  1. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by The Commissar: The SS and most German armed forces in general were the toughest, most well trained, and proffesional fighting men the world has ever seen. <HR></BLOCKQUOTE> I may be entering dangerous waters here, as my own knowledge of WWII isn't a deep as many here, but... Besides their esprit de corps and their, shall we say "fanaticism", I got the impression the waffen SS weren't so hot compared to the regular army troops. Maybe this was just discrimination from the regular army, who never considered the SS as "professional" as they. By the time of CM, I gather their experience and abilties had improved, but that their record still didn't match up to their reputation. ------------------ "You know our standing orders. 2. Elijah, I'd edit that post ASAP. We're trying to tone things down a couple dozen notches. I know you've made it clear you're joking, but that's not the kind of thing you joke about in the first place. ------------------ "You know our standing orders. 3. Thanks for writing such an articulate response to the recent batch of flame-bait going around. I would have thought your comments were a given to anyone participating on a WWII game forum, but perhaps it's good to have spelled them out. Yes, there are those who might take things too far... but what group doesn't have it's extremists. ------------------ "You know our standing orders. 4. An on-board mortar can fire indirectly, provided it's "in command" by a platoon/company/battalion CO who has LOS to the target. A squad can't act as a spotter, even if it's "in command". I don't know if any platoon CO will work with another platoon's mortar. Technically it should since mortars are teams and not squads (which won't follow other platoon COs)I always consolidate my mortars together under the Company CO rather than keep them with each platoon. ------------------ "You know our standing orders. 5. The subject line may throw you off... it's just a continuation of the "Respect Major John Howard" thread and is anything but an apology. BTW, kudos to you for not only working hard on a great game, but also for doing an excellent job moderating this forum. ------------------ "You know our standing orders. 6. I've yet to use the ambush command in a game yet, but my understanding of the Ambush command is that any enemy that enters the zone will trigger it... you can't specifically say "ambush this target but not this one". Probably the only way to do something like this is simply to keep your units hidden w/o an ambush order and hope the target you want will be close by at the end of the turn. Then, at the start of the next turn order your units to attack whatever specific targets you have in mind. Trouble is, units that are hidden will open fire if an enemy gets too close. 35m may be "too close" for your units and they'll open fire on the soft-skins anyway. ------------------ "You know our standing orders. True... you are right... but in that particular case you did select that option and therefore you would take consequences. Leo "Apollo11"<HR></BLOCKQUOTE> Sure, as a Company/Battalion commander you're willing to accept that. But the tank you've ordered has it's own survival to think about too. Imagine the crew of that tank as the StuG pops into view. Are they going to ignore an immediate threat to keep firing on infantry? It's this kind of direct control that CM tries to avoid. You're the CO. You give your orders and your men do their best to follow them... within reason. ------------------ "You know our standing orders. 8. Here here! My first experience with the game was the lowly tutorial... I confidently pulled my two Shermans over the ridge (per the manual guide) and lost *both* to unseen PzIVs in one turn. I was terrified and amazed all at once. ------------------ "You know our standing orders. Out of ammo become a bunker, out of commission become a pillbox, out of time... become heroes." - The Beast
  9. I supported Rich all along, thinking he *should* be the winner. But I knew the final vote would essentially be a popularity contest and figured he didn't have a chance, so I bet on Rudy. Still happy for Rich though... maybe he'll cover the $5 I lost ------------------ "You know our standing orders. 10. I'm sure it's been mentioned before, but in CM2 I'd like to see the option for Allies (at least US) versus Russia... see if Patton was right! ------------------ "You know our standing orders. 11. I'm guessing (emphasis on guessing) that the current production run has 1.03 on the disc. Perhaps when/if the current stock runs out they'll do another run that'll have 1.04 on it. I ordered my copy fairly well into the 1.03 patch but my copy was 1.02. The patches are small downloads (about 1.5mb) so having to download one isn't so bad. ------------------ "You know our standing orders. 12. Hmmm... maybe you should create something like an impartial review website? ------------------ "You know our standing orders. Out of ammo become a bunker, out of commission become a pillbox, out of time... become heroes." - The Beast
  13. Heh heh heh, hadn't thought about that. Maybe CM2 will let me brush up on my Russian. I almost minored in it in college but never used it... now I can barely remember the cyrillic alphabet, let alone say anything. ------------------ "You know our standing orders. 14. I understand what you're saying, but as noted above I think a lot of WWII buffs are more interested in the Eastern front. As a game, I think there's perhaps more potential in the east too... both sides had their victories and setbacks. Technology played a larger part too, as improvements were made on both sides to counter the other over the years. Compare that to CMs focus on post D-Day western front, where things are a little more one-sided. ------------------ "You know our standing orders. 15. Hello all! I've played the AI enough I think I'm ready for some human players. Between work and home I can probably manage one or two turns a night (US eastern time GMT -5:00) but am very anxious to play I prefer meeting engagement QBs of any size, but will probably want to start out smallish (1000pts or so). I can learn with a fellow newbie or get a few lessons from a vet. Reply here or send me an email with whatever preferences you have and I'll send you a setup. I'll make note of any additional replies for future games, but right now can only commit to one game at a time. ------------------ "You know our standing orders. 