  1. Agghh.. Civilization I is a classic, I never played II much. (I used up all my time with CIV's before II ) Funny that it classes some games as "<put game name here> series" and some like "put game name here> II" (ie. Mech Warrior II vs. system shock series) I spotted also Ultima there.. *drool* only 7 there, should be whole ultima series *grr* Ps. Wheres the Wolfenstein, the root of all bad and evil doom, quake and halflife types?
  2. I were out to countryside during the weekend and I couldn't see much out there.. It was bit scary when there were forrest treeline raising to horizont and was so quiet. *thinks about all those wild animals, how close they could of get* I heard talking from nearby small bus garage very clearly from over 200 meters away, though (Between two men). Surprisingly well, for normal speech. It was also a clear day, with moon and alot of stars there.. didn't make it any brighter, unless I'd been next to water.
  3. Andrew Hedges, That same thing with bullet speed between PPSh-41 and MP40 goes also with pistols. 7.65mm Luger round is faster than 9mm, but smaller round will lose its velocity sooner than 9mm though. Stopping power will be less at a range for smaller bullet, although, still will have good potential at "close" range. (penetration isn't that much worse at close than with 9mm) Actually in testings it was found that 9mm and 7.65mm would been better choice for US pistol caliber rather than .45, what comes to overall killing capability. (read lenghty article from some book long time ago..)
  4. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by Slapdragon: More than a million M2s were used in World War Two. The 30 round magazine was rare, and the soldiers rarely loaded it with more than 25 rounds. A survey of combat photographs That I took last year in the ETO shows that the M1/M2 increasingly became popular with GIs at the front. Textual research shows it was very very popular with combat engineers and in city fights. Still, at the front, it was always far less common than rifles, and soldiers rarely "traded" weapons except for short amounts of time. In extreme cold, the lighter mechanism froze easier than the Garand. In wet / hot climes like jungles it was extremely reliable.<HR></BLOCKQUOTE> I was talking about those some, not of my own opinion. I've heard alot and people seems very mixed up with M2 existance in ETO. (in large amounts) oh.. yes, M2 does accept also that 15 round magazine. M2 became more credited in Korea and M1 in WWII.. thats what is my impression by what I've read. but well, we're talking about M1 here and thats not automatic
  5. M1 Carbine is semi-automatic weapon, not automatic. It has 15 round stick magazine M2 Carbine however is automatic, but some do still doubt that it was used in WW2 and if was, it was just minor. It has 30 round curved magazine and is possible to fire either in semiauto or automatic modes. So M1 itself isn't comparable to MP43/MP44/StG44 series what comes to automatic mode.
  6. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by WARHAMMER: Just to throw one more log on the fire: I have a 866mhz compaq, with 128ram, but only an 11mb video card. Could the video card be causing my slow downs and quick freezes?? Thanks in advance Warhammer <HR></BLOCKQUOTE> Definately does.
  7. Why would turret penetration kill the crew? If you get turret penetration with 75mm, that has some HE content in it, to make it explode in the tank, you're going to have a mess with those shrapnels. Should be fairly true with german vs. allied tanks. (I heard that germans had AP rounds with small content of HE working better than any other had)
  8. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by boy_Recon: a mate of mine has a geforce and doesn't get the fog effect, if thats any help..........<HR></BLOCKQUOTE> He probably has tablefog disabled by the advanced display properties. With NVidia drivers, its possible to disable tablefog from there. (sometimes its actually off by default, what I've found out)
  9. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by ciks: Well, I didn't post in this thread to discuss tactics, but share my thoughts on Stuart itself. Combined Arms doesn't make Stuart's HE much better, does it? OK, to correct my small mistake and maybe to make it more clear i'll say: "Don't expect Stuart to kill infantry, but it does the job at surpressing it"<HR></BLOCKQUOTE> Umm.. Didn't I talk about Stuart then? That was my feel about the Stuart, that it goes well for a cheap infantry support tank. (read; cheap & fast) hmm, I wonder what kind of thoughts im supposed to post then. "Yes, its the best tank destroyer of CM!!!1"
  10. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by ciks: One drawback of Stuart is, that the 37mm HE has practically no killing effect on dug-in infantry. It HAS 3 machine-guns, which comes handy when you're defending and enemy infantry has to cross open ground, but not on attack.<HR></BLOCKQUOTE> Use combined arms. Infantry is not made to support tanks, but tanks are made to support infantry(!) Enemy who is pinned down by Stuart, is much easier to assault with your own infantry, than if there wouldn't be Stuart, or you would be using manned MG's instead. This little moving MG 'pillbox' moves faster than manned MG, and can support rifle infantry better. (and 37mm adds for a bonus for suppression)
  11. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by Gyrene: The Germans also had their own top secret program of dog-mines. The panzerwoofer mines were fed nothing but T34 shaped snacks, and when they were released in the Eastern Front they ran with great glee towards Russian T34s as they saw them as nothing but a giant snack. No word on what breed was favored for the task. Gyrene<HR></BLOCKQUOTE> I wonder if they ever met german captured T-34
  12. Interesting thing in this is that its probably only front where US made planes fought against and were bought from US during the war. Finns Brewsters and all those what US lend-lease planes that russians used.
