  1. I was a little put off by this as well... it seems every building has a gas main running through it. I take the blast to be more like debris and such flying outward. Perhaps you wouldn't always get that, some buildings would just collapse, but I don't think it's a big problem. Besides, it looks *really* cool! ------------------ “Fortune favors the brave" - Terence
  2. Great, but I think I'll see if a gaming mag puts this demo on a CD before I try downloading. SFC is a great game that reminds me (in spirit, anyway) of CM... a very polished, well executed game with it's roots in a established tabletop game. ------------------ “Fortune favors the brave" - Terence
  3. I think vehicles should have "inherent worth", but think this emphasis on .50cal Jeeps isn't needed... they should be cheaper than a team. Here's an idea for a "rarity" system for CM2... one that I should think could even be patched into CM... have a choice at setup between 2 different price lists, the current one that reflects combat value, and a second where men and equipment are priced according to their rarity. For the player who wants a "sandbox" WWII game (like myself) and simply wants to fight out battles with WWII men, equipment, and tactics the existing system works fine... you want a battle where the combat values are roughly equal. For the historic-minded player, availability of men and equipment is presumably more important. Battles would be less balanced, and you'd have to guage Axis success by how well they did with what they had, but isn't that the point of playing "historically"? ------------------ “Fortune favors the brave" - Terence
  4. This has come up before. Yes, having each Sherman equipped with them is too much, but the benefit they confer is minimal to balance things out. ------------------ “Fortune favors the brave" - Terence
  5. USTanker - I've been there many times, last time was maybe 2 years ago. I gather they're trying to renovate the place, build a structure to house the armor, etc. Doug Beman - I'm in Mullica Hill, Gloucester County. Don't know where you are, but getting to Aberdeen is easy... take I-95 south about 20 minutes past the Delaware line into Maryland and follow signs for Aberdeen. ------------------ “Fortune favors the brave" - Terence
  6. Depends what you mean by "explosion". The mod you're talking about changes any explosion... from exploding vehicles to the bursts from artillery/mortar/HE fire. I'd setup an artillery FO and watch the fireworks. I've yet to find a reliable way to get vehicles to explode. Usually it's light skinned vehicles, but a Sherman of mine blew up quite exquisitely when a random artillery shell landed on it ------------------ “Fortune favors the brave" - Terence
  7. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by Joshik: What's scary is that I bet Weinberger is probably involoved with lobbying Congress to further a StarWars - type missle defense system, something that will be of very questionable effectiveness, but certainly cost us a looooooooooooot of $$$. --Joshik<HR></BLOCKQUOTE> Not to mention against the ABM Treaty and a source of constant annoyance to Russia and China (and rightly so, IMO) ------------------ “Fortune favors the brave" - Terence
  8. I wouldn't change a thing. Discussion amongst potential players beforehand is the best way to ensure this kind of thing doesn't happen without a single line of code. If players want to use "gamey" tactics they're still free to do so if that's what they agree to. ------------------ “Fortune favors the brave" - Terence
  9. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by ScaryTortoise: Question: In the full version of CM, can you turn off the *turns*. IOW, can you make it so games last until one side is defeated instead of say 40 turns? <HR></BLOCKQUOTE> Each side has a "morale" rating that's displayed along with the "victory" rating. As you lose units the morale rating goes down. When it gets <20% your troops will surrender, ending the game. Some may want to fight it out to the last man, but I think it's reasonable to expect real men to surrender if beaten up that badly... yes I know there are exceptions but this prevents situations where an opponent (AI or human) may have one wimpering squad left hiding in a corner somewhere dragging the game out. ------------------ “Fortune favors the brave" - Terence
  10. I've posted on officer quality before, but dang it I now have a game with a Veteran Airborne Platoon HQ that has NO leadership bonuses... +0 all around. I've always used my HQs for leading specific tasks, but this guy is just a walking radio. ------------------ “Fortune favors the brave" - Terence
