  3. Didn't we have shellburts in the trees in CMBO?
  4. I finally got a chance to try it out (got my copy 2 days ago and didn't get to play until this morning). I tried out an assault scenario with the Uberfinns. I got bogged down by Russian MGs every time I tried to advance, and failed to reach the flag. After the game ended, I checked the map to find out which units were hurting my guys, expecting to find lots of HMGs and AT guns. To my horror discovered that LMGs and antitank guns strategically placed to suppress entire axes of advance were the culprits! Splendid! The MG improvements alone make CMBB a great game for me. Great job BFC!
  5. Actually we're gonna get it Weds night or Thursday from what the local meteorologists are saying. If you're not prepared now, forget it, as the stores empty out pretty quick every time this happens (we're already set). And yes, it is serious if you're on low ground (I'm not) although the wind damage may get me instead.
  6. Mine just arrived in Southern Louisiana! Of course it's just in time for Hurricane Isidor to come and take my house off the slab. I guess that's why they make laptops (I can still play CMBB while evacuating). Edit: so excited I can't spell [ September 23, 2002, 04:41 PM: Message edited by: Mannheim Tanker ]
  7. Ah...I see that we're comparing members - er - member numbers again. It's not the size of your member number that's important, it's how you use it that counts. If size mattered, JasonC would be crawling with babes judging from the size of his posts, but we all know that's not happening.
  8. Good call. Also, Slapdragon is working on a similar, smaller CMMC.
  9. First, CMBB is a strategy game, not a role playing game. I fail to see the strategic or tactical prowess necessary to liberate an undefended camp. Second, a computer game can never show the gruesome scenes of the holocaust in such a manner as to put them into proper context. Third, if you think the holocaust was "cool", seek help.
  10. In this game anyway. I've played other strategic wargames where the French stopped the German invasion in its tracks (albeit with heavy French/British losses).
  11. Just curious how you came to this conclusion. Historically, France had a formidable army. Their loss in 1940 was due as much to poor leadership as any inherent weakness in their strategic position. Does anyone else care to comment on this?
  12. The naval combat and supply models in SC are totally unsuited for island hopping campaigns at this scale. The problem is quite similar to that in TOAW. I'd love to see a game that got this right, but it'll probably never happen since there isn't enough demand.
  13. That one isn't much more exciting. A new texture and new icons, but it's still basically the same map.
  14. You can still use a flat map if you simply use a different projection. There will always be a tradeoff, even with a globe (you can't see everything at once on a globe without distortion either). You need to ask yourself which attribute can you afford to distort: true direction, true distance, shape/area, continuity. Once you answer that question, it's easy to choose the projection. IMO, a globe isn't all that useful in a game of this scale, and the distortions that you are referring to don't really affect game play much. So much is already abstracted (units, stacking, etc) that the slight loss of accuracy due to projection-induced distortions is neglible. Also, the map is already pretty the way it is. Edit: Agreed that a different map setup is necessary for a worldwide game. I was referring to the current version of SC. [ June 26, 2002, 08:39 AM: Message edited by: Mannheim Tanker ]
  15. Wrong again, Straha! It's not "very, very soon", but just very soon . j/k
  16. Glad to hear it! This was one fear that I had when I first learned about SC. As in Axis and Allies, there will always be players looking for the "perfect" game using a tired old list of preset moves to make that will yield x result. I think it would be great if there was an option to slightly randomize the starting forces to reduce the chance of this happening. I mean, how much fun can it really be to play a game with someone that uses the same series of moves on turns 1 through 10 in each game.
  17. You can attack the Swiss in Europe Aflame too, but I wouldn't recommend it. The Swiss forces are modeled more accurately, and they tend to grind your Axis teeth down to the point that it's not worth the losses for what little you gain. Dug in mountain troops can really wear down the attacker (just ask the Yugoslavian partisans!).
  18. Personally, my vote for a map projection would be an Albers Equal Area projection using a false easting and northing-based coordinate reference system. (j/k) Good point re: the size and placement of N. American though, all kidding aside. The practical limitation of having NA so close to Europe is that German subs tend to get easily sandwiched between the two land masses (and the ships and planes patrolling them) that it can be really tough to sneak subs and ships through the Atlantic. It should be tough, but it seems a little "tight" to me.
  19. I agree. Even if he hadn't included it, I have to give him credit for even bothering to debate the issue (among dozens of others) with this ungrateful mob. Edit: this is in stark contrast with other game forums (fora?) that I've read, most notably SSI. [ June 06, 2002, 06:32 PM: Message edited by: Mannheim Tanker ]
  20. Great, thanks! That was my biggest criticism of the game, otherwise it's a lot of fun. Sign me up for a copy.
  21. Spoken like a parent who has the candy behind his back while the two year olds throw tantrums. Seriously, I can only speak for myself, but just based on the amount of entertainment contained in the demo, I will be buying at least two copies of SC (I might have the honor of having the first quasi-pre release order, last month my brother's birthday gift was a certificate redeemable for a copy). The no-opponent-move-replay thing would be a negative in my book, but it wouldn't kill the game for me. One thing I've learned as I get older and moldier is that very few things in life are exactly the way I would like them. Hell, I've even learned to tolerate things I really didn't use to like. So if the replay movie turns out to be the cauliflower of SC, I'm not going to let is spoil my meal.</font>
  22. OK, I understand. This gets back to the free setup issue in general. By limiting us to all these default setups, we don't get to make these choices. Maybe not a big deal with the minors, but certainly for Italy and Russia.</font>
