Well, there's a reason people play PBEM games... The CM AI is the best wargame AI I've seen, but that doesn't make it smart. It's going to do stupid things, and it's never going to make brilliant tactical or strategic decisions. That said, I've been beaten by the AI once in a while, and I've been surprised by how good some of the choices it makes are. For instance, I've seen the AI shift its axis of attack when it became obvious its advance wasn't working.
