1. It would be "neat" to see them, but with games lasting around 30 turns (30 minutes) I don't think a medic would serve much purpose in that time. I think anyone with injuries that could be tended to in that much time are already combat capable. I'd rather have bagpipers for my Brits before medics anyway ------------------ “Out in front every one is holding out. Every one. 2. If cost is a concern, I don't think you can go wrong with a Voodoo3 3000. I don't know what they're going for now after the release of the newer Voodoo's but when they came out they were a reasonable $150ish. It's not the latest and greatest, but I think it's got the most bang for the buck. CM, and a number of flight sims and FPS all play great at 1024x768 on my moderate P2-300 w/ 64mb RAM. It doesn't have any FSAA, but as I said, this is a bargain choice. I have noticed some posts here complaining about this card and CM though. I haven't had any problems myself... well, if I esc or alt-tab and return to CM I sometimes get a bunch of white lines across the screen, but esc/alt-tab back out and in again clears it right up. ------------------ “Out in front every one is holding out. 3. For the record, I agree that "Jeep rush" recon is gamey... but I'm leery of any attempts to "fix" this through changing the way wheeled/light vehicles operate in the game. The perfect fix for me is to simply stop playing with anyone I might encounter usign this technique (haven't seen this yet). If someone pulls this and I lose, I won't feel so bad. If I win, it'll be an even more satisfying victory... especially after I take a flamethrower to any bailed Jeep crews ------------------ “Out in front every one is holding out. Every one. 4. I think my wife might be interested... ------------------ “Out in front every one is holding out. Every one. My grenadiers and my engineers and my tank crews – they’re all holding their ground. 5. Once, I had placed a veteran Churchill on a pretty steep uphill slope without noticing it was wet weather. First move, he bogs down. 20 seconds later he was on the move. I assumed it was his experience that got him out. ------------------ “Out in front every one is holding out. Every one. 6. This was changed in version 1.04. Now, the ammo shown in the spotter is the number of actual rounds, not "salvos" as noted in the manual. With the old system, the few spotting rounds you get when a salvo starts weren't accounted for. Some players discovered you could keep shifting the target to get more "free" spotting rounds... not a big deal with mortars and such, but a big problem if it's 14" guns. So they changed the ammo readout to show actual rounds, and deduct the spotting rounds from this number. ------------------ “Out in front every one is holding out. Every one. 7. I'd figure a Company CO (6) consists of: 1 Captain/Hauptmann 2 or so executives (lieutenants, sergeants) 2 or so men to operate/haul radio equipment plus a few extras A platoon/battalion would have essentially fewer/more of the same. ------------------ “Out in front every one is holding out. 8. If your taste in music leans towards the classical, some of Shostakovich's later symphonies have a WWII theme to them. ------------------ “Out in front every one is holding out. Every one. 9. Bruno - The "delay" others are talking about here is a result of anti-cheating measures in the PBEM sequence. When you PBEM, you'll receive a turn and, depending on the sequence either: Plot orders Watch a movie Watch a movie, then plot orders Naturally, this is slower than the "plot and watch" of singleplayer turns. As noted above, with some compromises in security you could cut this down to 2 emails per turn... but it's the 3 email per turn "delay" that people are talking about here. Panzer Man - They're just .txt files. I'm really stuck, I don't know what your problem could be. ------------------ “Out in front every one is holding out. Every one. 10. Yeah, units can engage in friendly fire under spotty sighting conditions. BTW, did you get your email problem worked out? I sent you a setup to your other address you sent me. ------------------ “Out in front every one is holding out. Every one. 11. During a recent game, I was surprised to see that, at the end of a movie one of my squads had taken 3 casualties. I replayed the last few seconds of the turn (when the casualties suddenly appeared) several times. There was no artillery or mortar fire in the area, I didn't hear any gunfire, and there were no yellow lines of fire to the squad at any time. Oh yeah... the squad didn't even do that little jerk-back like they usually do when taking casualties. I've seen tanks killed by unseen units, but I've never seen infantry taken out this way. If it was small arms fire wouldn't I see or hear it? Perhaps I was the victim of a sharpshooter? Maybe those three just had too much combat and decided to give up? ------------------ “Out in front every one is holding out. Every one. 12. The FOW setting will determine how well you and your opponent ID units. With full FOW, your schreck team could be identified as either: Infantry? Team Anti-Tank Team Panzerschreck Team How well it's ID'd depends on a lot of things. But remember, just because you've ordered a unit to "hide" doesn't mean it's hidden... even in a building. If you're close to the edge of the building there's not a lot of cover there. I don't know exactly how the AI works, but if it's ID'd your schreck as at least a "team" they might give them priority over an infantry squad. I probably would. ------------------ "You know our standing orders. Out of ammo become a bunker, out of commission become a pillbox, out of time... become heroes." - The Beast
 13. Veteran infantry are very nice, but the cost of upgrading a sizeable force like a company from regular to veteran can be pretty pricey, so I usually stick to regulars. But I have seen veteran infantry hold positions and throw back attackers where regulars would have pissed themselves and ran. I can usually afford the difference with tanks though. I play mostly small QBs where at most I can have 1-2 tanks and a veteran one makes a big differece. They're more accurate and seem to reload faster... and that makes a difference in tank duels where first hit usually wins the battle. ------------------ "You know our standing orders. 14.
