  1. I would have to concur that without exception CM is the best supported entertainment software product, bar none! As far as gaming perfection, that is rather elusive, but there have been some revolutionary games that were damn addictive including: X-com UFO Defense ('nuff said already on this one) Command and Conquer (the true Granddaddy of RTS) Crusader No Remorse (isometric view Champion and predecessor to that "new look") Half-life (if you don't have this, your not a computer gamer ) Tribes (revolutionized MP team-play possibilities) Wing Commander (the genesis of all space-based simulators) Baldur's Gate (perhaps single-handidly resurrected the role-playing genre) Railroad Tycoon (the roots of most micromanagement "God-games") ah, there are just too many to list
  2. I have to agree with the prior post; FPS does take skill, but often of a different kind. However, if you wish to demonstate your tactical prowess on an FPS, grab yourself Battlecom, RogerWilco, etc., get a few of your friends, and see what "tactically sophisticated" carnage you can reap on Frontline Force (HL Mod) or Counter-strike (another HL Mod) with good communications and a plan.
  3. Lots of good games mentioned as I like most of them, but besides CM the games that have stolen most of my time are: Half-life including the Mods Team Fortress, Counter-strike and most recently Frontline Force (if you don't have this, you have to get it). RollerCoaster Tycoon-- a absolutely silly but enthralling game of amusement park development/mangement and probably the best overall product the now defunct Microprose has put out in the last 3-4 years (barring the patch/patch/patched version of Falcon). Tribes. But wait on this one as Tribes2 will be out shortly. BEST multiplayer FPS ever. P.S. If you think 25 is old, you should read some of the other posts on average age . 4. Originally posted by John Kettler: gossamer,.....What you've read about in the history books will come to life for you when you have Combat Mission..... I have a slightly different take: having played CM, I went back to my history books and read, read, and re-read. I've uploaded five user-created scenarios/operations--most fair, a few good, all FREE to the users of this wonderful game--just because I've been enthralled with CM. How many products make you want to GIVE BACK to the user community at large? How many products make you want to learn the answer to, "How many Tigers were in the Battle of the Bulge? (A: just one)" In short, how many products motivate you to learn all over again? In short, just this one....
  5. 1) "I gotta go play with my kids...." 2) "I gotta go play with my wife...." 3) "I gotta play just one more turn...." 'HQ is the frame, your CO the canvass, but you, the men in the field, are the artists that will paint the pictures of victory'
  6. I'm surprised I haven't seen this before but in a recent TCP/IP battle my airforce took out one of the two bridges in "Move-it or Lose-it!" It just went KABLOOOEEEEE after a direct hit (I think the plane was targeting the nearby Stug). Although this really looked cool, it somewhat shocked me. If aircraft can take out bridges "accidently" then what happens in those scenarios if there is only ONE bridge? Is there code built in that prevents destruction of that bridge if there is no other way across a river? Maybe we can expand this whole thing a bit and have Engineers blow and repair bridges while we're at it . I really curious about all this and some feedback would be appreciated.
  7. I hate to ask this, MadMatt, but I have a special interest since I'm in the CPX--- when you say the next release (2nd beta, final, whatever) will be "soon," does that mean 2-5 days or 2-5 weeks ? Thanks!
  8. http://docs.sun.com/htmlcoll/coll.648.2/iso-8859-1/NUMCOMPGD/ncg_goldberg.html#704 A frighteningly complex article on Floating Point calculations. Maybe there is an answer in here-- maybe not. It's mostly Greek to me....

  10. "Fiddlers' Green" Halfway down the trail to Hell, In a shady meadow green, Are the Souls of all dead troopers camped Near a good old-time canteen, And this eternal resting place Is known as Fiddlers' Green. Marching past, straight through to Hell, The Infantry are seen, Accompanied by the Engineers, Artillery and Marine, For none but the shades of Cavalrymen Dismount at Fiddlers' Green. Though some go curving down the trail To seek a warmer scene, No trooper ever gets to Hell Ere he's emptied his canteen, And so rides back to drink again With friends at Fiddlers' Green. And so when man and horse go down Beneath a saber keen. Or in a roaring charge of fierce mêlée You stop a bullet clean, And the hostiles come to get your scalp, Just empty your canteen, And put your pistol to your head And go to Fiddlers' Green.
