  1. thx for the quick responses this is pretty much what i was afraid of but as you said, at least it doesn't change the LOS in the game when it's played - just the way you see it - unfortunately that is a lot of the fun just chalk it up to one more reason (and i've got a whole bunch more) why i'll NEVER buy another ATI product - sad part was, i knew better even when i bought the 9000 - it had been about 3 or 4 vid cards back since i had tried ATI and thought I'd give them another go - mistake and i knew it even at the time
  2. interesting, thx for the info - i looked in the setup for the vid card, there's definitely no setting for turning on a fog table - sigh so, do nvidia card users see the fog?
  3. thx did searches using fog for about the last half hour no real luck strange that i can get transparent buildings and transparent smoke just no fog
  4. Just because I was basically curious how fog would look, I loaded up Fear in the Fog. I'm not familiar with how fog is supposed to be implemented in the game, or what it's supposed to look like, but frankly, there's no fog here at all. The sky looks overcast, that's about it. No fog. I'm using an ATI 9000 128mb radeon card, which while not state of the art, should be more than sufficient to portray whatever the graphics in the game might be. Is this normal? I was pretty much expecting heavy fog to mean I'd have a fog so dense I couldn't see. That's not the case?!
  5. interesting guess i'll have to check out combat mission hq and see what this cmmos thing is all about thx for the reply!
  6. btw, followup question for AstroCat (and this will be a real newb question ) is CMMOS synonymous with mod's? a type of mod? a program that helps load and track mods? yes, i did a quick search using CMMOS and found some hits, but nothing that gave me a clear understanding of what exactly this is
  7. i just ordered and received the combo - just struck me as the best deal - basically only 15 bucks more than most any game i buy and in this case i got two great games my thought was i'd work through cmbo and then eventually install and migrate to cmbb i keep reading about these mods, i guess i'm going to have to download some and check it out correct me if i'm mistaken, but these mods seem to be mostly aimed at improving appearence, sound, f/x, etc right? usually in other games when you talk about mods it's in reference to changes to the game itself that result in a new type game using the same game engine (i.e. Half-Life has a well known mod called Counter-Strike which is essentially an entirely new game) i want to check before i start installing these mods that i'm not messing with the core game itself - if it's just messing with sound and bitmap files that's no biggie because i can just copy back over them all - i just don't want to mess with the game itself
  8. edraynes, i agree whole heartedly with your assessment of the quality of the manuals for the game and i do find this and the tips and tricks forum useful, as well the search function i was thinking more in terms of viewing it from BFC's stand point - if i had this great product that was bringing folks in from other game genres i'd want to make sure they gave my product a fair shake to that end, i was thinking a beginners forum would be one way to make sure that new players got up to speed and demo users went on to purchase no biggie though, i'll keep posting away here when i run into confusion - just thought i'd ask all, speaking of q's, i noticed in my first battle, takes place in paris (for lack of imagination i'm taking the battles in cmbo in the order they show up ), that my shermans on their own make a routine practice of firing smoke right in front of themselves when they run across german armor with a clear shot on them is this a typical human strategy employed in armor battles where your armor is basically outclassed and out positioned by what your facing? i'm not disagreeing with it, just checking out what's going on - because then of course it makes it impossible for the sherman to engage anything i'm a clueless commander (i'm learning though) and rely on my AI to know better what to do than i do - so i was just checking out what this particular tactic was all about
  9. I realize this has been brought up before, but I'd like to ask the current crowd for feedback regarding a newbie forum for CMBO/CMBB. I'm new to wargames and frankly I've been drawn into this world by the 3-D implementation made possible by CM. For folks new to this genre it strikes me as potentially quite beneficial for a beginners forum to exist where newbies (and maybe a couple patient vets) can work through all the questions that vets would find obvious yet newbs still need answered. On forums for games far less complicated than CM you commonly find a beginners forum (quake3 is about as brainless as it gets, yet quake3world has a beginngers forum). This allows new users that perhaps have just grabbed the demo to get their feet wet, not be intimitated, and actually participate in the forum (rather than grabbing the demo, getting stuck, feeling intimitated by the forums and bailing). Again, I know this has been discussed before, sorry for bringing it up again. It's just that I'm new to this place (and wargaming) and it feels from an outsiders perspective like something is obviously missing w/o a beginners forum and I just want to understand why there isn't one.
  10. man, an update of X-Com would be very cool that definitely ranks among the top games I've ever played
  11. i'm about to load it up for the first time tonight at this point i won't be of much help to you in the way of competition since i've just wandered into this particular genre of gaming but given a bit of time i hope to get things figured out in cmbo against the AI and then commence with playing humans (at which point i'll be available as cannon fodder ) [ November 23, 2002, 05:09 PM: Message edited by: easytarget ]
  12. amazingly i ordered the combo pack just this last thursday and got a pleasant and speedy surprise (nice work there battlefront) in the mail today when they showed up - definitely some hefty manuals - yikes i'll be loading up cmbo tonight and get busy providing the AI with an ample supply of incomprehensible tactics shortly
  13. Thx for the additional replies. I'm guessing that playing the AI at first will be the best way to familiarize myself with the game. At this juncture I'd hate to inflict my total ineptitude on a human. Down the road though, I'm definitely going to be all over IP. Nothing beats a human oppoenent. As for the name, it's funny, but you know over time the nic literally becomes who you are on-line. In the other gaming communities I've been a part of I've known people literally for years and years and I've no idea what their real name is or what they look like. So who they are to me is totally dictated by their nic and how they behave using that nic. Interesting. I've been using this one for right at 20 years. At this point, it has a life of its own.
  14. Thx for the welcome guys. I've been lurking for a couple weeks and know all too well that the first order of business is to do a proper search before asking a question. I posted the welcome here because I plan on playing CMBO 1st. And I probably will look into some resources for tactics and weapons. I just figured the first place to start would be to play, find out just how little I know, look to the manual and the forums for answer, then perhaps turn to outside sources. Which does lead me to my first question: If you were me, and you had never played either game, would you play CMBO before moving to CMBB? That's the approach I was going to take because I didn't want to let my CMBO experience get diminished by a "premature" exposure to CMBB. Make sense?
  15. I just ordered the combo for CMBO & CMBB. I look forward to their arrival and diving into a genre of gaming I freely admit to having no experience in. I'm posting this message to say hello and to beg for patience. I've wandered in from the world of FPS and RPG's and have never played any type of wargame. The demo and reviews convinced me these are handcrafted products of great depth worth the time to learn and even though I'm sure the learning curve may be rather steep in my case (judging from the disasterous results in playing the CMBO demo a couple times), I hope with some help from you I can progress. So chances are I'll be hopelessly lost but keenly interested in learning from the many far more experienced players in the BFC forums. That about covers it. Look forward to the arrival of the games and again, thanks in advance for your patience in answering what will inevitably be a string of newbie type questions.
