  1. You'd probably benefit some from a faster vid card with more vid RAM. Course if you're only running into this in large battles, that might not be enough reason to bother upgrading - depends on how much it bugs you. I just finished a CMBO battle called All or Nothing which is fairly large and has bunches and bunches of units running around in it at various points and it definitely slowed my system down to run it. I'm running a Dell 2ghz with a GF3 Ti200 64mb. I've got a gig of system RAM, so that is not a limiting factor. The P4 processor should be up to the task. Yet in this battle I had some stuttering. It wasn't bad enough that I really worried about it too much and it didn't affect game play enough to be of concern, but it was definitely there whereas in small and medium battles it wasn't. I'm pretty sure if I was running on a 16mb vid card the problem as I experienced in All or Nothing would of been worse, and perhaps to the level where it would of interefered with gameplay. 2. i've had good luck using newegg.com for vid cards they aren't the cheapest place to get them, but they are competitive and they provide good service and ship quickly as for cards, i've used quite a few different mfgs over the years and honestly most of them are going off nvidia specs and the performance difference is negligible if any one of them would come out and make a point of saying they are putting a superior fan on the gpu, one that is not going to wear out in say a year, i'd buy one in a minute - gainward comes closest on this score currently gainward has what they call gold samples - this means a couple good things - they put heat syncs on the vid memory and they put what to me looks to be a pretty decent heat sync/fan on the gpu - oh, and they select only best yield on the gpu and it comes overlocked with a warranty (which shows how confident they are in the product because usually overclocking is the 1st thing that voids your warranty - these guys not only cover it, they send it to you overclocked and with software for tweaking it) finally, i've been using a Ti200 for a couple months from these guys - and the software that comes with is good stuff - i actually use the overclocking software to underclock my card so that CM doesn't overwhelm it in big battles due to heat - works well) check out gold sample MX440's and Ti200's for yourself at: http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduct.asp?submit=manufactory&catalog=48&manufactory=1387&DEPA=1&sortby=14&order=1
  3. Yep, just finished All or Nothing against the AI. I realize there's not much discussion here about CMBO any more, but hey, I'm still playing it since I just got the bundle about a month ago. Decided to play all of CMBO before moving to CMBB. Anyway, don't know if anyone recalls this one, but it was the brits vs the germans in snow. Lots of armor running around, had to stay on the roads due to the conditions. Actually rather fun large battle with a few interesting surprises. Probably only works against the AI if they take the Germans, and if PBEM it would be a tough one for the human with the Germans. So, anyone rememember this particular battle? Anyone in scenario talk still playing CMBO? I'd like to think someone here is still talking about it...i hope.
  4. Is it possible to take a game you started PBEM and go live with it mid-stream? I'm thinking every once and awhile it'd be nice if I managed to hook up with an opponent that I've started a PBEM with to just finished it out live. You know, you've gotten past the set up and moving forces into position, they've just started to engage en masse and now rather than waiting a day or two per turn to see what happens you fire up the e-mail and tell whomever the opponent is to go live and play it out immediately. Just occurs to me sometimes that this would be handy. And the reverse too of course. You get into a live one and then have to break it off for whatever reason. Would be nice to be able to take it to PBEM to finish.
  5. i'd be interesting in hearing what some of the other folks have to say about this as well i've encountered much the same problem trying to execute anything that vaguely resembles intelligent tank tactics (i.e. hull down, cresting a hill for a shot and reversing, setting a pause before cresting the hill then reversing so i supposedly will take a shot at the end of the turn and then move back, and i've tried targeting out of site and moving the tank forward round a bldg or whatever and back expecting it to take a shot) - in just about all of these cases i rarely get what i plan (yes, such is war i know ) what i'm usually thinking is that what is described here and what i'm executing are not meshing up can't count the number of times i've told a tank to crest a hill and pull back thinking it would get a nice fat shot of the side of a panther and found instead that my tank pulled up and then pulled back w/o doing anything other than perhaps shouting to all the world - yo, i'm over here, please come kill me [ December 30, 2002, 09:49 PM: Message edited by: easytarget ]
  6. might do a search on that vid chip set here - seems like i recall others with having trouble and possible solns might lurk in those threads i doubt directx changes will affect anything - in particular switching to directx 9 will no doubt make little difference since no game takes advantage of anything in it yet
  7. interesting who is the specific manufacturing of the vid card you have?
