  1. Thanks Madmatt for the further clarification and the "Death Clock" origin. Like I said, it was one of those things that really put a smile on my face, as so many other things I saw in CMBB. The game will just blow people's socks off.
  2. That is me after debating with CMplayer WineCape: I can tell you really want that monitor.
  3. aka_tom_w , The term "Death Clock" was something jwxspoon used to explain why tanks were still firing on penetrated targets, or those knocked out. Its a good term because in two words, I assumed the operation meant that there is a random amount of time from tank out of commission to time the crew vacates. And until the crew vacated, the target was still considered a threat. This is also similar to how Jeff described it. Sometimes the crew vacated very quickly, other times I saw many hits on the same tank, even though I knew it was knocked out (wasn't firing back, moving, etc). Well, maybe not "knew", but pretty confident. Which penetration hit actually took out the tank? --shrug-- You would still get the occasional exploding tank, and the TacAI would immediately stop firing on it. All in all, a welcome change. Just make sure you bring along a few extra rounds of ammo. [ July 17, 2002, 12:49 PM: Message edited by: kump ]
  4. From Xavier I agree. Others: There is nothing that I stated that is wrong. The use of terms like "evil" and "bad", regardless if true or not, is most times subjective depending on what culture and society you are from (and what history books you are reading). I'm absolutely positive that Nazis were evil, but I do understand that my culture, education, and upbringing has some effect on my beliefs. I know better than to debate with you on who was bad and who was good and do not wish to go there. So I generalized. And so I also bid this thread farewell.
  5. Derfel: Please do. WineCape: 1024 x 768 is perfect for it. It supports all resolutions up to 1600x1200. It will do the later, but requires additional hardware. The actual screen is something like 1098x1098 pixels. That means resolutions above 1024x768 do look a little better, but not worth slowing down the computer. 1024x768 with Anti-Aliasing x 4 is the way to go with Combat Mission. Its very smooth. Again, be warned. To use the 1098x1098 pixels, the monitor screen format must be 16x9, which is wider than 4x3. CM units will be a bit wider, but the scenery is so cool when it fills more of your peripheral vision. I've gotten so used to it that CM looks normal on my wide screen, and appears too tall on everything else Oh yea, make sure you have a good video card. Voodoo5 and GeForce4 AA modes make CM look outstanding on it. Other cards were unsatisfactory.
  6. There you go and drag me into a thread I just will not participate in. If I did, I would tell you that I can’t dispute your response. I will however restate my point in another way. Its not “good versus bad”, but “us versus them”. And us is always good.
  7. This is a silly thread and I will not dignify it by posting to it. So there. If I did post, I would say the "good side" is the side I'm on. It ain't rocket science. [ July 16, 2002, 05:58 PM: Message edited by: kump ]
  8. Interesting, and just what one would suspect. There is a certain limit in what you see in the game itself. Going to be a joy going through the units and observing the textures. What I've seen so far is incredibly impressive. And there is so much more of it!
  9. No, I never got any indication that ops was not to be discussed, but I never asked either. There was a lot to check out with CMBB, and how ops was handled completely skipped my mind. Too busy looking at the new toys, bells, and whistles. There is just so much new and improved with CMBB, your bound to miss something.
  10. I was going to ask about texture sharing in a new thread, but this answered it for me. This is really great news! CMBO texture sharing was a source of annoyance, though the reason behind it was understood. More vehicles, hi-res, and less texture sharing means a much bigger bmp folder. You sure you will get it all on one CD? Heck, my current CMBO bmp folder is 1.6 Gig in size!
  11. Another mod comparison caught up on, this time Andrew Fox's Jeep mod. Cool mod. You haven't seen it? Where you been? You go, go take a look. Andrew Fox's Jeep Mod Page
  12. Got home and got the info on the monitor. Sony, Flat Panel Monitor, PFM-42B1/PFM-42B1E Don't forget that its format is 16x9 if you want the entire screen used, which is wider than standard TV and computer monitors of 4x3. I've gotten very used to it, but things are a little fatter. You can set it to 4x3, but you lose screen realistate on the sides. Since I'm finished with my computer room, I decided to work on another room. Here is another toy to get... I just can't decide on the color option.
  13. WineCape, I had that "monitor" for about a year, so maybe the price is still dropping. Its a plasma HDTV with two VGA connectors included with a host of other connector types. I wouldn't have bought the thing if it wasn't computer ready. I have a satellite hooked up to it so once in awhile I'll watch a movie or two on it. It wasn't cheap. At $8,000 USD, its a big commitment. It came with no mounting hardware at all. The metal bracket for mounting on the wall was itself an additional $250! I was pretty mad about that, but the salesman refused to just throw it in. However, there is a badness to it. My 21" monitor just seems so small now. Its amazing how you get accustomed to something and it becomes the norm.