16. *Trying to control raging CM fanaticism* 7 out of 10 seems a little low, considering the text of the review was very positive. Their only gripe seems to be the graphics (and they're not very critical) and the lack of TCP/IP. They finish the piece with this: "A big drawback, however, is that there isn't a live multiplayer option. The game supports play by email, and Battlefront.com claims that a TCP/IP update is in the works, but for now Combat Missioners will have to be satisfied playing their motherboard." Playing the motherboard? What about the email support you mentioned earlier IN THE SAME SENTENCE?? TCP/IP will be cool, but in a turn-based game how important is "live multiplayer?" ------------------ "You know our standing orders. 17. Jeez... I think the only way this topic could be flammable is if you threw in PC vs. Mac and Enterprise vs. Star Destroyer Seriously though, here are my reactions to a few of your comments: Quango - "One of the features of close combat, and of AoE is that it takes a skilled player to be able to manage a whole company of troops." Skilled at what? Take two players of equal tactical knowledge, sit them in front of a RTS and the one who can manage the interface better and faster will usually win. Look at the "Reaver Drop" from Starcraft and you'll see what I mean. Anyone can build to a point where they can do this, but to do so successfully involves "twitch" skills... rapidly switching between Shuttle and Reaver, issuing commands quickly and accurately, etc. RTS have made this their focus, and that's fine. Many wargamers want a game where tactical knowledege (and a little luck) alone will win the day. Quango - "I often used to play Age of Empires 1 & 2, on the net against four or five opponents, on giant map settings. You can have anything upto 100 mobile units plus buildings, etc. to organise, control, etc." But just how much are you controlling? You click-drag around several units and simply tell them to move here, or attack there. Formations are involved to some degree in AoE but the computer handles most of that for you. Compare that to CM... you want units to move, but not just "over there". You want them to move to that crest or treeline, you want them to run so far, then crawl and hide. You want tanks to move here, and rotate just so much in this direction to keep your flanks covered. You want this tank to fire at the infantry... with the main gun or not? Button up this tank, but not that one. Shift fire from that mortar, split that squad into two... You might be able to control a handful of units with that much detail in a real-time setting, as I gather CC does (only played it a little) but not in larger CM battles. Quango - "Imagine if AoE was turn based!! It would have remained a niche product.. " Hmmm... a turn based AoE? Can you say Civilization? I wouldn't exactly call that a niche product. ------------------ "You know our standing orders. Out of ammo become a bunker, out of commission become a pillbox, out of time... become heroes." - The Beast
  18. I like the drop down command for special rounds... but in keeping with the "lack of direct control" flavor to the game it could just increase the likelyhood of a unit using specials, rather than a direct command. It's a shame the AI doesn't recognize the need so well in the first place, but it's doing enough already (and very well too). ------------------ "You know our standing orders. Out of ammo become a bunker, out of commission become a pillbox, out of time... become heroes." - The Beast
  19. I prefer Germany, just for the style. If I play Allies I go British... back when I played modern miniatures everybody wanted to play US, so I played as the Brits just to be different. When (if?) CM2 comes out I'll be going all Russian though. ------------------ "You know our standing orders. 20. Well, I admit I'm probably suffering from a little Ubertank Syndrome As I said this is the first game I've played where tanks have been outside the "one hit, one kill" range. Seeing no less than 6 shots bounce off my tanks with no damage had me laughing like a madman... ------------------ "You know our standing orders. 21. Here you go... http://www.ordmusfound.org/ and a great overview shot of the museum... http://www.ordmusfound.org/overview.html ------------------ "You know our standing orders. Out of ammo become a bunker, out of commission become a pillbox, out of time... become heroes." - The Beast
  22. Boy, talk about nerve-wracking! I've played only QBs so far, and this is the first one large enough to get a proper tank duel. I have a pair of Panzer IVs trading shots with 3 Priests, and a yet unidentified Tank and Light Armor at about 700-800m. I've taken out 2 Priests, but the remaining targets seem blessed... my veteran tanks keep missing (and I bought those #$^%# vets to avoid that problem). The enemy, OTOH, keep scoring hit after hit, but none have penetrated yet. I guess I should consider myself lucky they haven't scored a track or gun hit. My question is, why are the Americans hanging around? Eventually (I hope) my Panzers will find their marks again and I'm having no problems penetrating at this range, while it looks like they can't. I know they've hit my tanks at least 3 times each, so they should be confident enough to use APDS/tungsten/whatever... which I assume will make a difference. If I was them I'd pull back. ------------------ "You know our standing orders. Out of ammo become a bunker, out of commission become a pillbox, out of time... become heroes." - The Beast
  23. I'd like to see a hypothetical Allies vs. Russia in CM2. Just to see if Patton was right 8) ------------------ "You know our standing orders. Out of ammo become a bunker, out of commission become a pillbox, out of time... become heroes." - The Beast
  24. 1. You come up to a crest of a hill and shift down to 3rd gear to "Hunt". 2. That exit sound makes you leap under your desk for cover. 3. You're late for work (3 guesses why) and wish for some smoke to cover your approach to the back door. ------------------ "You know our standing orders. Out of ammo become a bunker, out of commission become a pillbox, out of time... become heroes." - The Beast
  25. I'm glad to see some votes here for The Beast... I've never come across anyone else who's even heard of it before. Not so much a movie about war, more of a movie set during one. It follows the story of a Soviet tank in Afghanistan that's pursued by Mujahadeen (spelling?). If nothing else, I think the director gets kudos for all the scenes shot inside the tank, which I believe was actually a slightly larger mockup used for those scenes. If you can get past the Russians all speaking english it's a great movie.
