1. War causes stupid, funny and sometimes crazy things. So what's the beef? CM does a very good job in mimicking the 'reality'. ------------------ It is easy to be brave from a safe distance. -Aesop
2. The last half of 'Apocalypse Now'. That was just plain weird. The first half was weird too, but reasonably accurate. ------------------ It is easy to be brave from a safe distance. -Aesop
3. Does anyone know why the 17pdr was not manufactured in the US, too? ------------------ It is easy to be brave from a safe distance. -Aesop
4. PeterNZer - Coordinating a large attack is a real challenge. Assaulting from various angles and making a simultaneous final drive from all fronts is tough to do. But sooo rewarding when done right! And yes, it can make your head ache. Multi-player communication limitations is an interesting point. It can make all the difference in how things turn out. As an example, the 1941 German invasion of the Soviet Union did so well because their communications were far better than the numerically superior Soviet forces. ------------------ It is easy to be brave from a safe distance. -Aesop
5. PeterNZer - Yea, most of the games I play are 2000+ points. I just finished one in which the defender (my opponent) had 3000 points and, IIRC, I had 4200. Games like that require a lot of time per move. Certainly not well suited for TCP/IP. But I see your point. Smaller scenarios would move much faster. I hope that BTS will allow multi-player TCP/IP at some point. Teaming with another player, where one commands the infantry and another commands the AFV assets would be great! ------------------ It is easy to be brave from a safe distance. -Aesop
6. PeterNZer - If you can move a couple of companies of infantry through wooded terrain, maintain command control, cover the flanks, keep important assets like anti-tank teams positioned well, place spotters in good locations, scout/recon for enemy positions, move a platoon or more of AFV's in a coordinated manner, etc., etc., in a very short time, then I tip my hat to you. ------------------ It is easy to be brave from a safe distance. -Aesop
7. Sten - Is that the official BTS line - no multi-player TCP/IP? You must play really fast. It takes me 10-30 minutes per move for a moderately sized scenario. Longer for big scenarios and/or sticky situations. ------------------ It is easy to be brave from a safe distance. -Aesop
8. Steve - Thanks for the update. Personally I don't see the advantage of TCP/IP over PBEM for two player games. However, multi-player TCP/IP would be a real thrill! Is that what's in store? ------------------ It is easy to be brave from a safe distance. -Aesop
9. I'm currently playing a QB game. On the very first turn one of my M10's damaged the gun of a Tiger Ie(late) with its very first shot at 644m. It then bounced two other rounds off the Tiger's hull before penetrating with regular AP. When my opponent's second Tiger Ie was located I attacked it with two M10's and a M4(105). The Tiger shrugged off all hits, front and side, then dispatched all three assailants. It has since brewed-up another M4(105) and an M8 GMC and shaken off numerous bazooka hits. Go figure. ------------------ It is easy to be brave from a safe distance. -Aesop
10. tink - There are MANY threads on this forum debating this very subject. Check them out and join the party, but I would recommend that you not compare other games to CM. There's no comparison. ------------------ It is easy to be brave from a safe distance. -Aesop
11. Have you no Sharpshooters? I find them to make excellent recon units. And the concensus here is that it isn't a 'gamey' tactic. ------------------ It is easy to be brave from a safe distance. -Aesop
12.
quote:
Originally posted by RMC: CM is not very considerate of peoples' notions of german tank invulnerability...

Amen, brother! In a recent PBEM game my KT was taken out with a front hull hit by a Hellcat at 500+m. It's gotta be a bug! I know it's a bug!! My life is ruined!!! ARGHHH!!!! ------------------ It is easy to be brave from a safe distance. -Aesop
13.
quote:
Originally posted by virtualfreak: I dont see much here to argue about. neither Germany or Japan really wanted a war with the United States...

Why did the Japanese attempt to destroy the US Pacific fleet at Pearl Harbor? Why did Germany declare war on the United States first? Did they not think that war would be the result? ------------------ It is easy to be brave from a safe distance. -Aesop
14. The more intelligence that BTS can program into the TacAI, the better I say. But our little pixel crews are not going to always do it right. I would prefer them to 'overuse' T than not use it at all. And to balance play, I have said previously in this and other threads, T is too prevalent. ------------------ It is easy to be brave from a safe distance. -Aesop
15.
quote:
Originally posted by L.Tankersley: What about FOW? Do you want your tanks firing tungsten at a PzIV you misidentified as a Tiger?

If the crew thinks it's a Tiger they should use T. I would expect to see lesser experienced crews using it when they shouldn't. Would I like to see a PzIV taken out by a precious T round? Probably not, but what does that have to do with anything? ------------------ It is easy to be brave from a safe distance. -Aesop
16. For the Maus sake, it's a good thing it's overcast. But tomorrow's another day. ------------------ It is easy to be brave from a safe distance. -Aesop
17. The mixing of forces did occur in very specific situations. As an example: During Operation Market-Garden (A Bridge Too Far) US Paratroopers from the 82nd Airborne Division captured the bridges at Nijmegen while supported by British tanks from XXX Corps. Such situations are unusual though. So I would recommend using caution when mixing forces. "...can you have french tanks with british paratroopers and American arty..." I shudder at the thought. ------------------ It is easy to be brave from a safe distance. -Aesop
18. IMHO, a TC will save his hyper-shot for the Big Bad Cats. PzIV's and other lesser AFV's can be penetrated with 76 and even 75 rounds. When facing Panthers and Tigers, if the first shot doesn't kill them, you're dead. Who would risk that? The TacAI should grab T no later than the second shot when facing heavy armor. On the other hand, I feel that tungsten rounds are too prevalent in CM. Some units, especially regular tank units, didn't see tungsten until very late in the war, if at all; tank destroyer units having the priority. ------------------ It is easy to be brave from a safe distance. -Aesop
19. Great pics! Thanx for sharing. ------------------ It is easy to be brave from a safe distance. -Aesop
20. Claymore - Great reading!! It's a wargamer's soap opera. Can't wait for the next installment. ------------------ It is easy to be brave from a safe distance. -Aesop
21. I'm bumping this to the top in hopes BTS will comment. ------------------ It is easy to be brave from a safe distance. -Aesop
22.
quote:
Originally posted by Wilhammer "All our smoke was WP, but it was not used for concealment, it had too small a blast. We used it for markers, like when we called in planes or artillery, we marked the area for them with the WP."

BTS, are you reading this? Since air power is so haphazard, a little smoke on a target may entice the flyboys to be more obliging. Thanks Wilhammer, it's very enlightening to hear from the men that did the real fighting. After all is said and done, it's their collective opinions that carry the most weight, IMHO. ------------------ It is easy to be brave from a safe distance. -Aesop
