  1. Thanks Tiger! I love your latest Tiger, the PSWs, and halftracks. I just discovered them last night on the German site. It pays to dig a little for mods. Treeburst155
  2. I had nothing but problems with my MX300 sound card. I tried three different mainboards with it and still had odd frequent problems. I tried everything. Finally I gave up and got an SBLive! Value. I've never had a sound card related problem since. It sounds good too. Treeburst155
  3. I've got some modified DD low res grass with bold 20m grid that does not give me this line to the horizon effect. The map has a nice border all around it. I use standard DD low res for .bmps 1500-1519. This may be the key. If this doesn't work for you then it is either the 128x128 resolution I reduced DD's grass to (1550-1569) or it's the fact that the grid is 20 meters rather than 40. (I'm assuming his grided stuff is 40 meters). Treeburst155
  4. I was wondering if any of you web savvy guys have any idea why my new cable modem works like a dream with every site I've tried (dozens) EXCEPT Battlefront.com? Even CMHQ is speedy. Every time I click I wait 60-90 seconds before the next page opens. This happens everywhere on Battlefront. I clicked on the new 1.12 patch, waited 90 seconds for the download dialog box to appear and then proceeded to download the patch at 39.8 KB/s. I'm really a bit bummed at this since BF is my favorite site. Is my ISP to blame perhaps? When I visit BF through AOL with my ISA modem I have no problem. Thanks! Treeburst155
  5. I'm a manual freak myself. I foresee picking up this game 15 years from now and giving it a whirl on my ancient P4 1.2 Ghz dust collector in the spare bedroom. An accurate, detailed manual might be nice to have at that moment to get me quickly up to speed. I'm actually considering putting together a revised CM manual that reflects the way things are as of 1.12 (since this is the final patch) for my own use, adding detail and explanation where I feel it is needed. This would not include any changes involving the scenario editor or scenario/ops design since I'm not overly concerned with that aspect of the software. Finding the time to do this is somewhat of a problem. Treeburst155 [This message has been edited by Treeburst155 (edited 02-09-2001).]
  6. I'm with ya Hakko! I'm RGCB too like my grandfather before me. The reason you can tell traffic lights is because they put blue in the green lights and orange in the red lights just for people like us. They don't want us causing wrecks I guess. With CM my only real problem is the bases of the British units. I can't see them at all. What is it exactly you have trouble seeing? CM's really not too bad on me, while I couldn't even play Alpha Centauri until they actually came out with a RGCB patch! I'm still amazed they did that. I've never passed a color blind test in my life yet I see just about everything everyone else sees. I can't tell some reds from some greens is all. Rainbows only have a few colors to me too. I've heard there is supposed to be more. I think warm greens with lots of yellow in them are the easiest to mix up with many red shades. Have you tried DD's grass? I still have trouble but it's better with that. I don't need any Brits sneaking up on me, ya know what I mean? Treeburst155 [This message has been edited by Treeburst155 (edited 02-09-2001).]
  7. The Major has tweaked many things since version 1. Even version 3.0 has seen a few patches/enhancements. If you find yourself having fun with 1.0 then why not pay a mere $20.00 for the latest and greatest. You can play with Canadian forces in 3.0 too. Treeburst155

As a wargamer I quite often think about what I am actually simulating. When a platoon of tanks disappears before my very eyes I am concious of the fact that I just got 16 people wasted because of my latest bad decision. Almost as bad is when I must sacrifice a few to save many. The burden of command must be very heavy in war. I think wargamers have a better understanding of just how terrible war is than the general public. My favorite teacher in HS was a Battle of the Bulge veteran. He was a very tough teacher. You followed the rules and behaved out of fear. I soaked up a lot of geometry in the highly disciplined environment. The surprising thing was that most of the kids liked him. Once every six weeks or so he would announce that he didn't want to do math today. He would ask the class what they would like to discuss. Invariably, the guys would want to know about WWII (the girls were happy just not to have to do math). He was always hesitant to discuss the war but after sufficient poking and prodding we could always get him to tell us an anecdote or two from his experience. I'll never forget them because he wasn't the kind of guy to embellish or exaggerate IMO. We were hearing the truth from a front line infantryman at the Bulge. I wish I had the time to relate one of his stories. Perhaps I will later. He was the ONLY survivor in his platoon at the Battle of the Bulge. According to him, "It just wasn't my time to go."
