Bummer. I just re-installed CMBO after a long absence, onto Win2k with the latest 4345 drivers and I get about 2fps. I refuse to roll-back as I just re-installed Windows so CMBO is going back in the cupboard.

New Web Site for Battlefront.com looks GREAT!
stodge replied to aka_tom_w's topic in Combat Mission Archive #4 (2002)
I love the new website except for one thing. By having the logo at the top in a different frame to the body, I'm losing a large percentage of screen real-estate. So to view anything I have to scroll down. I think I'm losing almost 1/3 of the screen due to that logo. Please remove the frames and just have the logo directly above the page contents. Other than that, looks great! -
I tried to play the CM demo under Winex (from CVS) but as soon as it gets into the 3D part of the game, it all goes horribly wrong. The main menus work fine though. It's a shame; I'd love to play it under Linux.

VIRUS ALERT! WARNING..VERY IMPORTANT!
stodge replied to Fieldmarshall's topic in Combat Mission Archive #4 (2002)
Hard luck - those things are a real pain in the arse. Luckily I use Linux, so when my fiancee received a dodgy email, I told her to forward it to me so I could examine it. Check out Symantec, Norton, and McAfee websites for info on getting you cleaned up. If your PC is infected badly. Hope you get it sorted out. -
Comment on battlefront.com website
stodge replied to stodge's topic in Combat Mission Archive #4 (2002)
I agree with Michael; fancy but a waste of my time. Completely useless - I have a rule that it shouldn't take more than 3 clicks to find the info I need. I don't know if this actually works, as I haven't quantified it, but that website was painful! -

<blockquote>quote:</font><hr>Originally posted by Soddball: I know what you mean. I view the site in 1024x768 and I still get a horizontal scroll bar, which looks dreadful and really ruins it. Maybe some Flash or Fireworks could improve matters. BTW Stodge, have you looked at the Jaguar website? What do you think?<hr></blockquote> Actually I'm not hugely impressed by Jaguar's website. I like the idea of the black, as it looks professional with some of the graphics and design that they use, but I don't like the menu buttons. Also I think the news page looks terrible with the boxes. If they replaced the menu buttons, and changed the news page, I'd like it quite a bit more. Oh and I trusted Battlefront with my credit card, and I would again. (Linux version?! ). I have a lot of respect for them due to Combat Mission, but they severly need to imrpove their image on the web. -
What have you done to it? I've been away from CM for a looong time, due to lack of free time, so I thought I'd check up on the game and its sequel. But the new site is dreadful! It's far too busy, and there is far too much on screen. My eyes don't know where to look. It reminds me of CMHQ, and I always thought that was badly designed. Please, please portray a more professional image for the company and the games than you are now. As further explanation as to why this is so important to me.. I've spent the last 3 months job searching, so I've looked at about 1000 company websites. I found a huge difference in quality of web design and presentation, and it always had an effect on my decision to approach each company for work. Please change what's there!

Battlefront.com makeover!
stodge replied to Panzer_Meyer's topic in Combat Mission Archive #4 (2002)
They need to get rid of the sandbag images; I find them very ugly and un-professional. -
How much are YOU upgrading for CM:BB?
stodge replied to Captain Wacky's topic in Combat Mission Archive #4 (2002)
I just upgraded my PC to Linux, so I guess I won't be playing CM for a while. -
I know that I'll get flamed for this, but I find it very difficult to read and navigate CMHQ - it's just too ugly and hard on my eyes. Sorry, had to get that rant off my chest.

Thanks for the address.

Rob/1, if you're still around please email me at mike@stodge.net. Thanks

For me it's the other way round - how often do I win! Usually I lose more than I win, although I'm proud of the victory I achieved against a ton of Allied armour.

Combat Mission vs G.I. Combat
stodge replied to Wyatt963's topic in Combat Mission Archive #3 (2001)
Wyatt, open code has nothing to do with user mods in Combat Mission. The user mods in CM replace graphics and sound and nothing else. The beauty of CM is that the graphic files they use are in a standard format, and not a proprietary or compressed format. All code (source) for CM is closed. Just wanted to clear that up. -
I can offer some webspace with anonymous ftp access if you want. Mail me on mike@stodge.net. http://www.stodge.net

mummy wheres my combat mission!?
stodge replied to Wolfcub's topic in Combat Mission Archive #3 (2001)
Leave us brits alone! Wolfcub get to bed, and no this isn't your mUmmy! -
Rob, I think because people don't know what your mod is, they're probably afraid of what the Zip file might contain. I imagine they're worried about viruses and trojans. One of the many wonderful benefits of using Windows. Maybe you could give a brief list or description of what is included in the Zip file; maybe which bitmaps you've changed. So if people know it's an interface mod, they might download it and try it.
-
If there's something you don't like about Rob's site (or anyone else's for that matter) then don't just bitch, complain or make fun of it; be constructive. It really annoy's me when people do that. If there's something that Rob forgot to do or include, then tell him. Explain it to him and help him learn.

Another Forward Observer Update!
stodge replied to SuperTed's topic in Combat Mission Archive #3 (2001)
How big is the image on the front page? Can you reduce its size? It takes several seconds to load on my ADSL connection. -

Are you trying to resize it? What program are you using to edit it? Paint Shop Pro, for example. -

Create a copy of one of your images, but resize it (shrink it) so twhen you save it, the filesize is extremely small. -

I think you should use a preview image, which is about 10-30k, rather than force people to download the 300k images you have. That way people will be more inclined to go back from time to time. Also, it relieves the load on my server!
