  1. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by Dr. Buhl: Why does the German soldier they capture and then let go again have to shot Tom Hanks and stick a knife in one of the other heroes? I mean someone else could have shot them without ruining the movie. It's just crap if you ask me. What is the moral in that? <HR></BLOCKQUOTE> The German who was captured and released by Miller's men is NOT the one who stabbed one of them later. Two different Germans. Examine the scenes in question and it becomes clear. [This message has been edited by Monte99 (edited 01-03-2001).]
  2. ... and Stephen Ambrose's "Band of Brothers," while not a novel, is getting rave reviews. Follows a company of the 101st Airborne through the latter days of the war...
  3. "The Naked and the Dead" and "The Thin Red Line." Both definitive novels about WWII combat (Pacific theater), and literary classics as well. James Jones' "Thin Red Line" has little to do with the movie of the same name, by the way...
  4. OT, but that grass you're using: what mod? I can see that grid pattern might really help judge elevation... Too bad about those guys rising for a 400-meter snap shot though ------------------ "Arms are my ornaments, warfare my repose." - Don Quixote
  5. I should have gotten back here sooner, but it turns out I was mistaken: After a close examination of the map the next day, I identified all four Pershings -- in flames. Duh! Good thing I didn't see all four during the heat of battle; I would have needed a change of underwear... ------------------ "Arms are my ornaments, warfare my repose." - Don Quixote
  6. Lotta people would buy a computer just to play this game, if they knew how good it was. Trust me: I paid $50 for Ultima IX. $45 for CM is a bargain beyond compare.
  7. Precisely: One rifle report does not mean one shot. You want to keep track of every single round in the game, and assign a distinct sound for every bullet, better start saving for a Beowulf Cluster.
  8. Time limits are absolutely necessary for purposes of the game, and they are not inherently unrealistic. Taking two hours to occupy a strategic location that needed to be taken 15 minutes into a battle isn't quite good enough. In CM, you have to play with the mindset that you're part of a much larger operation and that you are entrusted with one particular objective in that operation. ------------------ "Arms are my ornaments, warfare my repose." - Don Quixote
  9. Geez, Jumbo knows how to set a topic on fire anyway. But somebody on this board, I forget who, disposed of this sort of debate with an elegant observation: In CMBO, as in life, you're expected to win with what you've got. ------------------ "Arms are my ornaments, warfare my repose." - Don Quixote

  11. Anybody remember "Castle Keep?" An oddball 1969 movie with Burt Lancaster and Patrick O'Neal. Featured a floating Volkswagen and more rounds fired from a .50 caliber machinegun than any other movie ever made.
  12. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by I/O Error: Every Vet I've talked to who saw The Thin Red Line said it was a big load of crap. <HR></BLOCKQUOTE> Fortunately, we don't rely on veterans to decide which movies are worth seeing. I agree that there was a certain amount of crap in "Thin Red Line" but I remember one sequence, the Marines advancing up through the elephant grass during an artillery barrage, that was sheer genius. There was another scene, maybe one or two seconds, of soldiers under fire being cowed by snakes rising up out of the tall grass. Absolutely brilliant! A number of other scenes that were real gems. I think it's still a movie I would buy, rather than rent, if I ever get around to getting a DVD player...

  14. Let the laws of capitalism prevail. People want to pay for a bulletin board, fine. People don't want to pay, they quit posting or go elsewhere. My guess is, the concept of paying for forum membership is, at best, a little ahead of its time. ------------------ "Arms are my ornaments, warfare my repose." - Don Quixote
  15. never mind ------------------ "Arms are my ornaments, warfare my repose." - Don Quixote [This message has been edited by Monte99 (edited 12-30-2000).]
  16. The print operations need to change their focus: less news, more analysis and commentary. Same phenomenon that's transforming all the print industry. But in the meantime, combatsim can go to hell. Their decision to go for a subscription fee represents a fundamental misunderstanding of the market. ------------------ "Arms are my ornaments, warfare my repose." - Don Quixote
  17. Combatsim, or combatsimian, or whatever, can go to hell. It's not like there's only one place to post one's insipid opinions. If they're really hoping to survive by making money this way, they're dead already. ------------------ "Arms are my ornaments, warfare my repose." - Don Quixote
  18. I loved the scenario -- nonstop action from the start! And if all those Pershings had shown up I would have been in serious trouble. My favorite moment was using my FlammPanzer to toast a couple of particularly troublesome squads...
  19. One thing about getting to the flags early: It's a psychological edge. Your opponent doesn't know if you're sitting there with a split squad or an entire company, but he has to assume the worst: after all, it's YOUR flag there, not his. While ownership of the VL's is meaningless until the last turn, it's still better to have the enemy reacting to your moves, rather than the other way around. ------------------ "Arms are my ornaments, warfare my repose." - Don Quixote
  20. ***spoiler alert*** anybody who looks further is a cheating swine! * * Hey, just played Elsdorf as the Axis and only encountered ONE Pershing -- which promptly succumbed to my excellent force of Tigers. What's the deal? I thought there were supposed to be a half-dozen anyway.I didn't alter the scenario defaults at all. ------------------ "Arms are my ornaments, warfare my repose." - Don Quixote
  21. Actually, playing with infantry alone can be kind of fun. In a QB today, I was given something like 10(!) .30 and .50 cal MGs, a couple of mortars and three (count 'em) squads of airborne. Went up against a combined-arms defender on fairly open ground. Ended up with a major victory but it was a struggle. I'm growing to like infantry! ------------------ "Arms are my ornaments, warfare my repose." - Don Quixote
  22. I had to go with CMBO as Game of the Year just because I think it really does break new ground -- and is maybe twice the black hole of time that games like Diablo II are. Look: here it is 3 a.m., and although I'm not still PLAYING Combat Mission, I'm sitting here recommending it to everybody. Man, I got a problem..... ------------------ "Arms are my ornaments, warfare my repose." - Don Quixote
  23. I think we can rule out "Battle of the Bulge." IMHO. Nobody mentioned "The Thin Red Line." Throw out maybe 20 minutes of curtains blowing in the wind and you've got about the most artistic WWII movie ever made. Of course, it's loosely based on one of the best World War II books ever written. I liked "Saving Private Ryan" quite a bit. That battle sequence at the end is the thing I keep coming back to -- absolutely stunning work! I don't think they needed to have Tom Hanks firing his .45 at an oncoming Tiger (or was it a PzIV? -- no doubt someone will clarify it), but what the hey? ------------------ "Arms are my ornaments, warfare my repose." - Don Quixote
  24. While I might be shocked and saddened to see my own brave forces arrayed against a bunch of hamsters, I certainly don't begrudge anyone else the right to do so. What I'm waiting for is the mod where all the uniforms are tuxedoes and cocktail dresses. And a few party hats. It's New Year's, after all. ------------------ "Arms are my ornaments, warfare my repose." - Don Quixote
  25. In a QB against the Germans today, an SP and armored car that had been pounding my MGs across the board fell silent at about turn 20. They now show as buttoned, not knocked out or abandoned, but they are both just sitting there even though I'm drawing near the VL from behind with three squads of airborne. Are they just out of ammo? You'd think they'd withdraw if that were the case. As it is, they're gonna be toast... ------------------ "Arms are my ornaments, warfare my repose." - Don Quixote
