  1. @nox_plague Done... we'll see if posting makes any difference. I still think BFC needs to regularly pester them, and if they are doing so, they should post that to the community so we know what's going on.
  2. Extremely frustrating that the drivers that I must use from AMD that actually work (22.6.1) are nearly nine months old. I would think some level of "pushing" from Battlefront is in order here as AMD catering to a self-described "tiny company" is not practical unless they are regularly pressured that a half-dozen driver iterations have not solved the OpenGL problem. Frankly, I point the finger at both Battlefront and AMD for not addressing this issue in a timely manner. To forego a driver upgrade to fix 5% of my gaming time is just unreasonable; Battlefront and AMD should not expect this! And the flashbang effect is not tolerable, therefore I cannot upgrade if I want to continue playing the CM series of games.... ... Note, I have seen no one post yet an "out of memory" message in CM Cold War after the email turn played out in the most recent drivers. Reverting to 22.6.1 fixed this as well.
  3. Need to echo what is in here. Extremely frustrating that the drivers that I must use from AMD that actually work (22.6.1) are nearly nine months old. 4. Actually, I have been "around" a similar period of time thou not active since the CMBB days. There was a VERY successful meta-campaign (Combat Mission Meta Campaign-- CMMC) back in the early 2000's whereby the strategic layer was developed from scratch and run by several "GameMasters." It was perhaps the most fun I've had playing the CM series of games.... I think your meta-campaign idea will take off within months of CMBN being released. It will, however, based at least on my experience with CMMC, take a LOT of work on your part to keep it running. CMMC exhausted many a game master for the several months it ran.
  5. As you can see, haven't posted in SOME TIME.... With that, PLEASE Steve polish the game before release even if you miss the 2010 target. I respected Stardock (Galactic Civ, Sins of a Solar Empire) as much as Battlefront until they absolutely massacred their release of Elemental: War of Magic despite numerous external beta testers urgings. Indeed, there was even a mention in their threads of "don't do an initial release like CMSF from a another well-respected independent company that suffered the slings and arrows from many of their fans." Despite all warnings, they choked it. If there is one lesson: When it's READY is certainly a viable and necessary approach...
  6. Haven't posted in awhile-- waiting for CM:N. However, this caught my attention as I'd love to see the product better publicized. Any thoughts with respect to putting CM:N on Stardock's Impulse? I think they are a company more aligned with your philosophy and I don't think they'd gouge you to the same level of Steam....
  7. ...play with my plastic soldiers that I used when I was five years old since the lincoln logs provided better protection than CMSF...
  8. I thought there was some good LOS/LOF discussion in here so a self-serving *BUMP* as we await, with baited breath, an answer...
  9. No response from Steve in a week on any threads. I think he must have been eaten by a Grue (boy, that dates me). Wasn't Zork great?
  10. Thought this better go on someone's list (taken from another thread). ugggg on above. Regards, Leblaque
  11. Perhaps BF can respond to all our Action Spot and LOS Table musings.... We'll probably be told, "been there, done that."
  12. Steve, I've read considerable, though certainly not the bulk of the LOS/LOF threads. Given my non-programming and layman's background, however, forgive this particular question in advance. Nevertheless, given your statement above, would it be possible to do LOS checks in the current center action spot as well as each CORNER of the 8x8 grid? I originally thought this might take five-times the LOS "computing power" (four corners, one center) but then realized that would be repetitive counting as a corner of one square is actually the corner of most likely FOUR squares. Closing off a typical tic-tac-toe grid equals "36 independent square-corners" but only "16 shared corner points." 16+9-center equals 25 LOS checks versus 9 of the present center-point action spots. In this model, this equates to 5x the LOS checks (four corners, one center) for the price of less than 3x the "LOS computing power." Bottom-line, I have no idea if this is easily programmable but I assume that such a map-grid LOS table-check would resolve a huge number of LOS issues presently observed.... If I sound like an idiot here, don't bother responding Regards, LeBlaque
  13. This comment is extremely disconcerting to me. I'll be frank, I do NOT own an Nvidia card and thus cannot really sympathize. However, I wonder why this excessive amount of "patch time" is being spent on a small percentage of the user base? It was stated in a recent thread by BF that it would not be productive (at the present time) to port and focus on the "5% of the customer base that uses the Mac OS." Then why, for pete's sake, are we focusing so much effort on circumventing a bug created by the hardware/software of one Nvidia card series that doesn't even occur on every platform? Given the outstanding patch issues noted throughout these boards, is this not a misappropriation of valuable time, particularly given the MacOS comments? I recently re-installed Silent Hunter III and noted in the beginning of their manual that the 'software protection may not work on some DVD/CD drives' and it was left at that. Glad I didn't own one of those drives! Yes, BF did not provide such warning for the 8800 as they were unable to identify this issue (that is really not theirs). But if other companies can so readily abandon perhaps a larger customer base because of faulty drives, why can't BF re-focus efforts on the bulk of the community as opposed to chasing something that may never be fully resolved until Nvidia solves their problem?? Flame away... Regards, LeBlaque