  13. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by Kestrl: I'd like to see those Finnish ski infantry try skiing uphill while my T-34/85 tank opens up on them with its 85 mm main gun. <HR></BLOCKQUOTE> Well, in case that your brand new T-34/85 haven't managed to find unpenetrable forrest which covers ski troops. I suspect they were more using 76mm version.
  14. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by Lala: Ski troops were essential to finnish army. They made possible to move fast from A to B and make some quick, silent and very deadly strikes against the Russian troops. A Finnish soldier equipped with Suomi SMG, skiis and white "snow-univorm" is a legend, known as "a white death". What my grandpa' told, Russians were afraid to death 'cos of these sudden strikes when they tried to get some sleep. This would be a fine reason to include ski troops. Maybe a burst to moving in wintertime. That would be nice and very realistic too.<HR></BLOCKQUOTE> In CM kind of game it could be strategically important. Skis would enable you to flank the enemy quicker than they can react with its own troops.
  15. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by Gyrene: Ski troops, yes. Does it snow all year in Finland? There has to at least some semblance of summer in which the Russians would have the run the place, especially in 44 and later.<HR></BLOCKQUOTE> Hehe.. Finland isn't a northpole. theres months of no snow and more when going south. I do live in southern part and haven't seen snow for months :I
  16. Ski troops! ski troops! That would even make them faster than their soviet counterpart. Soviets had troubles mounting their troops on ski's. Grisha, didn't they just sign peace trety, not literally "surrender"? "In September 1944, Finland accepted severe Soviet peace terms. The treaty restored the 1940 Finnish-Soviet border." If finns would of have surrender, then Finland would been communistic and not been able to keep its independence.
  17. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by Mike the bike: But I have seen photos of a F-105 hit in the wing by a 100+mm shell over Vietnam - IIRC there was a guy standing in the hole!<HR></BLOCKQUOTE> If that shell would of exploded, im sure that guy wouldn't been standing there
  18. Those rifle grenades seems tad too effective to me. I've once seen a penetration table for rifle grenades and they were more of the class of purpose made 20mm AT-rifle.
  19. Coyote, You haven't tried Steel Panthers series yet, those are good ones too Classics! and its still kicking along with Combat Mission. Steel Panthers: World At War: http://www.matrixgames.com - free of download (I've bought them all originals )
  20. Is this nice M3A1 mod at all?-)
  21. My Tigers has bad tendency to lose their guns to 37mm's Happens more often than I can bear with.
  22. Actually that one which was driven into the combat, ran out of fuel, then abandoned and captured by the russians. not sure if I remember right but, one of the maus didn't have turret installed yet.
  23. Actually I've been more cursing ammo use as an american than as germans.. So I'd think that US teams spends their ammo quicker. M1919A4 comes with supply for 65 shots, while MG42 comes with 95. I haven't seen it shooting at the targets at faster rate either, in fact just been cursing how people gets over wide open areas and MG42 keeps silent. MG's feels bit useless at a distance... I wouldn't really mind to fire up on a target at 500 meters with HMG 42, seems same as shooting for nothing.
  24. Forgot to mention that germans actually destroyed most of the captured planes themself in incidents. One of the B-17's went down by a single flak hit.
  25. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by Michael Dorosh: Interesting point, - but of course it doesn't mean they used the guns in combat. I have read of captured B-17s being used to fly near US formations and report on their position, altitude, etc., but don't think they were used in combat - ie forced to use the .50s to defend themselves. But I know less about their history than you, probably. I just don't get the impression that they were ever used in a direct combat role.<HR></BLOCKQUOTE> Theres story telling that KG200 once tried to shoot down forts with captured fort while they were in a landing pattern. Although, they aborted it after suspicious US bombers were having guns pointed at the KG200 bomber. (bad colors, markings and no radio calls answered)
