Combat Mission: TTP
General Jack Ripper replied to General Jack Ripper's topic in Combat Mission Battle for Normandy
Not yet, and I likely won't get into that anytime soon. That's a whole other can of worms. Just doing the Sherman Tank and it's variants would probably take a couple hours of video -

Well thank you for the wonderful encouragement! Full-Scale Battle will be coming up eventually. The plan is to go to Platoon, then Company, then Battalion-Level video features. I am also looking forward to the next installment, mostly looking forward to having a few days off of work so I can sit down and write. No, thank you very much for watching! -

Armchair General praises Final Blitzkrieg
General Jack Ripper replied to rocketman's topic in Combat Mission Final Blitzkrieg
It seems to me there are two camps of opinion on the game's graphics: There are those of us who remember the cardboard cutout graphics from the original Combat Mission, so even looking at the CMx2 game engine causes ocular relief and relaxation. Then there are the newer people who came in only after CMx2 was released, and who see the new game engine with all it's warts and flaws. Especially compared to games from large studios where they can afford to pay hundreds of people to do nothing but make 3D models for things. The graphics aren't perfect, but they're a damn sight better than one would normally get for a game like this, where the vast majority of comparable titles are still played on a tabletop with counters, or on a top-down 2D game engine with sprites. And yes, I am one of those people who simply turn the shadows off, and good riddance to them. I don't need shadow cascades to immerse myself in a game. -
I've got some free time this afternoon, I'll run a test and report back. EDIT: Well, that was easier than I thought. I took three BAR teams, ran them all to exhaustion, then had one hide, one kneel behind a wall, and one keep moving around. The hiding, and kneeling troops recovered their fatigue at the same rate, while the moving team recovered at approximately 1/4 the rate. Hiding/Kneeling: Recovered from 'Exhausted to Tiring' Moving: Recovered from 'Exhausted to Fatigued' So, if you absolutely have to keep moving, your troops will slowly recover their energy, but ordering them to stop and take a break will help them regain their wind much faster. Hiding seems to have nothing to do with it.

Combat Mission: TTP

This is an unlisted preview release. Please criticize, comment, or whatnot: If there is some glaring flaw with this, I will re-render it, otherwise any format corrections or suggestions will be incorporated into the next video. I WILL be replacing the old TTP videos with these new ones. I can no longer stand the awful, second-rate production quality of the old videos. I've also bought myself an actual microphone, so the quality of voice narration should improve in part two. -
Nowadays everything would be computer animated. They wouldn't bother using actual vehicles and film. After reading Armored Thunderbolt a few times, I think the biggest failure of the Sherman was the army not replacing it fast enough. Steven Zaloga makes a credible case for crew training and experience counting for far more than having the latest and greatest equipment, and he also documents the lack of urgency in new tank development until mid 1944. You're right too, in early 1942 when the Sherman came out, it really was one of the best tanks in the world.

Combat Mission: TTP

I know there are a few of you waiting patiently for this, so I thought I'd throw a bone: Work on the new series is ongoing. Recording gameplay for animation purposes is a bit more difficult than I thought. Working weekends remodeling a kitchen, and painting a house also tends to slow things down a bit. -
Is there ever any reason not use teams?
General Jack Ripper replied to markshot's topic in Combat Mission Battle for Normandy
Absolutely. However, if you break down your orders phase by Platoon, it helps to keep track of everything. I usually split a squad into teams, accomplish a specific objective, then merge the squad back together for any non-combat movement. -

Mechanized Infantry will be one of the topics covered in the new series. -

This playlist has everything, both the Armchair General vids, my own stuff, and a couple small vids from his1ojd. Playlist Link I'm working on a revised video series right now, hoping to make it a bit more user-friendly, and more professional. -
Creating Commandos?
General Jack Ripper replied to NPye's topic in Combat Mission Battle for Normandy
As far as I know, editing the 3D models is impossible. If you swapped in the .bmp's for the berets all you would get is some funny looking helmets. -

Holy thread necro, Batman! -
That Atlantic Fleet game looks really sweet, added to my wish list. To chime in on the topic: Silent Hunter 3&4 Blitzkrieg 1&2 Close Combat 2&3&5 Day of Defeat: Source Hearts of Iron 2: Complete War Thunder World of Warships I guess that's the short list. I've got a few CD-ROM's buried in my storage box.
