Stoffel, Well, I've never had CM crash at all even before I upgraded. If you only have 60% resources free after closing everything then it doesn't sound right to me. With background programs running with win98, 128meg RAM I have 73% free on the net with netscape, ProDSL, Download Accel. all running too. Like Charles said, make sure you have all the latest drivers installed, run scandisk and defrag and see how that goes. after that you might try getting rid of junk files etc...with a program like system mechanic, but I don't think stuff like that would cause a crash. ------------------ "It's a hardball world son. Hiya, I really didn't notice too much of a difference with DX7.0a either. I just recently upgraded to a TNTII 32meg from a banshee and I noticed a BIG increase in the graphics but not so much in smoothness. I then went from 64meg RAM to 128meg and suddenly I'm skimming across the battlefield with NO skips or pauses at all! I don't know what your system has but my little story might help you out a bit. btw I am running an AMD K6-2-450 and still have win95(that's gonna change tomorrow though) I hope for even more of an improvement. also, can't you find older drivers on your video card makers website? I got a tip on a great site that offers tips on tweaking 3d performance Tweak3D.net you might try that. ------------------ "It's a hardball world son. Hiya Rob, You're probably going to have to get a little more specific so someone can help you. What kind of sound card do you have? What are your system specs? I finally upgraded from my old banshee card to a TNTII. I got the new detonator drivers and they installed without a hitch. I would like to know what the settings do and maybe some setting you guys use with CM. I know it will be different for everyone but that might give me an idea of tweaks I can do. Thanks to Maximus for suggesting the TNTII in posts about video cards, it really stuck in my mind btw..the trasparent smoke and buildings look great! ------------------ "It's a hardball world son. Sounds like you will need to upgrade several things at the same time. New CPU=new MainBoard and RAM. I suppose that a new video card would run with the Pentium class chip but that ram you have now is going to be the sticking point. I guess it all depends on how much you want/have to spend. I started off with an old 386 many years ago and kept upgrading and upgrading and I'm still upgrading Anyway, I'd do at least two of the things you need to...video+ram or MB+cpu+ram maybe a package deal on the net? how about AMD? they are cheaper than intel for sure. AMD is what allowed me to upgrade at a faster pace...and of course if you can install everything yourself you save alot of money too. ------------------ "It's a hardball world son. On the Banshee question: I have a banshee card and the game runs fine except the high quality smoke is just a larger version of the low quality smoke and no transparant buildings. I'm hoping for fathers day I'll get a video card upgrade I had to check compatability with AMD so it looks like a TNT2 ultra will do the trick...I've seen them on the net for around $150-180. btw, I don't have the opening screen problem that was mentioned. the game works great just can't get the extra eyecandy. ------------------ "It's a hardball world son. I think the damage graphic would be hard to do because, if I recall, the vehicle graphics are reversed from side to side...Meaning what you see on the right side is the left side reversed? make sense? so you would have a hole going all the way through the tank? Yep, not only has CM taken over my wargaming but every other game...I can't wait. You know, in some strange way I almost wish I had just learned of CM...Then I wouldn't have to wait too long to get it!

I haven't had to 'explain' it to her. She knows I enjoy playing wargames and indeed knew that before we were married. She actually thinks that CM is the best looking and sounding of all the games I've played. What I DO have to explain to her is why I keep checking the mailbox and the email and the message board...I try to get her to play a game once in a while too but she prefers Age of Kings. The first time I asked her to play a hotseat game with me she kinda looked at me funny and over at our 5year old son....I don't think she grasped the concept. Ok, they look GREAT! but...if I can't see the truely translucent smoke (monster fusion 16meg video) it seems to just use a bigger version of the low quality smoke. What will the new explosions look like? I suppose if they use the now old (I always thought the explosions looked great anyway) version it's ok...but this is just making me want to spend money I don't have on a new video card. Missing out on one or two things is ok..but now I might be missing out on the cool explosions too... Just my luck I guess...all the crappy but visually great games I have bought have all worked without a hitch and now a great playing and visually stunning game comes along and things won't work for me. ahhh, the arrival of 'the box'. I feel it will be a time to be savored and enjoyed.
