  1. Hmm, thanks for the tip, Gunsmithcat! I never thought my video card could be the problem, seeing as how the TNT2 was considered top notch several months ago. Then again, I forget how fast things change in the computer world! I'll see if I can find a GeForce going for a reasonable price at Pricewatch.com Any other suggestions? ------------------ "...Every position, every meter of Soviet soil must be defended to the last drop of blood..." - Segment from Order 227 "Not a step back"
  2. I'd have to agree with you, Gunsmithcat. I would love to see a Napoleonic game with CM's interface and beautiful graphics. It's not squad level? Bah! CM is meant to simulate hundreds or at maximum slightly over 1000 men while Napoleonic battles cpntained hundreds of thousands? Bah! The sheer number of polygonal soldiers on screen would be enough to melt my mother board and make my monitor explode in my face? Bah! I want my Napoleon and I want it now! Seriously though, I think by the time BTS finish their current production plans of CM 2-5, computer processor speeds would have increased a great deal. On a related note, have you guys heard about the Pentium 4? It has over 1.5 Gigahertz processor...they redesigned it from the ground up! ------------------ "...Every position, every meter of Soviet soil must be defended to the last drop of blood..." - Segment from Order 227 "Not a step back"
  3. Hey guys, I've recently been experimenting with the beautful high res mods being released by all you talented folk out there, and I have to say CM is starting to play like a WW2 slide show. Ive got a few hundred $$$ to spend on upgrading my computer, so Im wondering what you would recommend to solve my problem. My current specs: AMD Athalon 650MHz processor 64RAM 7 gig HD Riva TNT2 video card On the subject of RAM: Some already suggested RAM to me, but there seem to be many different types of RAM. I've heard that if you buy the wrong kind and add it to your original, your computer performance actually slows down. My question is, how the heck to I check what type of RAM I have so I can buy that exact kind? Thanks in advance for your answers and suggestions! ------------------ "...Every position, every meter of Soviet soil must be defended to the last drop of blood..." - Segment from Order 227 "Not a step back"
  4. I dont care much about the transport, but The COSSACKS, wont's SOMEBODY PLEASE think about the Cossacks?!? ------------------ "...Every position, every meter of Soviet soil must be defended to the last drop of blood..." - Segment from Order 227 "Not a step back"
  5. I think it's a great idea. If BTS lets the mod guys do the graphics (and they are very very good at it), they can concentrate on the interface and new features. Result: Games comes out faster and looks better! ------------------ "...Every position, every meter of Soviet soil must be defended to the last drop of blood..." - Segment from Order 227 "Not a step back"
  6. Im with you guys. I have grown to somewhat dislike tanks. Sure, their big, powerful, and look cool, but they also have the amazing ability of takeing the game directly out of your hands and giving it over to Lady Luck and her fickle ways. I enjoy a tank battle once in a while, but mostly I like inf. battles. I tried a few all inf PBEM's and they were really fun. I'd like to do some more if anyone is interested. ------------------ "...Every position, every meter of Soviet soil must be defended to the last drop of blood..." - Segment from Order 227 "Not a step back"
  7. Oh. My. God. For years I (and many others like me) have waited. The day has come (well, not yet). Maximus, where did you obtain this little info, btw? bungie.com? ------------------ "...Every position, every meter of Soviet soil must be defended to the last drop of blood..." - Segment from Order 227 "Not a step back"
