  1. i'm not saying i think this is a bad idea i've just never run into a problem with turn exchange speed that couldn't be solved by me and my opponent simply sending more e-mail in a given day sometimes we exchange 2 or 3 complete moves in an evening so i guess for me this is a soln in search of a problem
  2. well, sounds like you stumbled upon the soln to your problem then good job - got it diagnosed and fixed on the first try and you could go on up to the 30.87's if you wanted to - not sure if it would boost performance a lot though and i'm of the mindset that once you get something to work, there's no reason to keep trying to "fix it"
  3. hehe, came back to answer my own question it was in the wrong forum i assume wouldn't that just be a good reason to just move it?
  4. just curious as to why this thread was locked? seemed like a fairly mundane question about a potential driver issue hardly cause for locking what's up?
  5. we'll need some info about your system to diagnose what's going on do you know how to find what video card and drivers you're running for it? right click on your desktop and click on properties, a menu will come up, click on the settings tab and then click on advanced, you can thenk click on adapter and then the properties button and finally on the driver button this will show you which driver you're running for your video card (and which video card) in order to keep this relatively simple, let's just start with that info and work from there btw, if the game is coming up in a resolution of 640x480 let us know that too

  7. here's follow up news on CGW coverage of CMBB In the April issue covering games of the year CMBB won Wargame of the Year Also in the same issue they did a 4 page coverage of a battle description turn by turn in thier Gamer's Edge section Great coverage for the game and congrats to BTS for winning yet another award from a major gaming mag!
  8. if you took the time to find this website and register in order to ask the question should you buy cmbb... me thinks you've already answered the question btw, buy the bundle, why limit yourself to the eastern front
  9. hanging out in austin, but used to live in houston, does that count? [ February 22, 2003, 06:58 PM: Message edited by: easytarget ]
  10. and the driver saga continues maybe one of these days a new set will come along that works, but i'm not holding my breath or anything [ February 20, 2003, 10:57 PM: Message edited by: easytarget ]
  11. must be some kind of new turf fetish i'm unfamiliar with
  12. btw, this is not browser dependent either, i've tried opera, IE, mozilla and slimbrowser with the same results [ February 17, 2003, 11:12 PM: Message edited by: easytarget ]
  13. no proxy here at home - i do have wireless set up for my notebook - but this problem predates the hooking up the base for that between the system and the cable modem i'm pretty sure i've hosed up some setting in xp pro, i just have no idea what setting or service i've messed up - hell, just for kicks i turned on every service in xp pro just on the chance one of them might affect this - no effect whatsoever  by the by, i'm running xp pro and the firewall i was running was the one built into xp pro - since going with the wireless base station which is also a router i've turned off the firewall in xp pro because the wireless connection wouldn't work with it on - turning it off didn't affect the issue either [ February 17, 2003, 10:07 PM: Message edited by: easytarget ]
  14. for anyone looking for an alternative to IE, you might consider checking out a program called slimbrowser it's small, full featured, and free http://www.flashpeak.com/sbrowser/sbrowser.htm so far, i'm pretty damn impresed by it
  15. do you mean like new hardware purchase? or what to do with your existing config to speed things up? if it's the latter, we'll need to know a bit more about how you have it configured what rez are you running? what are your settings for AA, for opengl, for direct3d and opengl and anisoptropic? suffice it to say, tweaking will only get you so much in the way of performance - folks who like to do it spend a lot of time on it and usually get very little for it - they just like doing it of the items i've mentioned above, lowering rez from say 1280 to 8x6 would be the single biggest bump in performance - assuming for example you were running at 1280 in the first place
  16. yep, month before they gave cmbb a rave review and editors choice and pc gamer in this months issue gives cmbb an award for best turn based game of the year (while we might quibble about the definition, it's still cool that cmbb garnered a game of the year award)
  17. yes, that's one of the features i really like about xp i'd suggest trying system restore and going back to the point before you had problems it will take the system back to the way it was at the point of the restore which in this case should take you back to the drivers you had loaded before things started acting up let us know how that goes i know from personal experience that system restore works - i've used it to go back to a point before i hacked up my registry and made my cdrw disappear everything that was changed from the point of the restore forward is put back the way it was at the restore point
  18. the best thing i can suggest is to not change the drivers and the irq at the same time to properly diagnose and solve your lock ups you need to change one thing at a time and see what the results are and whether it solves the lock ups to that end, i'd suggest changing to the 82's or 87's for drivers - you can get a program to completely remove your current drivers at guru3d honestly, i've never had to use one though, i just uninstall the current drivers using add/remove and then load the new drivers i never use the drivers from the mfg of the card, especially when it's an nivida card because there are invariably better newer ones at guru3d that being said, in the case of CM using older drivers is preferable in many instances simply because they completely work with whatever other settings you turn on (i.e. AA) once you've tried the drivers and see what that does, then you might consider turning to the irq issue if the lock ups still are happening while i'm sure there's a more elegent way to change irq's, i've had random lockups myself due to irq sharing and solved the problem by moving the offending card (a NIC in my case) to another PCI slot - hence a change in the irq my cable modem is external though, so in my case moving the NIC it was connected to was the soln - in your case i'm guessing your cable modem is a card, in which case you could move it to another PCI slot and see what that does for you hope this helps - others will no doubt wander along at some point with more and perhaps better advice - but for starters, try falling back to older vid drivers and let us know how that goes first
  19. one follow up note just read on bluesnews that new drivers are out from ATI that improve performance substantially for the 9700 in particular specifically they are supposed to improve anisotropic filtering by 20-40% and anti-aliasing by 15-35% for those here with the 9700 you'll definitely want to grab'em http://mirror.ati.com/support/driver.html [ February 10, 2003, 08:51 PM: Message edited by: easytarget ]
  20. you lost me on that one if getting more folks to write reviews on scenarios doesn't belong in scenario talk, where does it belong?
  21. one other suggestion would be to bump your refresh rate up to like 75 or even 85 something that i believe will be easier to do at that rez with a 128mb card not positive about mb's and refresh but i do know that everything on my system whether it's the desktop or games looks a lot better at higher refresh rates i run everything at either 1280 or 1600 at 85hz refresh on a 21in and i'd never even think of trying to look at it running at 60hz
  22. bump i think this concept deserves some more visibility
  23. I've found that on my desktop system when I visit Yahoo I get a connection refused message when attempting to click on any link on the page (for example, when attempting to click on more and get the entire news story). I've no idea what setting is causing this and I don't see it either on my work machine or my notebook. I've tried changing security settings in IE to no avail. There's something I'm missing here and if anyone has any idea what it might be let me know. I'm tired of seeing this error page instead of full story on Yahoo.
  24. In the 9th Annual Game of the Year Awards CMBB won best turn based strategy game. While you could argue with the categorization and/or description, it's still nice to see yet another major gaming mag give an award to CM.
  25. Uhu, Might want to see if you can steal a sense of humor from someone before posting again.
