  1. Having observed modern smoke deployment on German and French terrain as modelled in CM. One of the key matters is the wind, and especially the lapse and lull in wind that occurs at sunset and sunrise. As a previous posted said, "Don't get me started on the artillery rules"! Hopefully with CM II a more accurate smoke (and dust) effects will come into use and perhaps for us artillery freaks an optional rule for "weather". Yep, MG's and other weapons in a defense were (should have been if the NCO's are good) sited on key features for use at night and if rain or smoke covered them. Blind MG and indirect tends to travel thru smoke very effectively! Use of smoke also magnifies friendly on friendly fire too. Hans Hans
  2. The solution of course is at some point (after CM II) that a cm variant be produced that has exactly the same types of vehicles and units for both sides. (Like the perfect general, etc) That will give you the "eveness" that some want. Heck give me random anyday! The rules are good for those looking for some structure and excellent for newbies to learn the ropes without having to deal with a Royal Tiger & Flamerthrower assault backed with 240mm
  3. Always difficult They are an excellent economy of force element, yet their vulnerability makes them difficult to use-which is one of the reasons few military forces still use them today. At scenario depot I have a scenario especially built for using guns aggressively. It is called Guns into the Breach or Into the Breach. Fustrating but you might find it useful. Hans
  4. Hi Question what is the best place to upload scenarios I've created? I initially tried Scenario Depot but theres and my emails will not mesh so I need a "second" choice! Recommendation please Hans
  5. Is the size of the email game file more a function of the size of the map or of the number of units; ie if I want to get smaller email files should I reduce the size of the map or the # of units? Thanks
  6. Hi Keith Thanks for the reply, hmmmm comingled threads how nice! Yes I'm trying to upload to you a few scenarios but your email doesn't accept. So I will try and send them to you by a third party Do you have any other emails other than the one listed I might try also? Thanks
  7. http://www.dragonlair.net/combatmission/ Is this still operational, all my emails to it bounce back Anyone know its status? Thanks
  8. Well of course a tank ditch-what is war without a ditch and trenchlines Ability of infantry to build ad hoc road blocks (and take them apart)-engineers faster of course Inclusion of a "staff" officer, ie the player Better modeling of the various HQ's Scenario where some or all of the points can be selected by the player Completely Random QB (you don't know what your going to run into) More eye candy of course concerning terrain Some generic "rear area troops" (using infantry at conscript level is just not correct) The dreaded horse drawn wagon etc The ability to expend points for counter-battery fire to reduce enemy artillery Same for aircover to reduce effectiveness/elim AC More smoke and dust (interestingly my Uncle who fought in the war had that comment about the game, not enough noise, not enough smoke and too damn orderly)! New leaders arising (especially among better trained troops) Recce move, where the sighting ability is greater and the damn fools don't open fire when they see something Much much better artillery controls and design Maintenance option (x amount of stuff might break at the wrong moment)very very optional! Pontoon bridges, better modeling of the engineer's war booby trap/mine buildings Stray shells, smoke noise etc To see that awful gasous plume a diesel engine makes when it revs Weak bridges for those heavy tanks Not so frozen water Assault boats and....river crossing ability for the infantry and the few amphib vehicles A MG that can actually stop an infantry attack! Future Japanese, Island assaults and modeling for the Malay/Imphal/China/ New Guinea areas of war Korea and a 1950's Nato vs Warsaw Pact Arabs vs Israel/Pakistan vs India battles expansion packs probably Vietnam and other smaller war expansion packs 1960-1990 Nato vs Warsaw Pact Desert Storm type (well that was more of a shooting gallery) Tournament game and by that I mean a great deal of effort has gone into making the game "equal". Simply design a game that has sides with similar equipment so those guys can fight it out on the "even" Great game, still playing virtually every night for 2 years now.......love that QB and scenario editor Regards Hans
  9. I'd agree a truck or tractor is superior but horses could and did do their share. In a few special areas they were/are still superior. In rugged terrain they could do better than the older motor vehicles or areas where little if any organized support was available. One reason they remained in use is: Horses could and did take a lot of damage and still keep going. Yes the European horses couldn't take the Russian winter - of course a lot of the Russian horses couldn't either! Lack of fuel and people to maintain motor vehicles While lots of people had "horse" knowledge was another feature. For a short time before WII the US army played around with mixed units that used motorized horse transport! Regards
  10. Gunfire effects on horses. Horses can be easily made to ignore gunfire sounds. This is done by standing around them while they are secured and firing repeatly -in an artillery battery that is easy you just secure them near the guns during practice. After awhile they ascertain that the loud sound doesn't mean pain. Horses will also move about under direct control of their rider despite any amount of noise........if not there would never have been any cavalry charges in the centuries past!
