as they are committed in penny packets to little or no effect.

They're basically bashing themselves back to the stone age - Russia already had problems retaining STEM types when it was just about better jobs abroad. For a while they had a budding security software industry that was born from the depth in math education you get when you have a lot of smart people to educate but don't have the resources for them to work with hardware.  That's sort of degenerated into troll farms, which do have some interesting technology and take some cleverness.  But when you can't afford to pay the trolls (and there does seem to have been a dropoff in outside trolling -not sure if it's because they're all focused on RU or not getting paid), even they'll go work outside the country.  And maybe even get straight jobs because the money is good.
You can see it in the equipment Russia is fielding - there really hasn't been much advancement since 1991, and they just don't have the engineering depth to develop new stuff, or the manufacturing depth to make it.  And probably won't have the resources to even build more copies of the old stuff when this is over - anything developed after 1991 is full of foreign parts that will be embargoed for a long time.  So it doesn't matter so much that they're burning through 20 years of skilled specialists with their military equipment - they're burning through 60 years of accumulated equipment that they'll mostly never be able to replace.
In reading random pages about the death of Gorbachev I think I came across something that discussed the politics that basically froze their technology in the early 70s - I'll have to see if I can find it again.
Meanwhile, as you point out, Ukrainians are getting trained on modern NATO stuff, and rapidly developing drone tech, among other things.  And they seem to have Uber-for-artillery down to an art form.  And spent 8 years developing NCOs and small unit independence.  And more.

Perhaps it’s because the U.S. is a country of immigrants (literally, everyone came here from somewhere else, even the “Native Americans” came from somewhere else with each wave conquering, assimilating, or exterminating the existing tribes), that in my view, we have far fewer of the “you don’t belong here, go back to your country” issues. Yes, there are the same diehard racists as any other country, just fewer.
Case in point; today, a Labor Day fundraising event was held in Boston, Massachusetts (a city infamous for “No Irish need apply signs” posted on businesses during the 19th century) to raise money to help Ukrainian refugees resettle here. It was a joint event sponsored by the Communities of Ukrainian Immigrants AND Russian Immigrants, so as far as I’m concerned, all of the “The only good Russian is a dead Russian, kick them all out” in this thread is nothing more than Racist BS, and throughly disgusts me! Yes, the US has it’s own issues with the same garbage in the political circles, but at least we recognize it for the racism that it is, and try to deal with it.

I didn't see it this way at all. He says, "What are we doing here? They are our brothers; it gets hard to shoot." I mean, how much more can he say with current political climate?

Reason Russia is eventually going to lose it. They ignore completely the civilians once they invade. What we say in Australia a good fence makes a good neighbour. The Soviets had one it was called the Iron Curtain the problem was it run through Germany.

About a week ago, there was video of Excalibur rounds hitting soft skin vehicles and a dugout.  Those are clearly airburst rounds... the signature explosion is unmistakable.
Edit:  I was an artillery officer for 17 years and a forward observer for most of that time.  Airburst rounds go off at a optimal 7 meters for variable time (VT) fuzes.  Depending with distance and angle of view, that is low enough that an airburst can be mistaken for a normal point detonation fuze burst.  So chances are good that airburst fuzes are being more commonly used...but we are not clearly seeing it in videos...because the 7 metre height and seeing if from a drone video (mainly overhead angle) from hundreds of metres distance makes the airburst look like a ground graze burst.

I will leave these tweets here and note it is in Russia's interest to lay full claim to the Russian language and ethnicity.
Here is a article where Russians in Latvia are shifting to support Ukraine.

    Ok...STOP.
I am not a moderator on this forum but I have @BFCElvis on speed dial.  This thread is about the war Ukraine and, yes we have discussed surrounding issues and possible 2nd and 3rd order effects this war could have on the region.  This thread is not about:
    - Bafflingly narrow or simply out of date concepts such as solving human cultural overlaps with policy.
    - Vilifying the entirely of all Russian peoples as somehow less than human.  No human society, culture or whatever has or ever will be entirely homogeneous, good or bad.  So sweeping ideas of how to solve a "Russian Problem" by a bunch of old guys with too much time on their hands, which they should spend learning more, are not 1) viable or 2) useful here.
    - I get we are sore on Russia right now, they earned that one; however, at what point on this incredibly myopic line of thinking do we become worse than that we assign to them?  All in the name of "safety" - a whole lot of atrocity and historic marks of shame lay on the feet of "safety".  I have been to one genocide and trust me none of you know what you are talking about, so stop hijacking the thread.
    - FFS, we did not even take the approaches some are proposing here during the Cold War, we went with "contain and attract/entice", and we won that one.  In fact we look back on the occasion of the McCarthy era - which is where this is going- as a dark chapter
You wanna talk about mass deportations, forced migration, race/ethnic cleansing/purity or any other whack-job nonsense there is literally an entire internet out there, let's try and keep this one small "sane space".

I am also struggling to understand it. However, watching it unfolding among RU Nats posts I noticed that:
They en mass switched to it memory-holing Kherson info The stream of info from Kherson quickly dried up It was like watching magician show. Female assistant flashed fake boobs. Audience attention focused on her, and the magician quietly pulled Kherson cart completely out of the scene.
So, my working theory is that they decided to info seal Kherson completely. But they need to distract RU public from discovering it (it is admitting defeat at Kherson right away) they decided to generate fake glorious victory. Just rushed the first idea they got using IAEA visit as kind of spice to make it more thrilling.

I suspect that it is RU prop incompetence fault. They put so much effort into portraying US as dying weakling that they walked right into propaganda dead end. I mean you cannot start telling people US is the super villain Rambo right after you told them US is dying weakling.
So, for new season they decided to use somebody else. A gentleman super villain who unlike US Rambo relies more on cunning schemes than on brutal force.
