*Detect* Minefields, no can do, yeah?
Soddball replied to Eden Smallwood's topic in Combat Mission Archive #4 (2002)
Cruel but necessary. It's like being put on point or getting to go on a patrol to capture prisoners. Just imagine your pixellated soldiers tossing dice to see who gets to stay behind with the booze and chocolate cake. -
You said close contact, but in your first post you said 500-800m. I take your point about the oddness of their choice of target, however. Let's hope your 150mm infantry gun and your squad don't get into a full-blown firefight. I wouldn't put too much money on the squad coming out of it in one piece!

Stupid waste of space posters - not very good
Soddball replied to Andreas's topic in Combat Mission Archive #4 (2002)
Hear, Hear. Burn the people who complain about other people's hard work whilst providing nothing in return. -
No, that happens, particularly in night battles.

Check the link in my sig (the unofficial FAQ) for links to some mod sites. Yes, there is a patch coming out, and it'll be released when it's ready.

Yes, and that was removed from service for being a waste of space.

Question on anti-tank ditches-how common
Soddball replied to Hans's topic in Combat Mission Archive #4 (2002)
What about laying craters as anti-tank ditches? They slow tanks down and seriously increase the risk of bogging and immobilisation. -

??? concerning BMW motorcycle and CMBB
Soddball replied to tracer's topic in Combat Mission Archive #4 (2002)
If I remember correctly, the prime reason was that they would have allowed players to carry out what's called "Gamey Recon". Because in CM you have a spotting system where whatever one unit sees, they all see, Gamey Recon is a system whereby players rush cheap, light recon units towards the enemy, thus getting a good look at their opponent's forces. It was popular in CM:BO (Gamey Jeep Recon). It might also be because motorcycles, though very commonplace, weren't widely used in a combat situation - although I have no idea about this. Wait till one of the bearded grogs comes along to tell the truth. If I'm wrong, spank me. -
It will also depend on the model of Panzer IV. The early models had a short-barrelled 75mm, followed by a 75mm/43 (I think) then a 75mm/48 - so gradually the gun got longer and more powerful. If it's an earlier model, it could be that the round is penetration, but if there isn't much explosive charge IN that round, then it won't kill the tank. It could also be that he has fanatic crews, which can crop up from time to time and won't ever surrender.

Russian AA guns... my dilemma
Soddball replied to Kirill S.'s topic in Combat Mission Archive #4 (2002)
Tch. Nonce. I mean that all the posh girls go to school around here, then stay on. The quality is vastly superior to the heaving chubsters of Essex and East Kent, or the dowdy wenches of the north. -

Good lord, no. That's north of Sevenoaks and isn't even slightly 'county'. One's talking about Royal Tunbridge Wells, don'cherknow. Gorsh. -
Russian AA guns... my dilemma
Soddball replied to Kirill S.'s topic in Combat Mission Archive #4 (2002)
You're not thinking of my part of Kent. Simon Elwen will confirm - all the best girls come from West Kent - it's where all the public schools are. Edited to clarify for our dim cousins across the water: a 'Public' school in the UK is a selective school where the parents pay fees. [ November 15, 2002, 09:26 AM: Message edited by: Soddball ] -

You Americans and your obsession with British teeth! What is it with you people? By the way, "Hygiene" contains an "i". You people - great on teeth and superficiality, nonces when it comes to spelling. Still, I suppose that when the average American weighs only slightly less than the average American car, they have to have something to cheer themselves about. Edited to sing songs to my auntie. Tiger(Pz)(VIE) heavy tank or not?
Soddball replied to ched's topic in Combat Mission Archive #4 (2002)
The Tigers in CM:BO won't be as effective as in CM:BB. In CM:BB the front turret armour is modelled differently, and optics (gunsights) are modelled. The Tiger's optics were notoriously good. To test them in the new game, place a Tiger at one end of a 1.5km map, and a platoon of T34/85s at the other end. The Tiger will rapidly demolish the opposition. Don't forget that the Tiger was designed and built in 1941 and appeared on the battlefield in 1942. By the time the Allies fought it in Normandy it was over 3 years old. By this time, many lessons had been learned from fighting T-34s on the Eastern Front. The Panther is a better tank in many respects - its gun is nearly as good but it has highly sloped armour and much lower ground pressure (reduced risk of bogging). By the time the Allies faced the Tiger, they did at least have some means of knocking it out - Sherman Fireflies and 76mm-armed Shermans and tank destroyers - even though these were rare. In 1942, the Russians could do very little to combat the Tiger. [ November 15, 2002, 03:36 AM: Message edited by: Soddball ] -