  11. 28, married (My wife and I were born on the same day. She's 12 hours older... I sometimes joke that I like "older women") and have been playing wargames since 1985, but didn't join the computer ranks until 1990. Odd college/career path... I have a PoliSci degree and want to be a history teacher, but am currently working in traffic engineering! ------------------ “Out in front every one is holding out. Every one. 12. OK, say you send me a turn with your orders on it. I then load it, and input my orders. With the current system, I can't watch the movie until after you have, so I have to send it back to you. The way you're proposing, there would be times where I could watch the movie *before* I send it to you. The computer takes your orders and mine, "rolls the dice" so to speak and the movie is the result. If I don't like the way a turn played out, I could simply reload the turn you just sent, change my orders, or simply use them again and hope things turn out differently the second time... which can happen. An opponent of mine mishandled a file and wound up sending a previous turn back to me and things were much different. ------------------ “Out in front every one is holding out. Every one. 13. My favorite line so far was when A Brit PIAT team of mine took out a tank and I heard them say: "Put that up your pipe!" ------------------ “Out in front every one is holding out. Every one. 14. Yeah... "shaken" status means they're pretty spooked. Add in spotty visibility conditions and there's no telling what they'll do. I haven't played a night battle yet, but "shaken" usually just means they'll sit around in a panic. Never seen a unit lash out like that. Perhaps afterward they realized who they fired on and that just sent them over the edge ------------------ “Out in front every one is holding out. Every one. 15. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by Maj. Bosco: There's a similar problem with the brits and 2-inch mortars. I'd much rather bring along an AT gun or FO than a bunch of these dormice but they're forced into the unit<HR></BLOCKQUOTE> Going slightly off-topic, but I've found those little mortars to be quite effective. I group them into a tiny battery, usually under my Company CO. Combined, 3 of those can put down a nice smattering of firepower or smoke real quick. ------------------ “Out in front every one is holding out. Every one. 16. I don't mean this to be a flame... but entering a password is a repetitive task? I know I'm a pretty modest player compared to some, but entering the password for the 3-4 email turns I look at each day isn't much of a hassle. ------------------ “Out in front every one is holding out. 17. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by Gen. 18. I haven't installed it yet, but I picked up Janes WWII Fighters this weekend for $8 at my local wholesale club. I believe Silent Hunter II is out sometime this X-mas season. Beyond that, I don't think there's been a WWII naval game out since Silent Hunter... that was '95-'96 I believe. ------------------ “Out in front every one is holding out. Every one. 19. Matt - Thanks for the reply! I hope you guys will really consider this. I shouldn't think it would be that hard to do. ------------------ “Out in front every one is holding out. Every one. 20. Intel - As a fairly newcomer to CM I wasn't aware that 1.3 had that ability. I think I only played a few games before 1.4 and 1.5 came out, and was still letting the AI choose forces for me. Do you know why this was taken out? ------------------ “Out in front every one is holding out. Every one. My grenadiers and my engineers and my tank crews – they’re all holding their ground. 21. I get this problem from time to time. I switch to the lowest overhead view (5) and make any corrections from there... I don't get any shifting cursor in that view. ------------------ “Out in front every one is holding out. Every one. 22. Did a search and didn't see anything on this, so here goes... I'd like to be able to purchase larger units like companies and battalions and delete specific units from them. I do prefer sticking to "realistic" OOBs in battles, but in my QBs I have yet to play as the Americans because their infantry companies (the standard amount of infantry I use) have so many support weapons. Sure, I can work around that and buy 3 rifle platoons, but that doesn't provide a Company CO who can fill in if I lose a Platoon CO. I only ever play as Germans or Brits simply because they have relatively "no frills" Companies that I can afford and still put in a few support weapons. This seems like a fairly simple request... any comments? ------------------ “Out in front every one is holding out. Every one. 23. Just noticed the official design appears to have been approved. http://www.wwiimemorial.com/aboutdesign/index.htm I rather like it, although the traditionalist in me expected to see a big bronze Sherman and a squad of soldiers. Comments? ------------------ “Out in front every one is holding out. Every one. My grenadiers and my engineers and my tank crews – they’re all holding their ground. 25. When you say white, do you mean like there's nothing there? If so you've got a problem. There are mods for different backgrounds, but the standard CM has ones for different weather conditions that should be appearing. ------------------ “Out in front every one is holding out. Every one.