  14. LOL... well NO, it's not, but it isn't the ONLY computer game on the planet either. If this one ain't yet working well, I can always play Civ IV, Forge of Freedom, Carriers at War, blah, blah, blah. </font>

  16. I've purchased CMSF and it sits now idle on my hard-drive, not yet played. I have spent (too much) time lurking on the forums, reading the positive improvements with each patch interation as well as the continued difficulties with graphic cards, FPS, Infantry TacAI, remaining bugs, etc., etc. I would like opinions, from those that can be subjectively-objective , and not naysayers or "fanboys," if the product is worth playing yet, particularly since I'm willing to wait and play when it is in an "state of true readiness." Ultimately I am interested in creating some scenarios and campaigns, as I did for CMBB, and thus am anxious to get into the Editor. However, again I am willing to wait until there is a general sense it is worth my (limited) time and effort at this point. Feedback much appreciated. Regards, LeBlaque
  17. Use to be long-time poster back in the CMBB days... now lurking awaiting CMSF. Had to ask, though I'm sure it has been asked before (and I did a minor search so don't fire), can you mix and match blue/red forces? Just noticed that Humvees were delivered to the Iraqi Army and knowing they also have some T-72's and Iran is just over the border... Regards, LeBlaque
  18. An excellent preview! Very much looking forward to it. Did everyone note the... ahem... suggested release date of July 27? (ducking). Of course this isn't the "official Battlefront word" but...
  19. Welllll, since lots of us old foges have been watching and NOT posting, thought I'd put my two cents in after about 3 years. I wonder if we'll be able to have a Combat Mission Meta Campaign (CMMC) with CM:SF?? HMMMM? General "Blunderbuss" signing in here from that CMMC foray... and boy what a time CMMC was!
  20. This has been discussed ad-nauseum on the Technical Forum. It's not going to be repaired before CMBB, if at all. Doing one turn e-mail after suffering the tcp/ip crash works often but not always. I make it a habit in tcp/ip to always hit ALT-S before hitting GO. If we get a crash, we play one email turn using that file and the problem frequently is resolved.
  21. You can make one yourself with the paint program inc. with Windows. Just paint an existing .bmp the transperent pink (I used the German mod swastika to start mine), re-save to a pink.bmp or some such, and then you can re-number the pink.bmp to the appropriate nationality icon (dont' forget to save the original somewhere else!). I can't recall what the nationality icon .bmp numbers were right now-- 1007? 7000? Something like that.
  22. I haven't had the juevos to give this a try in an actual game but thought it was an interesting concept.... I replaced the unit nationality icons with a pink transperancy bitmap. As a result, in game you either SEE the cm unit or you don't; no more reminders of where a unit was/has been/might be/etc. Now you field commanders have to REMEMBER where the units on the field have been observed, just like our real-life predecessors who didn't get a big Icon-From-God placed on the landscape. "Did I see a squad over there or was it a platoon?" "Was the Panther behind THAT hill or THIS hill?" For those of you mentally adept, I imagine it might provide an interesting change of pace. Perhaps I'll get up the guts to give it a shot with my regular opponents. For those of you who give it a shot, tell me what you think.

  24. I would suggest that if you are interested in the strategic elements, then CMMC has a wealth of gameplaying to offer. In the forthcoming updated CMMC webpage you will see the game described as an "Operational Exercise." I would submit that at least 66% of player time is devoted to the strategic aspects of CMMC. This is represented by discussion of Corp/Division/Brigade strategy, Intelligence Report development and review; development of orders for each turn at all levels, requests for artillery, requests for air assets, requests for reinforcements, requests for supplies, requests for bridging materials, requests for armour--- you get the picture. In addition to this, there is the usual banter at the Officer's Club. These communication elements are done on limited-access forums reprensenting radios/telephones and the like that emulate a chain of command system. In sum, CMMC is really a strategic/operational game utilizing CMBO as the means to resolve engagements. It is an excellent melding of both worlds. I would recommend it highly to ANYONE interested in spending 4-10 hours weekly of CM-related gameplay; gameplay that makes a "difference" in the grand scheme of a Corp-level operation set in August '44.