  14. Sparky Rat, Good eye! But what is Combat Mission? Okay, updated and fixed. I sure wish I had someone to proof read first. Its only me and I'm biased. I like the author
  15. Naja: The air support is handled exactly as that in CMBO, in that you don't control it and you don't see it except for its shadow. The difference is that you get to select the type of fighter-bomber. And the type of strikes vary. The IL-2 will fly by first to observe the battle field. Then it will drop bombs, then rockets, then cannon fire. Then it will finally leave, but not before it has overstayed its welcome Hey! That's an idea, I'll update the third page about this info on CMBB report. I did get attacked by an Il-2, so I witnessed it working. Stingray: The N "next target" key is in CMBO as well. It cycles the valid targets. You don't have to lay the target line. Just keep hitting the N key and the target line will jump from one valid target to the next. 16. John, Alright, appears to be a NetScape issue, courtesy of MS not being fully HTML compliant (no surprise). I have modified some things, could you give it a shot. If that don't work, I have one more trick to try. aka_tom_w, Could you check too? And thanks for your glowing response. The work was for those fans who just found it too difficult to get to a preview site. Regards, Garry [ July 14, 2002, 11:24 PM: Message edited by: kump ]
  17. Thanks folks, I hope you got something more than what you already knew about CMBB. At least a few laughs anyway. John Kettler: I added another link just in case some can't get the picture hyperlink. Revisit the page and you can now click on the report title. Agua: Wolfe: I called it "Beyond Barbarossa" everywhere Even with the graphic right in front of my eyes with the correct title, I can't break the CMBO habit. Thanks, corrected. Wolfe: Well, I certainly didn't know the 'N' key worked in CMBO. Probably did at one time, but never use it. When I asked Jeff about it, he stated he really didn't know anything about it. Once I played with it and told him how it works, he said that even he hadn't known that. Well, guess I'm not the only one to not use it. Believe me, I think most will accept it as a "new feature" of CMBB if we say so I'm going to do the sneaky thing and remove it anyway before someone else educates me.
  18. Thanks Ron, just the kind of heads up I like to get. Updating now.
  19. CM Outpost Specials Page Yes, its another CMBB sneak peek report. This time its a web trip report at CM Outpost with photos of the event. I don't rite good, so bear with it. [ July 15, 2002, 07:45 PM: Message edited by: kump ]
  20. Okay, I've got several things going on, but I had to take a break to do something about a very talented MOD author that doesn't have his own spot on CM Outpost. Well, he does now. First of Andrew Fox's mods compared/reviewed on CM Outpost. Yea, I'm at it again... CM Outpost Go Straight to Andrew Fox's Page [ July 12, 2002, 10:43 AM: Message edited by: kump ]
  21. I'm going to have to dispute the fact that units don't surrender enough in CMBO. I think its fine the way it is. Most times its "broke" and "route" results, but that is another matter. I think that is spot on. As for surrender, I once had US paratroopers surround a company of German Heer troops, and I did have the superior numbers. I surrounded on three sides and to my surprise, the almost entire company surrendered! I'm talking units with no casualties raising their little arms up in mid game. I had never seen this before, but I rarely get enough time to completely box in the enemy like I had done. The units seem to surrender when they feel no other option is open, like being surrounded by superior forces where running is certain doom. Seems CMBO gets this right. Of course, strategically, a hell of a lot more surrendered, but I don't think CMBO can simulate that at all except when you surrender to your opponent because you know any further battle is just throwing away your little troopies digital lives, I mean, oh what the heck, they almost seem to have little digital lives.
  22. Pictures? I have a digital camera and thinking a CM Outpost CMBB sneak preview event page might be nice, and you think there might be pictures? Nah, the thought never crossed my mind. Already planned and emailed my intent. Got the nod, hours ago. Its too bad you won't be showing up yourself so I can get your mug in the shots
  23. Yes, please. I want to know who I'm going to have the pleasure to meet. Not all the poor slobs that live too far
  24. That's a biggy! Absolutely fantastic! I will admit, I'm a CMMOS addict. Off to download!
  25. Sorry about that Cos! Actually, the 42" Sony is a flat screen HDTV with a couple of VGA connectors, as well as an RGB set of connectors. It was computer ready and its what convinced me to spill the bucks for it, not being too much a TV watcher. Now my 21" NEC gets no use at all. The only problem with it is it causes neck ache when reading email Plus, at $8,000 a piece, they are not going like hot cakes. Lets hope idiots like me help the price to push even further down, in a year or two.