  11. Another good aspect of horse drawn artillery (My father commanded one of the last US horse drawn units) is that they are fairly quiet, its a lot easier to move them around without having them being heard. They come with alot of harness which makes it easy for men to manhandle them if you lose your horses(this happened to my Father's battery in the Lousiana maneuver, he was able to move one section using the crews several miles with ammo) Finally you can eat them if it gets really, really bad. Of course there are LOTS of things wrong with horses too, like the time the Army provided him with a blind horse.........
  12. Ah a newbie The demo is a like the first kiss and CD is the honey moon enjoy the journey
  13. The Russian armor museum at Kubinka includes numerous interesting vehicles, including an M46 captured in Korea, an M48A3 captured in Vietnam, an M60A1 delivered by an Iranian defector, and a Magach-4 (a US M48 modified by Israel to use a 105mm gun). Most interesting is a German World War II Maus super-heavy tank. The West has long known that two prototypes of this vehicle were in tests and captured by the Russians. One story is that the one in the Kubinka museum is a third prototype which was actually completed, but a more likely story (there are several) is that it was built from the two prototypes (which the Germans tried to blow up) and six other unfinished copies of the Maus
  14. First let me say Hanns that you have a really funny name! I would agree with what is written above but with one extra idea. While it is best to use them as soon as possible I have found the following strategy to be useful. If you have a trp place that on your objective. And place your forces in a U shape (depends on the terrain) around the objective at least 400 meters away. Wait til the enemy occupies the objective then let rip with concentrated rockets-then counter-attack! Works nicely plus it make the opponent think he's winning. PS its best to put a few AP mines and some weak troops on the Objective to make them think you are really defending it. Hans
  15. Simple question (yes I tried search but it kept jamming on me) Will/does the computer select FB's for QB? Thanks
  16. Question unanswered? Can you move past the destroyed Pillbox?
  17. Yep But not the warhead in the missile it was the secondary explosion from the "tactically" loaded tank that caused the massive boom A T-72 carried a LOT of ammo and if it all went off (which it tends to do) you get a nasty explosion
  18. Lets not forget the Arab-Isreali wars, I would like to refight portions of storming of the Golan heights, "Chinese Farm" and many others. The 56, 67 and 73 wars offer some solid action I could also see a game for Freeworld vs Communist world from 1950-1985, with the various equipment types.
  19. Sub groups I would suggest for the Italians A seperate category for Milizia Volontara Sicurezza Nazionale "Blackshirts" These fascist units were better equipped ,trained and motivated (compared to normal Italian units). Some consideration could also be for the elite Alpine (not sure if any fought in Russia) and the Bersglieri.
  20. Well my own bullet dodging was limited but to get the true impact of CM Don't shower, shave or eat for two days then turn off the lights. Start up CM Do a QB but you are restricted to using the "1" camera angle. To similuate the fear factor have your favorite love one or enemy attach a pair of self locking pliers (firmly)to your family jewels then attach them to a cord. Have them take the cord into another room and have them roll dice every 3 minutes (3 dice) if they get 3 ones have them pull very very hard - with out warning That might give you an indication : ]
  21. What is the defensive capacity/value of an obstacle? ie besides blocking vehicles does it afford good "cover and concealment" for defenders? Thanks
  22. What........... ah, er...Death to Benito Mussolini!!! ....I think
  23. I once ran a game of CMBO on an Apple IIe computer. Could only get it to make sickening whirling sound but I could tell my Achilles were chewing up Hetzers somewhere in all that green mess on the 2" screen
  24. I've tried various combinations of browser on and off. No not on a land just IP network Earlier you suggested a pinger, could you give me a bit more info on that. Like what kind should i try, etc Thanks