  11. I believe the Voodoo 2's don't support non "blocky" smoke. I saw that in another thread. Unfortunately it is the same for my Voodoo Banshee and the explosions don't look great there either. Guess we'll have to upgrade. Hoping the Kyro is all they say it is going to be...
  12. As I indicated at the end, I don't want to padlock as that disallows set-up by the player if they so choose. Padlock does work, however. Any other ideas?
  13. This is very strange, but when constructing a battle I've noticed the following: 1) Trucks will not stay where they were originally placed even when this is computer set to stay at computer default. 2) Pillboxes and bunkers ROTATE 180 degrees away from the friendly map edge. In other words, if the friendly map edge is North they will face South REGARDLESS of the diretion I rotated them (and want them to stay!)to for computer set-up. 3) Barbed wire. Same thing-- rotates. I had a bunch of barbed wire lined up parallel to one another leaving "rows of holes" for everyone to walk through I don't want to have to padlock these as I'd like the player to have flexibility when setting up. But I'd sure like to keep everything from "moving around" HELP BTS!
  14. Being non-military, could someone give a brief definition of each? I think I know the latter one but not the first three. Thanks.
  15. Am I the old guy here? Bought SL sometime in High School-- think a sophomore in '76-- I guess I should check the box copyright. Anyway, though I haven't played it in years I went to the garage a few nights ago to see if I could convert any of the scenarios to CM. Haven't opened that box in a loooong while! Maybe you all will see a conversion of a scenario here in the near future .
  16. Don't recall... point being, I think, is they shouldn't dump any A/T weapons on infantry if the SOUND of a tank is nearby
  17. I just happened to stumble upon this: Hope it can give you a clue to resolve BLACK SCREEN DEATH! (tho banshee probably appropriate for all cards) Occasionally the Banshee driver installation results in a situation where an invalid refresh rate is generated on first reboot. The solution for this involves booting into Safe Mode, opening Device Manager and checking that the Monitor selection is correct. If correcting this does not resolve the black screens, then there is a problem with improper setting of default refresh rates. Reboot into Safe Mode and set the monitor refresh rate to 60 Hz and reboot. If you succeed on getting into Windows, but the screen goes blank when you attempt to change resolutions, download the 3rd-party refresh rate setting tool, HzTool from: http://hem.passagen.se/doxx/ You can use this to set all refresh rates to specific values within the capabilities of your monitor.
  18. A REGULAR German squad wasted a Faust on a nearby US squad when a Sherm was within 68m right next door! And it wasn't a "miss," it was a deliberate shot on the infantry. Kinda reminded me of the same kind of "A/I bug" in Close Combat 2 (one that was patched) where fausts were wasted on soldiers when armor was nearby (or even not-- you kinda wanna SAVE those). Hopefully BTS will take a look and tweak to save the A/T weapons-- I would think even a Conscript wouldn't be tossing A/T weapons away against infantry! Any feedback?
  19. Thanks for where to post bug reports-- I think we should have a Special Forum for that though given Tech Support seems more designed for HW-related. Any support on this? Shugger: Glad you seem to have the same experience. I would submit that if the infantry chooses NOT to attack the tank, than at minimum they should hang on to the A/T weapons rather than waste them on the foot soldier. Thus, I think the A/I should be slightly tweaked to reflect this. I'd be well BELOW conscript, and believe me, I wouldn't be tossing away any A/T weapon
  20. bhahahahhaa! I'm not telling! Nah, a Regular German squad wasted a Faust on a nearby US squad when a Sherm was within 68m right next door! And it wasn't a "miss," it was a deliberate shot on the infantry. Kinda reminded me of the same kind of A/I "bug" in Close Combat 2 (oooh, bad word) where fausts were wasted on soldiers when armor was nearby (or even not-- you kinda wanna SAVE those). Hopefully they'll take a look and tweak to save the A/T weapons.
  21. Was wondering if we could have another forum to post bug reports. I have one from the Gold Demo that wasn't listed in the patch. Any recommendations out there on what the best way to do this is? LeBlaque "6 meters....5 meters.... can't be, that's in the ROOM!"
