  1. Played the battle Trig 29, hotseat against my father. I was the Germans and he was the Australians. I hit him from one side with the Italians and from another with the Germans with hard concentrated strikes. I took 86 prisoners with having hole squads that took no casualties surrender. Most I've ever seen. - Guderian

  3. Graphics don't make the game sure, but the CM graphics are showin their age pretty badly. I've been trying to find a game that can compete with CM for a while, but have failed miserably, they simply don't exist. When CM first came out, I'd say it wasn't generations ahead at all, I'd say they pretty much invented a new sub-genre of computer wargaming. Great work, nonethless. Even if the "Early War" installment uses the same engine as now, I'd still buy it. - Guderian
  4. Really insightful post, Jason. I'll be sure to keep this in mind next time I play as the Russian and make sure my father reads it. Thanks again. - Guderian
  5. I play hot seat games with my father pretty often. So far the trend is that he plays the Soviets and I play as the Germans. Sometimes, our battles take us into the later war where I have access to the Panther and Tigers. When I put those into the field, the Panther expecially, seems to be able to make real short work of the T-34/85. I always thought that the upgraded T-34 cannon would be able to punch through a Panther's armor, yet this doesn't seem to be the case. In a long range duel, my Panthers will hands down completely decimate the T-34 while suffering little to no losses. Is the upgraded cannon on the T-34 just that shoddy? Was Russian equipment really that inferior to Germany as far as the T-34 "work horse" is concerned? I understand that there are plenty of other vehicles available for the Russians, but was just wondering everyone's thoughts on the T-34 and the later T-34/85. Thanks! Guderian
  6. 'Does it fit well with your experience in CM?" Four minutes seems to be pretty much on target there, actually. - Arkans
  7. The way I'd do an assault is as follows. I usually have a squad or MG unit spraying supressing fire into my assault point (usually a building) and then use the "ADVANCE" command to charge in. Then, the chaos begins. If it's a large building, I hold the corner and bring in rienforcements. If it's a small building, massive amounts of fire begins to erupt. An attack like this manages to take up between 1/3 - 1/2 of my ammunition for the assaulting units! Now, I can use those guys for another assault, but it's hard to take all objectives this way as well as dealing with counter attacks. - Guderian129
  8. How historically accurate is the ammo count for German infantry? See, the problem I have is that I play a lot of hotseat games with my father. He's gotten halfway decent in the game and has given me a run for my money once or twice. Anyway, I usually play a lot of built in scenarios and random battles here in there (the flag lay out on those stink and there are not enough of them! Anyway to remedy this BTW?) and I have one major problem. I run out of bullets. He usually still has plenty of units left and can keep attacking or my attacks on him can only go far because I lose a lot of ammo ( from the fight or suppression fire I use). Is there any strategy to prevent this? Rifle and SMG units seem to run out real fast and a lot of the time I lose momentum or excellent defensive positions due to my units not having enough bullets to shoot. It seems to be a major problem with the Germans (The side I play) and was wondering if there were ways to counter-act this. Thanks! - Guderian129
  9. Dunno, the only reason I'm really into CM is the fact that it's an awesome WW2 small unit combat game. reminds me of a really refined Close Combat. I love it. I'd hate to see it leave WW2
  10. I've just bought the third installment of the Combat Mission series (loved the first two) and am wondering if it included a scenario with the last assault on Monte Casino by Polish soldiers. If not, I was wondering if there is a place to download it or am I on my own? Thanks!
  11. Tried that. I ended up losing a half-track in a scouting mission. The Allies advanced for a bit then decided they were lazy and Carentan wasn't really that important. Guess I'll just be sticking till attacking. - Guderian
  12. Just played Carentan V2 as the Germans. Finished the first three battles and the AI put up a halfway decent offensive. Even though it drove it's armor at first with no infantry escort. Now, I'm not sure if anyone else has had this problem.. But after mission 4 the AI stopped. The Americans did not advance at all. They would go to this bend in the road where a hedgerow was and stopped. Now, I was the defender and it wasn't what I was ordered to do so I waited it out. 5 battle later the AI still did nothing but camp in this one spot. I would have loved to fight a bitter battle at Carentan against Allied paratroopers, but alas no. I managed to get a tactical victory (didn't even feel like I earned it). Are all campaigns like this while playing defender or as far as AI goes should I only be on the offensive or is there a download? Thanks in advance. - Guderian
  13. Well, I finally know the game. I got the rules down ect. Got some nasty surprises.. Apparantly infantry can't fire rifles at a concrete bunker to supress the MG team (that killed a squad that was gonna run while getting covering fire!) and that infantry can't enter said bunker from behind to kill the conscript crew.. Doh! Downloaded all the sky mods (awesome!), smoke and fire mods (awesomer!), and the texture mods for grass and snow (awesomest!). Being on 56k, it was painful. I feel with all them mods I accomplished mods and fear the fact of doing it all again. Anyway, I tried the Carentan operation as the Germans. I knocked out 3 allied tanks and then found out I lost ground.. Kinda infuriating. Second time.. I take out an American platoon command squad and a whole slew of paratrooper divisions while only taking light casualties.. I lose MORE ground! After all that, I think I'm gonna get re-assigned to the Eastern Front! I've been itching to do battle in the brutal streets of Stalingrad. Thanks everyone for your help and advice! I hope I havn't made myself too annoying. You've all been invaluable in helping me enjoy this great game! - Guderian
  14. Well, finally installed it (one step at a time for me), put in the sky mod from the Combat Mission HQ website.. And BOOM! None of the scenarios or operations are available to play. Just "Quick Mission". Am I totally inept with computers (well modding at least!) or this a common problem? - Guderian
  15. Yeah, I just got the game and the girlfriend ALREADY is bugging me! Bah! Doesn't she understand I need a good 8 hours to break myself in!? Anyway, have a slight problem. Been downloading some mods (doing the photo-realistic sky now), but when I try to replace the existing files it states that it is write protected on the CD. Am I doing something wrong? I guess it is also worth mentioning that (with CMBO only) I never had to install it. In fact, I never had a choice. I went to my CD drive, clicked on it, thinking it would go to the auto-launch menu, but it just threw me into the game. Does that have anything to do with it? ANy ideas on how to put this mod in? Thanks in advance! - Guderian Also, I'd like to state that this is a pretty helpful forum. One of the better ones I've seen. Thanks for the welcome and help so far!
