  1. WoW!! That link is a goldmine. I'd somehow missed that site. Thanks a million. Here's just a sample of some of the articles available in addition to the one above.... Fighting the Russians in Winter by Dr. Allen F. Chew frightening stuff!! Standing Fast: German Defensive Doctrine on the Russian Front During World War II Chapter II by Major Timothy A. Wray German defensive doctrine (or the lack of it) during Barborossa. Standing Fast: German Defensive Doctrine on the Russian Front During World War II Chapter III by Major Timothy A. Wray Gives an overview of how the Germans adopted a defence based around strong points during the winter of '41-'42,(contains information right down to squad level). Could provide the basis for some interesting scenarios/operations. Soviet Operational Deception: Operation Red Cloak by Lieutenant Colonel Richard N. Armstrong Amazing details on the lengths the Soviets went to to gain operational surprise. The 101st Airborne's defence of Bastogne by Colonel Ralph M. Mitchell ...and on a more general note they've also got the classic The Defence of Duffer's Drift All that's just scratching the surface  It should keep people occupied until the demo at least Thanks again... 5. . Huh? where did he say that? The combined efforts of the Allies defeated Germany, but the bulk of Germany's military strength was diverted and subsequently defeated in the East; for example, in the summer of 1944 the Germans had 165 divisions in the East, and 59 divisions in the West, the Russian summer offensive in Byelorussia alone removed 28 divisions from the German OOB. (From Hastings "Overlord", and Adair "Hitler's Greatest Defeat". As stated above the lend-lease agreement undoubtedly helped the Soviets, but to say it was instrumental in their success is overstating it's importance I think... There was a bit of a debate over this a while back.. Could Germany have won the war with Russia? [ July 16, 2002, 08:35 PM: Message edited by: Kilgore ]

  7. I'd love to go but unfortunately I have a previous drinking engagement in Birmingham Maybe next time. BTW, anybody in the midlands interested in a pint and some CM banter?
  8. Not sure if this is the bit you mean; "Horror has a face, and you must make a friend of the horror. Horror and moral terror are your friends. If they are not, then they are enemies to be feared. They are truly your enemies." I couldn't resist it.. BTW Hi Mom
  9. Here might be a good place to ask if anyone knows if volokusha's (sled/boat type things) will be included with ski-troops, or factored into their movement capabilities.. From what I can gather from Winter Warfare: Red Army Orders and Experiences (translated by Welch) they were pretty common. There was a light version (Volokusha No.1) that was used to tranport the DP plus ammo, and spare barrels. The MG didn't didn't have to be unpacked, it was strappped to sled in a firing position. The whole thing was drawn by the two man crew. Maxims were transported in the same manner on slightly larger sleds, they were also set up to fired from the sled, these were drawn by three men. 50mm and 82mm mortars plus ammo were also transported on multiple sledges (not in firing positions). I can remember reading somewhere that ski-troops will be included in CMBB, just wondering about the above... I always assumed that ski troops were very lightly armed, from the above book it appears they could pack a punch also...

  11. There are lots of celebs dotted around CM. Yesterday I was palying British.. I had cpl. Pike and a cpl. Godfrey (from Dad's army), Baldrick from Blakadder was there too. I also had a Lt. Thatcher and a Sgt. Bond Dunno about Sgt. Brownsword though.....
  12. You have to be within 15m of the wall/hedge to get the full benefit... There's some very good reading on terrain at Tournament House
  13. Something similar happened to me a while back, the AI had a Hertzer and a 1/2 track beside each other, about 5m apart. A round ricocheted off the Hertzer and took out the 1/2 track, the blast from the 1/2 track then took out the Hertzer :)That's what I think happened anyway, I watched the movie a few times, nothing else was targeting either of them, and there was no arty... Since then I seem to have been cursed in CM. My MG's jam every 2nd burst, my tankers seem to study the terrain for boggy ground, and then decide to make a bee-line for it, and my AT guns always take a few "practice" shots before they decide to go for the kill... 14. Wow, some very nice stuff there. Congrtas to the winners. I thought I had a reasonable knowledge of WWII AFV's, but some of the stuff there had me wondering ... I guess we'll all be experts after a few weeks of playing CMBB, the combinations and permutations of equipment are going to be mind-blowing!
  15. There's a vehicle list here Chris Hare's database is here It's got everything..must have taken an age to put together..thanks Chris Hare!! [ June 10, 2002, 08:53 PM: Message edited by: Kilgore ]
  16. Check these out!!.... screenshots of CM from July 1998!!! Combat MIssion meets South Park Freaky stuff, There's a potted history of the whole CM development process here. It says the original release date of CMBO was spring '99, with the beta demo coming out in Nov '99 (GULP!!) [ June 05, 2002, 07:45 AM: Message edited by: Kilgore ]
  17. As demonstrated on numerous occasions reconnaissance will be of vital importance here. I need to establish the best avenue of approach, and what level of reserve there is. If there is only a minimal reserve I'll go for a maneuverist approach, involving a series of lightening fast moves centring on the flank to test the strength and resolve of any rear security elements. If this proves successful I'll attempt to capitalise on my gains and advance to contact in an attempt to envelop the main body. If, however there is substantial reserve, I'll have to rely on a more attritionist approach, using a number of tried and tested set-piece actions to wear down any resistance. I'm not keen on this, as it could be a lengthy and costly process which could result in a drawn out campaign that may result in a stale-mate( ). If this happens, I'll probably follow the maxim "He who runs away, lives to fight another day", and leg it... [ June 04, 2002, 11:20 AM: Message edited by: Kilgore ]
  18. Thanks for taking the time to put the list together Fionn. I've managed to find a couple of them already. There's some very interesting stuff there. It's gonna take a while for it all to sink in properly, but some of the pieces are starting to fit together already. I also got the librarian's telephone number so I guess I owe you a pint as well [ June 04, 2002, 07:40 AM: Message edited by: Kilgore ]
  19. Looks much classier MSBoxer's idea about changing the dark green background might make the white text less harsh on the ol' mince pies..it'd also make black text easier to see if you decide to change it back. Looks like CMBB may not be too far off after all....
  20. I didn’t notice it was all one pic. I put the images next to each other.. [ May 28, 2002, 05:19 PM: Message edited by: Kilgore ]
