  1. sounds like a case of bad luck or good luck if you're the sherman tank commander
  2. GF3 and probably even GF4 have been out long enough that card makers are producing decent PCI versions As i've suggested in other posts, one place i like to go to look for and buy vid cards is newegg.com Might check it out and see what you find. here's one for example: http://www.newegg.com/app/viewProduct.asp?description=14-133-045&depa=0
  3. interesting - i'm probably gonna stay with the 30.87's for the moment anyway, since i just stumbled across the fact that they work btw, they work with Quincunx
  4. i've no experience with that chip set, so i'll defer to Schrullenhaft on that it did occur to me though that you might want to also go into the cmbb directory and delete the preferences file the prog creates when it boots up that stores your rez and refresh preferences (called something like combat mission bynd ovr prefs - or at least that's what it's called in cmbo) that way at least you could fire it back up and make sure you set it at the rez you want, but more importantly at the highest refresh rate your vid card and monitor can display at - i.e. i run at 1280x1024 at 85hz refresh - and if i had set it at say 60hz refresh by accident or whatever, it would definitely be harder on the eyes
  5. is there anything you are doing or the game is doing when it crashes? like were you moving the mouse at the point it crashes? was the game calling anything specific like particular mbp's or wav's that might be missing or corrupted? trying basically to find the common factor in all the crashes that points to what hardware or software that might be causing it
  6. for the most part it doesn't matter who makes the card - any company making a 4200 is using the same chipset from nvidia and at least from my experience, the drivers are pretty much all nvidia work too that makes the actual supposed card makers not much more than assemblers of like technology occasionally the card makers will take some extra steps in putting heat sinks on the vid memory and a better heat sink/fan on the vid processor - this allows for better over clocking if you're not going to overclock, then it doesn't from a performance stand point make a lot of difference who you go with - if you look at guru3d or tom's hardware you'll often see reviews of cards that demonstrate FPS results w/in 1 frame of each other go to newegg.com, great place to pick up vid cards at a good price
  7. i think you've still got some debugging to do if things are working the way they're supposed to you shouldn't see any flickering or jerkiness did you load up the 30.87's?
  8. somebody else here was saying replacing a mouse fixed thier problem makes me wonder since the last thing you were doing before it locked up was using the mouse whether there might be something worth investigating mouse or mouse driver related
  9. the oldest drivers i could find for an nvidia chip set card at guru3D were 30.87's when i installed them yesterday it fixed my issues with AA not working (actually you could turn it on and run the game, it just messed up all the menus) on a Ti200 - give'em a try and i'd avoid the latest 40's, while using those i had issues as for AA and anisotropic filtering, you can get to them by right clicking your desktop, clicking on properties, and then clicking on the respective tabs for: 3D anisotropic filtering, OpenGl settings and Direct3D settings - in these you'll find what you're looking for btw, since you're running XP you should have directx 8.1 at least installed - depends on how you have XP setup in terms of updates - but you'll have at least 8.1 because it came with it one further note: what you're describing doesn't sound to me like graphics drivers problems - could be wrong of course - but that sounds more like the game is looking to load something it's not finding and just sits there trying till you reboot or ctl-alt-del before you go to a lot of trouble with drivers you might want to start with the more obvious option of going to add/remove programs, uninstalling CM2 (even removing the directory left behind manually wouldn't be a bad idea) and starting from scratch on the install [ December 09, 2002, 08:56 PM: Message edited by: easytarget ]
  10. good to hear you figured it out btw, if you want to avoid cleaning a mouse ever again, get optical works on pretty much any surface, never skips (at least in my experience - even when playing quick twitchers like Q3) and never requires cleaning
  11. thx for the reply on the trees issue, i guess i'll get more accustomed to figuring LOS out by simply playing the game more at the time i asked i was frustrated by the AI's ability to better position its troops than i was doing - seemed like i was repeatedly moving and then moving again in order to get a clear shot from multiple groups of my infantry - the result was often times i was not bringing as much force onto a given enemy as i had available to me on the fear in fog losses as the germans - i now see that i need to move more troops off the screen than i have (presumably while still keeping enough around to hold the two flags) - and i need to do a better job avoiding casualties it sounds like - i repeatedly got owned by arty - damned if i can figure out how the AI is calling in such accurate strikes in fog since my spotters were having a hard time laying it down only 100m in front of themselves as for points for troops, that's something i had never even considered - where do i find the point value for the units so i can make sure to get the highest value ones off the field in time? i'm assuming since i left armor behind to hold the flags that was probably a big point hit - it just seemed at the time the most efficient way to hold the flags with the fewest units while moving as many infantry off again, thx for the reply on this - it gives me something to work on when i play it again
  12. thx for the response going forward i'll post general questions about cmbo here and scenario questions in the other forum with a clear identifier that it's about cmbo