quote:
Originally posted by IRONSIDES: I played the demo and had no problems. I have a voodoo3 2000PCI, will the full version give me problems? 15. As far as I know, map size is set by two, possibly three points: 1. Number of points used 2. "Size" of map selected... small = forces will be packed in, medium = forces will be evenly spread out, large = map will be wider than forces can reasonably cover 3. Type of engagement? Aren't Probe/Attack/Assualt maps deeper than Meeting Engagements? ------------------ "You know our standing orders. 16.
quote:
Originally posted by patboivin: Thankfully, because the big companies only produce so-so products at best, there is a niche for smaller companies that want to produce high-quality, well-designed, intelligent games. CM is one of them. I am not sure but I think Starfleet Command may be another, I say "may" be because I only played the demo for that one, when I bought CM all the other games just weren't important enough to buy anymore. I had to play CM!!

I think the SFC comparison is a good one. Despite being released with some mind-numbing bugs and features that didn't work (all of which have been fixed BTW) SFC is an excellent Sci-fi tactical wargame... one of a few titles I consider *very* high quality. Like CM, it's based on an established, thoroughly detailed tabletop wargame that wouldn't typically appeal to the typical gamer, but in the translation to the PC does. If you're still interested the Gold Edition (includes all the fixes and freebie add-ons) has been out for awhile now and should be pretty affordable... but then SFC 2 is due later this year... ------------------ "You know our standing orders. 17. Well, squads that are "eliminated" aren't necessarily all dead... maybe the survivors are just being a little too noisy yelling out "MEDIC!!!" and you're just hearing them ------------------ "You know our standing orders. 18. Panzer Man, Sure, I'm up for another game. I've only played a few so far, so I'm pretty much a newbie, but know enough to help you out with the tech stuff. PBEM is maybe one or two steps more complicated than playing against the AI, so it's no problem. For the typical smallish battles I've played (700-800pts) turn files are anywhere between 300-800k. I'll send you a "setup" tonight... it'll be an email that starts the game up and I'll include some directions for you. ------------------ "You know our standing orders. 19. Perhaps I'm mistaken, but didn't Hasbro put out Axis and Allies for the computer? Isn't that "family-friendly" enough for them... all you're doing is moving tanks and planes around a map for crying out loud. ------------------ "You know our standing orders. 20. I can just picture some Hasbro suits discussing this game in a meeting... Suit: "Hmmm... this game looks pretty boring, all those charts and numbers! How are we going to market this?" Marketing Weenie: "OK, the game's called Squad Leader right? What's the first thing to come to mind... leader... a leader of men... he must be tough, confident, but has a soft side... maybe a love interest back home? Why not go with that?" Suit: "Hey, I like that!" Lawyer: "Whoa... hold on... is this a Swastika? This'll be on the shelves right next to our Ultra Deluxe Family Games Pro Gold Edition! Do you know how many calls we'll get on that? Walmart won't touch it with a 10' pole!" Suit: "Good lord!!! We can't have any of that, although I like your idea about the whole leader thing." Marketing Weenie: "Thank you sir" Suit: "You! Hiding in the corner! Get back to your people and have them take out all this technical junk and put in more humanity... and get rid of those Swastikas... and throw in 20% more minorities too!" Designer: "Yes master." ------------------ "You know our standing orders. 21. OK, another "tell us your CM story" thread... Last night I was showing a friend the game and used my last available points to buy a Kubelwagen. I rushed the Kubelwagen ahead for "recon", but mostly just to show off what might be a cool kill shot. The Kubelwagen was quickly dispatched, but the single crewman survived. I left him alone in the woods he ran into (my usual policy with crewmen), but as the battle progressed he was in a good position to go behind enemy lines so I figured I'd have some fun. In his travels he came across two bazooka teams standing next to each other and, while he was only officially credited with 1 casualty, took out both teams with his pistol! I'd like to think he was made at least a Sharpshooter after the battle! ------------------ "You know our standing orders. 22.
quote:
Originally posted by Banshee: You could easily sell that pic to Hasbro for their upcoming release of Squad Leader

Heh heh heh... What's going on with Hasbro anyway? It seems like all I hear about SL now is how you'll receive letters from home... CRAP!!! ------------------ "You know our standing orders. 23. Also, while less mobile .50 cal teams are much more rugged than a jeep. I love it when I take out a jeep (or just the crew) and it keeps careening forward for a few seconds. ------------------ "You know our standing orders. 24. Doesn't it also depend on the month/year you're playing? ------------------ "You know our standing orders. Out of ammo become a bunker, out of commission become a pillbox, out of time... become heroes." - The Beast
 25. Check out the products page... I think it's $8 in the US (Canada too?) and a little more outside. Of course it's worth it! ------------------ "You know our standing orders. Out of ammo become a bunker, out of commission become a pillbox, out of time... become heroes." - The Beast