  8. Thanks for the suggestion, Schrullenhaft, ill give it a try and hope it works!
  9. BTW - I tried running the game on smaller installs and with the older patches. Same result. Just something that maybe make this problem a bit more clear. Thanks again! ------------------ "...Every position, every meter of Soviet soil must be defended to the last drop of blood..." - Segment from Order 227 "Not a step back"
  10. Hi guys, Im experiencing a problem with starting up CMBO. I recently reinstalled the game (my hard drive got totally wiped out, have to reinstall everything ), and now that I finally got the 1.5 patch installed back, I try and run the game. I installed it on the maximum size, and the computer gives me the following pop up mssg: "Unhandled Exception" Unhandled exception: c0000005 At adress: 00540515 I click "OK" (the only option given in the mini-window) and the mssg pops up again. I click ok again and another window pops up which says the following: "This porgram has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down. If problem persists contact the program vender." Well, i certaintly hope somebody can help me! My computer has been down for over 2 weeks and now that I got back on the game doesn't work. You can imagine my frustration. Thanks in advance to all you techies out here! ------------------ "...Every position, every meter of Soviet soil must be defended to the last drop of blood..." - Segment from Order 227 "Not a step back"

  12. Why break a Molotov Cocktail over my head and call me a dorf! Us Myth players manage to get into all sortsa games, eh? I used to be a certaint Gandalf the Grey on B.net for Myth 1. Best damn game I ever played, CM or not. I love CM now, and I play CM more then any other game, but Myth just had that Tolkien-esque, fantasy "feel", man, and I loved it. Plus blowing up your friends in games of Slugfest on "For Carnage" was some of the most chaotic fun I ever had. Didn't even care about loosing it was so damn good. My fav map has to be Creep on the Borderlands. I found it to be the most strategicly-demanding map in Myth, and I played 4 player 2 vs 2 teams on it non stop back in '98....oh man, remenicing like this makes me want to go play! Too bad Myth 2 sucked so much. It lagged like hell (for me), crashed a lot, and had these fuzzy graphics on the units which pissed me off, frankly. Anyway, im rambling. Cheers! ------------------ "...Every position, every meter of Soviet soil must be defended to the last drop of blood..." - Segment from Order 227 "Not a step back"
  13. Manta, Diablo sold well because it is a simple minded game for very simple minded people. It requires constant clicking and that's just about it. You don't need to know about real world tactics or anything of the sort to be good at Diablo. CM is a wargame. To learn and master it - hell, just to get involved in it really - you need to have an interest in the time period, history, and weapons. The typical teen looser turned hacker will not spend his time getting involved in CM. There isn't any fun in it for him. CM is slow paced and requires intelligence. Besides, if hackers appeared our community is small enough (there are about 200 people on this board, im guessing?) that discovered hacker would be publically exposed and isolated, and with no one to play against, he would soon leave. For a cheating hacker who gets his fun out of pissing people off by hacking games, CM isn'r going to be worth it. ------------------ "...Every position, every meter of Soviet soil must be defended to the last drop of blood..." - Segment from Order 227 "Not a step back"
  14. I've sat out on this slug fest for a while. Now that it chilled down a bit and all the fanatics more or less left, I think it's safe enough to throw in my thoughts without getting my head gnawed off. CM should be modable, but to an extent. I do not think the ORIGINAL game mechanics should be user modable. That is, "kOoL dOod 666" should not be able to mod all the units in his game to have the fighting prowess of a KT and use this to dominate the ladders. However, I DO think it makes sence that mods of graphics and new 3D models should be implemented. These could be downloaded, and would not affect the game otherwise. I would also LIKE to see the ability to make "TC's" (Total Conversions). Unfortunately, people all seem to agree that this would supposedly "put BTS out of business since everything will be modded in 6 months". Not so. To make a quality mod people will pay attention to requires the same thing needed to make a quality game. A devoted team, time, resources. It needs to be realistic, or no one will play it. So if I make a TC of CM portraying Hamster battles of the 20'th Century, no one will play it (except those psychotics in the Peng thread). If however I use the CM engine to make a Civil War game, and research it properly, people will recognize the good effort and will like it. The mods would be seperate from the game, and would not affect the original in any way. Since BTS has solid plans about their future games, to prevent people getting ahead of them they COULD put a licence on all mods dealing with the Eastern, Early European, and African front. That is, modders can not do specific TC's or mods based on them without BTS' permission. Since BTS has no further plans, other types of wars and conflicts should not be off limit. Just my thoughts. ------------------ "...Every position, every meter of Soviet soil must be defended to the last drop of blood..." - Segment from Order 227 "Not a step back"
  15. It sucks being underage *sigh* Crazy drinking laws...how bout this Sunday in 6 years (you have to be 21 now, right?) ------------------ "...Every position, every meter of Soviet soil must be defended to the last drop of blood..." - Segment from Order 227 "Not a step back"
  16. Hmm...interesting question. For me, personally, the answer is "A" I sometimes find myself drawn back to the Warhammer figurines even after experiencing this wonderful game. I guess its the ability to interact completely and fully with your game, going as far as actually picking up and physically inspecting the counters/figurines. Just my thoughts. ------------------ "...Every position, every meter of Soviet soil must be defended to the last drop of blood..." - Segment from Order 227 "Not a step back"
  17. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by PzKpfw 1: Yes they were in German accounts & since we all know how the Germans were the heroic tacticly brilliant, but hopelessly outnumbered heroes of the Eastren Front, the Soviets must remaimn the faceless , tacticly inept stumbling horde. <HR></BLOCKQUOTE> Gosh, I sure hope youre being sarcastic. Heroic? No, heros don't butcher civilians. If anyone was heroic, it was the Soviets. No, again wrong. It was the Russians, the people themselves who stood the test of both their government and the Nazi invasion and ended up sticking it to the Germans despite heavy casualties and nearly impossible odds due to the massive purges of the 30's. Off topic, I know, but I just couldn't let this stand, sorry. ------------------ "...Every position, every meter of Soviet soil must be defended to the last drop of blood..." - Segment from Order 227 "Not a step back" [This message has been edited by The Commissar (edited 10-17-2000).]