  8. fair enough fate, thought the shot was aimed at me and had me perplexed/annoyed i'll admit and you're right, the trolling was successful  but only momentarily i've posted most of my questions about tips and tricks in the cmbo forum because i realize most everyone here has moved on to cmbb and so most of the discussion here is about cmbb - even if the forum title says it's for both in the interest of keeping this place alive in spite of the occasional troll i'll post some tips and tricks questions as they come up in here instead and see if i get responses in spite of the fact that it's cmbo (i bought the bundle and decided that the best way to approach playing the game was to start where it began before moving on to cmbb)
  9. that'd be cool to see in the next release after action reports with a movie replay to show exactly what really happened
  10. Take particular note of the wall as it runs in front of the three buildings. It disappears and then reappears. [ December 29, 2002, 04:14 PM: Message edited by: easytarget ]
  11. I got your e-mail, but the file, which was compressed in a RAR format, would not open properly. I fired an e-mail back at you requesting that you send it in a different compression format and suggested ZIP (or send it uncompressed). So, I also take it from your post above that attempting to replace the files off the install disk didn't help either. This is a strange one. Need another head in the game on this one. Hey Schrullenhaft, you got any theories or approaches you think he should take on diagnosing why a couple bmp's are messed up and how to fix it?
  12. strange - i have 328310 installed on my xp pro and i drop in and out of the game w/o any issues
  13. yeah, didn't hold much hope the driver change would fix the problem you describe since it wasn't happening to the game as a whole ok, so how about this can you post a picture of what this distortion looks like? seems hard to believe that something limited to a couple bmp's wouldn't be cured by copying fresh ones off the installastion cd onto the messed up ones on the hd
  14. i'm fairly new to the game myself - haven't noticed any way to organize the scenerios chronologically your question did remind me of one i had though anyone know if it's possible to organize, perhaps by creating sud-d's off the scenarios directory where i could put the 3rd party created scenarios i'm starting to download and play as it stands now, when i download them into the scenarios directory and they get mixed into the list with everything else that came with the game i made a promise to myself that when i played a scenario i got from the scenario depot i'd go back and review it and it makes it just that much harder for me to keep them straight unless i segregate them out somehow...
  15. i hate to beat a dead horse, but the 1st thing i'd try would be to fall back to older vid drivers like the 30.87's and see what that does sounds like you've already tried new bmp's for these two files and it didn't help - so it's probably not an issue of corrupted files course i also don't know why vid drivers would affect the appearance adversely of only two bmp's
  16. good to hear you got it to work i must have DAP configed differently than you do anytime i click on anything for download DAP comes up automatically to handle it and automatically brings up options for where i want to save it to
  17. fate, thx for self-identifying as someone i'll completely ignore in the future
  18. copy the wav files into the directory labeled wav in the cm directory take note though, this will no doubt result in some default wav files being overwritten if you don't like how they sound, you can revert back to default by copy the sound files in the wav directory on the installation cd back into the wav directory on your HD
  19. then we're talking about a qualitative issue with transmission and not size in which case zipping it would do a CRC check that would indeed fix the problem one would assume p.s. you're right, i recall a recent post on this topic as well - just too lazy to look for it at the moment
  20. My suggestion would be to use a configurable download program that will not only allow you to set things like default download path easily, it will also speed up the download itself. Check out Download Accelerator Plus by SpeedBit: http://download.com.com/3000-2071-10127147.html
  21. i find it difficult to believe this has anything to do with file size i routinely send digital camera shots as attachments to my relatives that are exponentially larger than the largest PBEM file ever created in fact, it's not unsual for me to send a dozen such pictures on one e-mail and nothing unusual happens whatsoever ?
  22. thx for the reply - still more good info on VT this raises another question i've been struggling with, and i'm pretty sure i know the obvious answer, which is move it off the hill, but thought i'd see if there was anything even a bit more subtle being done to properly position AT guns AT guns strike me as handy and relatively inexpensive ways to help combat opposing armor the problem is my failure to utilize them properly - i've been putting them on hills with great LOS in setup and discovered at least one fundamental truth about AT guns - they blow up real good when arty targets them so, thus far all i've managed to do is waste the other sides arty blowing up my AT guns and i've managed to flank more than a few opposing tanks that start targeting them and while they're distracted i've flanked them with my own armor - amusing, but not terriblly effective use of AT guns so, what are others doing in terms of positioning AT guns to improve survivability? btw, i've bought the truck/halftrack to move them, so not a question of mobility, but more one of proper placement
