  1. Sounds like using winzip put all the files into a single folder. If you run the self-extractor as is, it will (by default) put the game in your 'Program Files\Strategic Command Beta Demo' folder and then create sub folders for Maps, Campaigns, Snf, Inf, Bitmaps, Sound etc. and then work fine when you double click on 'SC.exe' Hope that helps, Hubert
  2. Glad to hear you are enjoying the game, another gamer encountered a similar problem and it turned out that the default Windows 'Wave Device' was not installed on his system. This can be installed in a number of ways, but maybe the easiest is to go to 'Control Panel' and double click the 'Add New Hardware' icon. Allow windows to automatically search for your new hardware and hopefully it will find the 'Wave Device' and install it for you. Hope that helps, Hubert
  3. Just to quickly answer this one, the combat and movement rules are not going to change for this game without changing the type of game that it currently is. But if and when a more advanced version is made, expect to see some 'grognard happy' changes in this department Hubert
  4. I've been recieving your messages at the support email address, but it seems as though every time I send a response it either fails or gets returned. If you have another email address please forward that to support@furysoftware.com and I'll try to resend the patched EXE for this problem. Hubert
  5. Hi Jon, Please send me a bug report at support@furysoftware.com with your full system specs and I'll help you track it down. Hubert
  6. So if PBEM replay is included then you will all buy the game?
  7. Yeah it will be a problem for users with custom icon settings at higher resolutions. I know that this is not the perfect solution but there are some utilities out there that save desktop layouts and can be used to restore your icon settings after exiting the game. 12ghosts is one and it is available at http://www.12ghosts.com/ghosts/sl.htm Hope that helps, Hubert
  8. Great idea for a thread SuperTed! I would also suggest trying to play a game with the highest difficulty setting and see how that goes. I'm curious to hear the results and how it affects any of the current strategies such as an early invasion of the USSR etc. Hubert
  9. Hi, This is most likely related to the required resolution of 1024x768 and a color depth of at least 16-bits for the game. A bug in the demo does not properly give you an error message letting you know that this resolution is not supported by your system and thus the crash and the DOS window. This has been fixed for the final version but in the meantime what you can do is check you 'Display' options in your 'Control Panel' and make sure that 1024x768 is supported, and if not then maybe installing the latest drivers for your video card will help. Hope that helps, Hubert
  10. Very interesting offer, although the game is almost wrapped up send me an email at info@furysoftware.com and you can give me some more information for maybe future developments. Hubert
  11. Edit: Well what can I say, I've played for so long this way that I've actually started to enjoy it, call it whatever you want but to each his own I guess Still, replay is an idea for the future and if there is an option for both then I think that would make most people happy, but again no promises Hubert [ May 30, 2002, 01:55 PM: Message edited by: Hubert Cater ]
  12. Thanks guys, it's just after a while of hearing that your game is just like 6 or 7 other games it starts to get pretty funny and I couldn't resist
  13. So what's the current list at? So far I think we've got "this game is just like....": High Command Clash of Steel Storm Across Europe Third Reich Advanced Third Reich Panzer General Am I missing anything else?
  14. TCP/IP play will be included in a free future patch after the game is officially released. Interesting idea to have the replay feature for PBEM games. Definitly something to consider, but for whatever it's worth, I actually prefer the non-replay, I think it adds to the FoW when playing against a human opponent but of course that's just me What I've found is that I like the way you can sneak around a lot and especially with naval warfare, you can sink an enemy ship and all they get back is a report of one of their ships lost at sea and not know by whom or what. It could have been by your whole fleet or by a combination of air and naval etc., and I've found it really adds to the overall tension. Now I'm not saying I won't consider it, but maybe this is something to think about as well, but I'll let you guys debate it out Hubert
  15. Good news is that I've been testing this with Ashbery and it looks like I've found a workaround in my code to trick his video card into displaying the text boxes Hubert
  16. Yup, sounds like a very good idea. Honest thing is that time is critical as you can imagine, but if anyone has the time to send me a complete catergorized list of all naval/air/land units at this scale for all countries that were used in the European Theater I just might have the chance to squeeze it in, but of course the standard disclaimer of no promises just in case I can't
  17. Very interesting, if anyone else has been able to repeat this please feel free to post your successes here as well. Good news all around! Hubert
  18. Thanks Ted, missed that one. Just to add there are also defensive bonuses against various types of attack when located on terrain. So that could be an air, soft, tank defence bonus etc. The full values will be available in the final documentation
  19. The delay of US entry could be by as much as 7 turns and not having the port there was in a way to make it less tempting. Hope that helps, Hubert
  20. Right click on the unit and there is an option to rename it
  21. Don't forget that Barbarossa is on the horizon, and during the time period after the Fall of France and June 22, 1941 the German army activity was not all that eventfull. Sitting back and building might not seem like much by May of '41 but there is the bigger picture at hand. Still, good points though and if I can make some adjustments that make it a bit more interesting I certainly will do it. Also keep in mind that although I say the game is 'balanced', it does not mean that both sides square off evenly, the Axis side is still at an overall disadvantage and the balancing is in place to reflect that. Now I am not making excuses here, but developing an AI for the Axis side (i.e. aggressor) is a lot more difficult than developing it for the Allies (i.e. defender) where you have over time a monetary advantage and usually the luxery to build and attack when the odds are just right. Also, as some of you have noted and as I've often found, playing as Allies against a non-cheating Axis AI in most other European Theater games is pointless because it is not even close to being entertaining. What you will find is that I've tried to make an entertaining game when playing as Allies and at the default difficulty levels I think it certainly comes close, now playing at the higher difficulty levels will make it more challenging when playing a full campaign game and you may even lose as has been reported from beta testing. Again, it's only a single year out of the war and there is a lot going on under the AI hood that will not show until a full campaign is played, so under the right conditions expect the UK to be invaded (but not baited into doing so I hope) as well as a few other surprises Also I noticed some posts about playing at the Expert Level and not noticing much of a difference. This may be very true with the setup of the demo since Difficulty Levels take into account the whole war, I would suggest to also try increasing the Bonus Level for a more challenging game. Thanks for the comments guys, Hubert
  22. OK guys interesting points all around, but I think that this thread has strayed far enough from the initial idea of 'First Impressions'. That said I'll lock this thread up Hubert