  18. I'm real sorry, but I absolutely despise it when people say " DO A SEARCH " to everything! First off, who knows when this topic was last discussed? Maybe things changed from then to now? Second, I'd like to know the reason for this "No". Since you, Bastables, seem like a person who either has a very good memory or someone who searches for every topic on the board just to make usre if it was discussed before, please do enlighten us to your results. It isn't right that a person should spend half an hour with the terrible search function... No offense or anything, but really, if you're going to tell people to do a search, tell them the name of the post at least! ------------------ "...Every position, every meter of Soviet soil must be defended to the last drop of blood..." - Segment from Order 227 "Not a step back"
  19. Chupacabra, Usually I find your posts funny and interesting to read. Today, you sound like you have a bug up your @$$! Chill down man, go out on the ol' porch and breathe in some fresh air or maybe drink a little java - no wait, scratch that last one, it'll make you more hyper. It's obvious that you are alone with your negative views, and have no real valid points why it shoudn't be done. As can be easily seen by the "blah blah blah" ------------------ "...Every position, every meter of Soviet soil must be defended to the last drop of blood..." - Segment from Order 227 "Not a step back"
  20. Does anyone think that this idea would be viable: A QB set during the early years of the Eastern Front (41-42) with the player(s) able to select their own soldiers, should be limited to the number of Vets and above they can purchase. This would simulate the lack of these sort of troops in the Soviet army so early in the war. Im thinking only sevearl platoons of Vets + should be allowed per QB on the Soviet side, and may even adjust depending on the points allowed for the QB. Simulating that the bigger the fighting force the more likely there was going to be an experienced unit in there somewhere. What do you guys think? ------------------ "...Every position, every meter of Soviet soil must be defended to the last drop of blood..." - Segment from Order 227 "Not a step back"
  21. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by IntelWeenie: I remember seeing an article in a magazine a few years ago (Nat'l Geographic?) about a bunch of surplus M-60 tanks that were cleaned up and dropped in the Gulf of Mexico to form a manmade reef. <HR></BLOCKQUOTE> LOL, That has to be the most crative way to use a tank I have ever heard of. Good one Intel! And thanks for all the info from everyone else as well! ------------------ "...Every position, every meter of Soviet soil must be defended to the last drop of blood..." - Segment from Order 227 "Not a step back"
  22. I agree with killmore. A Veteran is a Veteran no matter which side he is on. Of course, the Soviets should usually be allowed Concripts in large numbers. What I suggest (and this is purely IMHO) is that the Soviet Conscripts, Greens and Regulars should cost slightly less then their German counterparts. In this way, the sheer amount of man power available to the Soviets can be modeled. For Veterans and above however, the cost should be the same as for the Germans, since Veteran soldiers were trained the hard way and were in rare supply on both sides. Again, just my HO ------------------ "...Every position, every meter of Soviet soil must be defended to the last drop of blood..." - Segment from Order 227 "Not a step back"
  23. No hard feelings Tanaka, but I have to agree with Runyan here. IRL, tank crews would have a memory of previous armor locations and would keep the turret faceing the point of contact with enemy armor. Going further, even, they may as well disobey your instructions to advance if they felt that the enemy armor ending up on their flank would not do well for their helth. They may even "predict" the future direction of an enemy tank if it was on the move and did not show signs of seeing them. Of course, all this is impossible with the limited AI capabilities of our current simulations. Thus, I don't think this would be considered micromanageing. What if I want my tank to make straffing passes on a line of guns or infnatry? If I simply order my tank to "Move Fast" across, it will take time before the turret traverses to the desired direction. If I designate the "Hunt" command, it will stop once it locates the nearest enemy. As mentioned, in town fighting, this is all the more important. Maybe I want my tank to move across the street and have the turret pointed dpwn the street so it could suppress enemy infantry or have a decent chance of taking out enemy armor positioned there? Considering the price tag on that multi-ton hunk o' brainless junk, I think that at least attempting to make its survivability a little bit higher isn't such a crime.
