  1. I was using a spotter. I don't understand why a designer would put such an important piece of equipment up against a wall that blocks fire. But I have learned my lesson. Gerry
  2. Hello: I thought the problem was defenders getting killed because they fired out from the windows? So a stronger wall wouldn't help? Or can bullets penetrate stone masonry? I am not an expert here but I have read comments about the sturdy walls of the Normandy buildings. Surely a bullet couldn't go through those? Thanks, Gerry
  3. Hello: I left my Mortar in the default setup position; in a FH next to the back wall of a house. I have a TRP and when I try to get it to hit that area it says no LOF. Does that mean the mortar is too snug to the house and cannot fire over it? Feck it, that would be annoying. Thanks, Gerry
  4. Remember seeing a history channel show about the house-to-house fighting in Stalingrad where Russians had used shovels on their German visitors. Urban fighting would lend itself more to shovels/knives/bayonets? Gerry
  5. Hello: Just reading this in Beevor about D-Day: "With the wire blown and smoke from the seagrass set on fire by naval shells, ...." "The smoke form the burning grass was so thick ..." What a coinkidink. Gerry
  6. I can understand 81mm hurting but I think 60mm are too destructive in the game for that caliber. For the people who have read a lot about Normandy, etc. did any books mention 60mms doing so much damage. It is no problem for them to take out a team. I have not seen a MG42 doing that in one minute. Gerry
  7. Someone explained this to me in terms of the Demo crossroads scenario. I thought I had controlled it but didn't get the points for it. But there were enough Germans with small-arms fire close enough that meant the crossroads wasn't really controlled (wasn't safe for the following units to move through). Maybe the calculation takes in the amount of fire (small-arms?) that the defenders can readily apply to the objective? And if it is at a certain level you still haven't cleared the objective. And maybe artillery and other long-range fire doesn't count here? Gerry
  8. Hello All: Probably has been done before but I am a bit behind as usual. Just finished my first PBEM and most casualties on both sides were due to 81 and 60mm mortars respectively. I must say it affected my enjoyment of the battle a bit. It seemed disproportionate given that there were many MGs on both sides and squads have a fair bit of fire power. They were used in direct fire so no spotting rounds to watch out for. And when they hit behind the hedgerows, you find you have lost control of your troops at the end of the WEGO minute. So they just sit there and take multiple rounds. I read that artillery did cause a lot casualties so it is probably a historic representation. Will non-bocage fighting be so affected by these beasts of death? Sorry for the rant. The game is fascinating and immersive. Gerry
  9. Just reading Operation Cobra by Zaloga and came across this: "Over the next several days, the fighting around Mortain shifted to small unit actions, with GIs and panzer grenadiers bitterly contesting hedges, ruined farms, and road junctions". Just like CMBN! Gerry
  10. Hello: Some detailed discussions already on this, e.g.: http://www.battlefront.com/community/showthread.php?t=95267&highlight=battle+bulge Gerry
  11. Hello: Trying to put all this together now. Is Womble correct below (other than he has switched Rattled and Shaken - here is the list as in the errata: "OK, Cautious, Nervous, Shaken, Rattled")? I mean with Suppressed and Pinned being separate? These are effects and the list is a spectrum of mental states (morale?). Thanks, Gerry
  12. Hello Moon: Thanks for your answer. I found the errata also now. Gerry
  13. I searched the manual pdf for Nervous again and it's not there. Gerry
  14. Hello All: Seen (-) and (+) numbers associated with some soldier states, for example Nervous and -1 Nervous. I assume these are different levels of the state with the (+) numbers meaning it is getting better and about to go to a better state? On a different note, Nervous is not in the manual. I now realize the manual is skimpy. I do realize the game is very complex (e.g. multiple waypoints with multiple orders stacked on each allows a lot of flexibility) so I am happy to have the forums to learn these things. Gerry
  15. What operations are covered under CMBN. For example, are battles from Operation Cobra included? Thanks, Gerry
  16. Hello: Just read my first Normandy book, "Normandy by Olivier Wieviorka". A lot about the politics before, logistics and strategies, psychological effects on soldiers and how they were treated, De Gaulle, and crimes committed by both sides. Not so much on the operations themselves but maybe OK as a first book to set the table. Anyone read it? Now need to look at the thread again to see what I should read next. Gerry
  17. Thanks very much for your help. My more question: I cannot see where it is marked known to neither. Gerry
  18. Yes, objectives are on. And I can see Frieda and Heidi. But cannot see the other occupy objective. Thanks, Gerry
  19. It's in the Pleasantly Shaded Woodland scenario. Thanks, Gerry
  20. Hello: I have an occupy objective FO but I cannot see such a map objective (it's also not on the tactical map). Is there a special meaning I am missing here. Thanks, Gerry
  21. Hello: On defense and I have a mixture of mines outside my setup zone. I thought stuff outside the setup zone could be moved anywhere? But I cannot move the mines. Also the mines are marked with red signs stuck into the ground. Is that there just as a reminder for me or can he see this too (say Amis were through a few days ago and marked it, they would still know where they were when they try to retake the area)? Thanks, Gerry
  22. Any chance playtesters could tell us some things they are working on?? Gerry
  23. Hello: You can also scroll the map by left-clicking and dragging. If you drag the mouse from the center of the map the map, it scrolls quickly. If you drag near the edge of the map, it scrolls slower. Gerry
