  1. You don't play PBEM continuously. You play a couple of turns per day, typically you have a few games going at once. If this makes you ask "so how long does it take to finish a PBEM game from starting it?" you are thinking about it wrong Enjoy the journey GaJ
  2. "Refer to the CMSF Strategy and Tactics forum"?! You've got to be joking, right? If the CMSF S&T forum contains the right information for how to conduct warfare in WWII, BFC have completely screwed the game. Plus, if I wanted to read about modern warfare and look at pictures of it, I'd have bought CMSF. But I don't. GaJ
  3. Post it at CMMODs (as well) ... it's there right away GaJ
  4. Bil_H posted a new mod at the CM Mods Warehouse Period Based Floating Icons, by Bil_H Description: These floating icons are based on the map symbols used by the US Army during this time period. GaJ
  5. OK, so I've done a first step of desuckification Now when you click on CMBN in the left bar, you get to a list of CMBN mods by submission date, instead of the sucky by-author table that was there before. I'll do more in due course (like figure out what's wrong with the search). GaJ
  6. I discovered I was wrong about not having LOS into the area where these icons are appearing. It's clearly going to take some time to get used to what I can and can't see. Also a useful lesson: if you're getting contact icons, then you can see there .... worth chasing up who can see it However the disappearing and appearing icons is real... I'll send you the file. GaJ
  7. Why on earth? You just click on the commander line in the GUI to get to the guy who's commanding... I miss all sorts of CMx1 features, but not that one... GaJ
  8. Same thing happened to me... I didn't even know there _was_ low bocage
  9. I've read that all the astral movements (stars, moon etc) are correct. GaJ
  10. I was pretty impressed when my commander got nailed by a sniper while operating the MG ... he fell into the tank, and was instantly replaced by another crew member on the MG. Now that's balls!
  11. I should be able to dig out which one it was, yes ... what would I do with it?
  12. That's a sound contact: it makes sense. I'm talking about contacts from what are clearly (hopefully, given their number!!) infantry contacts, miles from where hearing or sight seems possible... GaJ
  13. You can of course post here in this forum. However, there are clubs of gamers where you'll have a much better chance of an audience guaranteed to want a game and more likely to finish it. It's a sad fact that the drop rate for games "with a stranger off the street" is high. Each club has it's own emphasis and feel. Some major variables are the range of games played and the competitiveness of the place (how much of a "ladder club" is it"). Off the top of my head, I know about: We Band Of Brothers This is the one I like, where I hang out mostly. It is "BFC WWII Combat Mission Only" in terms of games played, and in the middle of the range of "competitiveness". Players are ranked, but it's not a "ladder club" with a fierce battle for who's at the top. It has a very strong emphasis on completing games that are started. If you drop games, you're out ... so you know that generally when you get an opponent at WeBoB your game is going to complete (there are _always_ exceptions no matter what, of course :S ) They regularly run tournies (friendly) and have a "challenges" forum for opponent finding. The only slight downside is that the signup process for this group is a bit involved. This is to make sure that members really will finish their games. The Scenario Depot This is "the" place on the web for CMx1 scenarios, and it also has a friendly opponent finder function. Totally not a competitive place. The Few Good Men I know less about this group. There are some well known CMx1 figures who hang out here. They have a forum and a ladder. They play at least all the BFC games, and a few others. Appui Feu A French online wargaming club - one of the biggies on the internet. There are English speakers there too World At War I don't know much about this one. HTH. Maybe others will add more. If you like PBEM, it's definitely worth checking some of these out. How about a sticky, save us from posting this daily GaJ
  14. LOL how many times will we have this thread? I as well as the three above, I gave some more pointers in this thread. I should make a new one adding the three above eh? GaJ
  15. So ... sure some missions have intelligence indication. Up till now I'd assumed that this was information that you get at the start of the battle, and we have covered this in a past thread. It's represented by the kind of transparent contact icons that you see at the beginning. Are you saying that I'm getting ongoing intelligence report telling me what my opponent is doing? Because this is what I'm talking about: solid contact icons moving around in areas that as far as I can tell I can't see. And is someone saying that the fact that I am aware of this intelligence only when my camera is flying at certain elevations is just a "percieved bug"? I'm not aware of ever asserting that anything is a bug that has subsequently been shown not to be. Maybe I have done that. I _try_ to be careful to just ask questions about behaviour, rather than assert "bug", except when it blatantly is a bug (as would appear to be the case in this instance). Note that one possible explanation is that the contact icon mod that I'm using is somehow broken. Maybe some time I'll get around to uninstalling the mod and see if the behaviour persists. GaJ
  16. oo - update: At TSD, Gary just posted: British Tommy commented: ... too right. For how many years now has Gary been supporting the CMx1 community with his massive site!? If you want TSD to support CMBN, go sign up, press "donate", and say "hi" in the forum. GaJ
  17. 1) Gary has said he's not in a position to do any more work on The Scenario Depot 2) I can see that to really be worthwhile, a site would need to be a depot (a place where you store scenarios) not just a review site. I can tell this because it seems to be what you guys were assuming I was proposing. FWIW, this is the sort of review site that I can "template out" for whatever sort of product. It's a review site about stuff that is stored elsewhere. I guess we'll just have to search the forums for reviews of CD scenarios... GaJ
  18. Where do you go, here, to find a review of Carbide Carbide?
  19. I have the same problem with Win7. When I grab the screen of CMBN, I just get black. I've also noted that Win7 doesn't seem to know what's on the CMBN screen when it tries to display the summary contents (like when you mouse over the icon in the taskbar). GaJ
  20. Is there any interest in a scenario review site? I can moderately easily post a site where we can post reviews, have the average review score posted etc. This would _not_ be a site that stores scenarios. Rather, it would be one that has pointers to scenarios are reviews for them. It would also be able to post the reviews back here as they are written, if BFC or I can find a way to re-enable this (at the moment it's blocked by a BFC security policy, it will likely take some head-scratching to solve this). The risk is that I put the site up but no-one can be arsed writing reviews there Personally, I'd like such a place, if it were populated, so I could go check out what others think about the scenarios on the disk, or posted elsewhere, before playing them. Thoughts? GaJ
  21. (extra characters: I'm impressed that our troops seem to fire panzershreks standing up. Those things, in the photo, look _heavy_!)
