1.
quote:
Originally posted by The_Capt: And have conspired to ensure that CMBO is damn near unplayable with this unholy combination.

The flickering text problem is a minor pain in the kiester, but it hardly makes the game unplayable. My counsel: Don't worry about it. By all means, get the new system AND CM.
2.
quote:
Originally posted by DougieB: Has anyone been successful in running CMBO on WinXP. In anticipation DougieB

I'm running it on XP, Geforce 2 MX -- with the aforementioned text problem. Game works fine otherwise.
3.
quote:
Originally posted by Terence: My problems in winning games of CM are multiple, and span the macro to the micro scale.

Great post, Terence! No doubt many of us could claim the same lack of skill, but we are not so honest.
4.
quote:
Originally posted by Enoch: If anyone wants I have a table that looks a little better in Word format I can email to them.

Would you mind sending me a copy as well? dknadler_99@yahoo.com Thx, and nice work.
5.
quote:
Originally posted by MrSpkr: The Stuart. Okay, Okay, pick yourselves up from the floor. Stop laughing. Stuarts are dirt cheap, fast, and, if used in numbers, can take out any Axis tank as long as proper group tactics are used. MrSpkr

I'm with you. Couldn't believe no one mentioned the Stuart earlier. For the money, it's best tank in the game...
6. As it happens, I had a .50 caliber take out a Marder at 500 meters just today. Lucky, but it saved my bacon in that particular battle. Almost makes up for the numerous times German SP's have routed my .50s before they even get a shot off... ------------------ "War does not determine who is right - only who is left." -Bertrand Russell
7. I've been playing CM steady for three months and have never seen anything like this. I don't doubt that you did, but it's hard to see how such a rare phenomenon could make the game "unplayable." My advice: Get over it and play some different scenarios. ------------------ "War does not determine who is right - only who is left." -Bertrand Russell
8. I don't think lurking has much to do with shyness. More likely it's the knowledge that when you do post, one of three things will happen: (a) you'll be ignored, ( you'll be told your topic has already been discussed to death, or © your thread will promptly veer off into endless discussions of military arcana that have little to do with the enjoyment of Combat Mission. Not that there's anything wrong with that. Grogs are people too, and this forum is as good a place as any for them to plumb their passions. But many of the threads here can be kind of daunting to someone who just played "A Chance Encounter" and wants to talk about it. Or it may just be that lurkers represent those perverse CM owners who prefer to actually play the game, rather than complain about historical inaccuracies or wade through epic treatises on, say, HVAP slope effects. These are folks who, under different circumstances, might ask foolish questions, or offer foolish anecdotes, or compare notes on favorite foolish scenarios. They should probably get their own forum. ------------------ "War does not determine who is right - only who is left." -Bertrand Russell
9. I suppose you're wondering why I've summoned you all here...
10. Just checked out the GI Combat forum. The game may not be a CM clone, but the grognards there appear to be every bit as tedious as they are here.
11. It's based on IQ. Members are much more intelligent than junior members. Usually better-looking too. But there's another way to achieve this prestigious rank: Just make 30 posts. ------------------ "War does not determine who is right - only who is left." -Bertrand Russell
12. The normal size of German and Allied squads was known by both sides. So if you saw an American squad with just four men left, it's not a wild stab in the dark to guess that the squad is short by eight men -- and probably getting a little tense.
13. haha me like funny post sound like bizarro superman
14. I enjoy manually targeting HE on buildings housing a particularly annoying MG or infantry unit. Suppresses the hell out of 'em, and you get the added bonus of blowing up the building real good. I just love that. About the only time I give infantry target orders is when I need to suppress a dug-in enemy unit so other squads can close and eliminate it ... ------------------ "War does not determine who is right - only who is left." -Bertrand Russell
15. My vote is 3. 1) 4 2) 6 3) 47 4) 24 5) 20 [This message has been edited by Monte99 (edited 02-07-2001).]
16. On the other hand, my fast-moving Sherman just snapped off a 350-meter shot at a PzIV and brewed it up real good. I was pleasantly surprised. But I always bear in mind the old adage: "Luck never gives; it only lends." ------------------ "War does not determine who is right - only who is left." -Bertrand Russell
17. I get a kick out of that whimsical, ad-inspired notion that Mac ownership confers a certain level of, um, refinement and sophistication in all things. After all, didn't Pablo Picasso own one? Puhleeze. Mac users buy CM because it's a good game and it's available ( or was until this week ).
18. Haha! I guess it takes about half an hour to change one's underwear after attracting the lethal notice of Wittmann. ------------------ "War does not determine who is right - only who is left." -Bertrand Russell
19. Like all massively multiplayer games, WWII Online will be dominated by bug-eyed geeks who see nothing wrong with spending 22 hours a day playing it, exploiting any bugs they find and annoying the hell out of everyone else. Imagine the worst PBEM opponent you've ever faced, or the most obnoxious poster you've ever seen in a forum. Multiple that by about 20,000, subtract about 30 points of IQ and you've got your basic wide-open multiplayer gaming community. The idea that something straight can be made from such crooked timber is absurd.
20. I hate to point this out since it will reveal that I played the game, but "Ultima IX" is without a doubt the worst game I've ever actually bought. Worse even than some of the others mentioned because you could TELL those titles were pieces of crap just by looking at the box. I hated the game. Absolutely hated it. ------------------ "War does not determine who is right - only who is left." -Bertrand Russell
21. I think Hunter S. Thompson has it about right. He observes that the best we can expect from this game is 0-0 and three scoreless overtimes, since both teams have publicly indicated they don't plan to score any points...
22. I've also noticed that CM never places any whorehouses in villages, even though I know for a fact that there are several whorehouses in Amsterdam. I demand that this crippling bug be fixed by noon tomorrow. ------------------ "War does not determine who is right - only who is left." -Bertrand Russell
23. While agonizing over the morality of playing war games on a computer, we should remember that the movie that sparked this discussion, Saving Private Ryan, was conceived as a profitable venture no less than Combat Mission. It was also conceived as entertainment, and I suppose the vast majority of people who bought tickets to see it did so to be entertained. The fact that good direction and special effects resulted in a fairly realistic portrayal of modern warfare doesn't give the movie any higher moral ground than the game. They both make money by simulating the brutish and bloody business of war. We're probably quite lucky to live in a time when we can gain some small insight into war without having to participate in one. And I don't think it poses any particular moral dilemma that we find the subject so interesting, that we view movies or read books or play computer games centered on warfare. It's a subject of endless fascination for mankind in general. I remember Robert E. Lee's famous quote: "It is well that war is so terrible, or we should get too fond of it." He was talking about real war, of course. I don't think he'd have a problem with a game. ------------------ "War does not determine who is right - only who is left." -Bertrand Russell