  13. i decided to run through some drivers and see what would happen - slow sunday, why not anyway, as mentioned elsewhere the latest leaked drivers (40's) wouldn't run AA - which i didn't consider that big a deal - but hey, since it's there as a problem to potentially solve, i figured i'd try some other drivers - easy enough so i went to guru3D and looked for the oldest they still had up, which in this case happened to be the 30.87's so i load'em up, turn on quincunx AA and 4x anisotropic filtering and fire up the game lo and behold, everything works fine and the best part, it actually does look better if you're running a gf3 of whatever flavor and/or speed you might want to give this a go worked for me
  14. congrats! hehe, i figured i'd help contribute to the pointlessness of this thread btw, i'm new to the game myself and honestly say i'm kicking myself for not looking into it a lot sooner - i've missed so much time i could of been playing it - sigh
  15. I've posted and even bumped a couple questions i've posted in the thread i started called fear in the fog - while i understand that this forum is probably slower than CMBB because folks have moved on and this is likely to result in slow replies... it has made me think may be i should check on what others think about where i should be asking these questions the couple questions in the fear in fog thread are about that specific scenario - and while i supposed i could post it scenario talk, i basically haven't because i was thinking the majority of the users of CM still playing BO would be more likely to visit here - further, the scenario talk forum appears dominated by BB discussion just as you'd expect since it's the newer game so, should i just i take my scenario questions over there or post'em here? P.S. the questions are probably both applicable beyond that scenrio though [ December 08, 2002, 07:42 PM: Message edited by: easytarget ]
  16. i just picked up a gainward ti200 and i have the same problem - i can get one or the other, but not both the graphics in CM are frankly of low enough quality that it really makes little difference it won't be something i'm going to worry too much about till the engine re-write - at which point if i still can't get antialiasing and ansiotropic filtering to run together i'll start worrying about it
  17. bump i'm kinda hoping some of the regulars will read my last two posts above and give me some feedback
  18. good to hear! and ppl wonder why game developers are always screaming "it's the drivers damn it, it's the drivers" [ December 07, 2002, 11:06 PM: Message edited by: easytarget ]
  19. got another question - hopefully someone will read my other one and reply to it as well i won as the allies in fear by basically bogging the germans down since i was under the impression i would receive points towards victory if i held the flags and stopped germans from moving off the map to the west i did that and i thought it worked since i got the victory i switch sides and play the battle again - assuming this time my goal would be to control the flags once again and also move as many germans off the map to the west as possible i did both of these objectives and the allies got a tactical victory - even though i did the following: 1. controlled both flags and never during the entire battle lost control of them 2. moved somewhere between 3 and 4 platoons worth of men off the map - perhaps more 3. my casualty rate in infantry and armor was the same as the allies what am i missing here p.s. they decimated me with arty - i clearly have no clue how to use it - seemed like anytime i wanted to use it my spotter had to virtually be on top of the place he wanted it to land due to fog (clearly i'm messing this up as well) thoughts [ December 07, 2002, 11:00 PM: Message edited by: easytarget ]
  20. ok, so back to the battle at hand i'm playing fear in the fog and i've discovered a problem, at least for me if not the AI i'm in the midst of an engagement that is primarily taking place in the woods and i'm finding that the AI seems to be doing a better job of positioning troops such that they have LOS on my guys better than I do on them when i plot the location of an MG for example where i can clearly see LOS to the enemy i'm trying to bring fire on to i discover once he gets in position he doesn't have LOS after all now this isn't do to fog because this current engagement is taking place at fairly close qtrs the trouble i'm having is that it seems like when i'm plotting where my guys will go, it looks to me like the enemy will be in plain sight, only to discover when they get where they're going they don't ultimately have LOS after all and they fail to contribute to the engagement so my question is when setting up the movement of troops in the woods how to you judge where they will have LOS? because from what i can tell so far, my read off the graphical representation i'm looking at is being misinterpreted by me somehow what am i doing wrong here?
  21. i don't know if this is the one you tried, but you might want to check out Rage3d Tweak - it claims to have the ability to change registry settings w/o you cracking open regedit (something some folks just rather not do) check it out here: http://www.3dchipset.com/utilities/ati/tweaking/r3dtweak/index.shtml
  22. as i mentioned in another thread, if you're running antialiasing - try turning it off and i'd suggest if you're overclocking to dial it back down to factory settings and some have suggested falling back to older drivers - at least i've seen this suggested regarding nvidia - don't know about ATI - i just replaced an ATI9000Pro w/ an nvidia Ti200 due to lack of fog ability in the ATI drivers while i never noticed any issues w/ anything other than lack of fog w/ the ATI card, i did notice upon install of the new nvidia card that antialiasing was hosing up all menus much like your description of your symptoms.
  23. i did the same thing my new ATI 9000pro just became my father's x-mas gift
  24. whenever i need new drivers or tweak programs i go to http://www.guru3d.com/ if this is an nvidia chip set based card i'd be real surprised if you didn't have a setting to explicitly turn off antialiasing since this is something i experienced trouble with only yesterday with a new nvidia chip set based card, and turning off antialiasing fixed it, i'd definitely find a way to turn it off rather than just leaving the app to make the determination - because in this case it's entirely possible CM is not handling it correctly
  25. i don't see the existence of cmbo and cmbb forcing me to make a choice between them