  9. Hey Deke, that game with the plastic airplanes and kill rings was called Dogfight by Milton Bradley I believe. I loved that game as a pre-teen. There was actually some thinking involved. When I was twelve I bought AH's Blitzkrieg with some allowance money. My dad looked it over, told me the game was difficult to learn and volunteered to teach me. I never read the manual since dad volunteered to do that. About a year later I actually read the rules and realized my dad had dumbed things down quite a bit. For a year I played that game according to dad's simplified rules and liked it. Later on I played Afrika Corps, Panzer Leader, Luftwaffe, and a game called Origins which involved WWII diplomacy, all by AH I believe. Treeburst155
  10. This is good. It needs to stay at the top until BTS responds. Our beloved scenario and ops designers should have the answers to these questions. My thanks goes to all you guys. I appreciate what you do. Treeburst155
  11. Yes, one of my favorite CM related sites. Good stuff there! Treeburst155
  12. I agree with Henri 100%. Study the units in the game, make frequent use of the black info box until you just about know it by heart for every unit. Treeburst155
  13. Coralsaw said he would like to have transparent "match stick" buildings. I liked the idea so I did it. If you would like my "Ghost Buildings" mod just post here and I'll fire it off to ya. The file is only about 16 KB. Treeburst155
  14. I highly recommend this database too. Many, many CM related websites are listed along with virtually all the scenarios available. It's a huge piece of work. Treeburst 155
  15. Relatively open maps give me the impression that my troops are fighting on stained glass, but everything is very clear once you get acclimated. I think the mod looks best on maps with light/moderate trees, and modest hills. BTW, there are no seasonal changes to the treebases or wheat. I get confused when things change colors all the time. I designed the mod to be used without trees. I only use trees to decipher woods from tall pines and occasionally to check for possible LOS from a point. I often wish that tall pines and woods did not share the same treebase as woods spotting distance is much greater than tall pines in the winter. Olle, I found that the grid is too bold and doesn't look nearly as nice at 32x32 pixels. 64x64 is workable, but still not as nice. I figured if I'm going to stare at a heavy grid then I want it to look nice. I'm looking forward to your ultra lowres quick mods. It will be interesting to see what you come up with. Griffin, Thanks for posting the screeny. Can you put one up without fog? Treeburst155
  16. I finally figured out screenshots and converting to JPG, but I get the impression I need some sort of web page to actually post screenshots. I've got a 500 KB shot available if anyone wants it. Treeburst155
  17. Stock CM grass textures are 256x256. None of my BMPs are more than 128x128. I'm talking low-res here. Treeburst155
  18. Leave the battlefield and enter... The War Room!! Are you less interested in photo-realism than terrain assessment at higher views? Do you wish you could see every nook, cranny, dip, and rise on the map from view 4? Do you wish scattered trees and woods were instantly discernable from each other and the grass? Are the British bases hard for you to see (red/green color blind?) Do you detest running into unforseen slopes? If so, you might like my new "War Room" mod. It is a crystal clear, somewhat abstract, representation of the battlefield. Picture a futuristic 3D map lit from below. The mod is a little on the bright side so you might want to play with the Gamma adjustment Charles so thoughtfully provided (alt-G). It's no brighter than the Tremblett mods however. Features: Includes all grass, all treebases, all wheat, brush, and marsh. Bold 20 meter grid on ALL included terrain High contrast elevation colors Super-low resolution for fast scrolling and ordering The brush and marsh are DD's with grid. The wheat is Kump's with grid. I suggest applying Tremblett rough The grass is all mine and it isn't grass! It's... it's....well, informative. The mod was done on a PC using the standard Paint program. I would post a screenshot but I don't even know how to take one let alone post one. I'll work on it later tonight. I also need to put together all the files into a nice package tonight if I see any interest. Everything is so low-res that the entire package won't be much more than a large PBEM file I'll bet. Post here if you're interested and I'll send the stuff to ya LATE tonight. Back up your files!! This mod definitely isn't for everyone. In fact, I may be the only one who can stand it. I love it actually. Treeburst155
  19. I just want to chime in and agree with all the posts above. I played the scenario double blind PBEM. I'm waiting for the final score now, but I'm almost sure it will be a draw. Human vs. human play is well balanced. Lot's of surprises for the Allied player. Thanks Wild Bill! Treeburst 155
  20. I catch myself getting into a bad mood when my PBEM games take a turn for the worse. Isn't that absolutely ridiculous! I have to consciously calm down sometimes. It's a great game. treeburst155
  21. When travelling in a convoy you must allow for slow downs in turns as mentioned above. You must also pay attention to command delay when starting the convoy rolling. Spacing your vehicles about 40 meters apart helps too. treeburst155
  22. I seem to have luck moving spotters into relatively forward and dangerous positions if I already have a nice firefight going with enemy units who could possibly see him in his new position. It seems the troops are too busy dealing with the people shooting at them to notice the spotter. In these instances the spotter has always attained the dangerous position along a movement path that is out of LOS of the enemy. It could be in these situations that I have completely suppressed the enemy. I'll have to pay more attention to be sure. In other words, if the spotter can get to a position unseen he can remain unseen if you keep the enemy busy (suppressed?). AT teams however, are probably a different story. Treeburst155
  23. Sometimes the search feature works amazingly well. Sometimes it can be very aggravating. What I would suggest for newcomers is to ask yes or no questions whenever possible and avoid terms like "bug", "unrealistic", "fix", etc.. If you have a "how" or "why" question you are possibly seeking a lengthy explanation that has been gone over many times before. It takes time to post long answers. Diligent searching is in order in this case before posing the question to the forum. Also, be sure you have read the manual and the various FAQs that pop up. Do a search for FAQs!! As for the old timers, ignore the newbie questions if you are the impatient type. Someone who feels more like helping a newbie will answer his question soon. Don't answer if you are ONLY going to tell the newbie to search. It comes across to the newbie in a negative way (as probably intended) and really doesn't do the community as a whole or BTS any good.
