1. Does that kitchen sink come with faucets featuring both warm and cold SHUT THE HELL UP? citizen
2. I was under the impression that after The Wargamer embarrassed themselves with the 6 month old review of CM that they would try harder and edit before they posted. Well, if you go over there now ( www.wargamer.com ), you'll find the following statement regarding the Gold Demo (which they just posted on 10 June): "Battlefront has also released an updated demo. The new demo shows off improvements to the game system, but unfortunately contains the same two scenarios that the original demo had." Looks like their N64 & DreamCast Editor drew the short straw and was handed the dreaded chore of reporting on CM. Matt
3. Excellent work! The pictures that accompany the descriptions are a nice touch. One thing that I would ask (and I ask it of all scenario designers)... Please add a 5 word note to your scenario/operation descriptions that tell the reader which side to play first if playing solo. Some scenarios have "big surprises" waiting and it's a shame to lose that element by playing the un-surprised side first. Adding a line like: "Solo: Play as Axis 1st" would suffice. Remember "Last Defense" (Beta Demo)? It was much better to play as Germans 1st so you are surprised by the arrival of the 3 Hellcats. Thanks, Matt
4. I don't think it's an aspect of human behaviour or nature, but a result of it. Matt "God help me I do love it so."
5. Better to have 4 different scenario sections: 1. "Balanced" scenarios that would make for "fair" PBEM games. 2. Historical scenarios 3. "Different" or "just for fun" scenarios 4. Operations There's no reason to not post any kind of scenario that someone makes. With 4 catagories, there'd be a place for every scenario to go. No need to have 2 people or a committee review scenarios. Just let the players rate the scenario after playing it (on a scale from 1-5). Once a few ratings have been compiled and averaged, you'll know how well the designer did. The TOAW scenario center goes by player ratings and that works just fine. Matt
6. I'm looking forward to: Huge ass battle fields Night Fighting Random Map/Forces Generator And taking several sick days when it arrives on my doorstep. I've saved up 200+ sick hours just while waiting for CM to come out. Matt
7. Guys, It's "Beyond Overlord," so you won't get it on your doorstep until at least June 7th. Matt
8. + VoT spoilers + I've seen the AI do some really smart things... I'm playing VoT as Germans with Allies having a +50% edge. My 75 is in the default position and for 3 turns was getting the runaround by 2 Shermans. They would alternately creep out into LOS, fire twice, then pop smoke and reverse behind cover. The 75's slow traverse tried to keep up, but failed. I had to call in a bunch of smoke to keep the bunker out of their LOS. Meanwhile the troops are attacking massed -not piecemeal. The AI sent out scouts, found my barbed wire (and possibly my AP minefield) and rerouted his troops to avoid them. Matt
9. There will be many D-Day scenarios. They will be user-made. There may even be one that ships with the game. Combat Mission: Beyond Overlord doesn't focus on one battle or the whole war. It focuses on the west front Normandy to Germany. Matt
10. Hope it wasn't too serious. Hope you get well soon, Larry. Sara, you are lucky this happened before the full game arrived or you'd find the hospital bill had a $3000 charge for "Consulting Dr. Laptop" added to it. Matt
11.
quote:
Once they drop you will always be able to see them, just like knocked out vehicles...

And for a dose of reality and humanity... assume that there are cries for help coming from that spot and a medic toiling away. Not hard to keep tabs on that even if you don't have LOS. Matt
12. Whoa, I just saw some dead bodies in the POTD at CMHQ 5/1. I must be sleepy or something Matt
13. Wargamer and PvK: Please attempt to save a little bit of face and take down that shoddy article. It makes you look bad. It will surely act as a warning to other wargame companies to deny you a preview copy if this is the treatment they can expect. You tried to fix it, but it was never worth saving. Matt
14. I choose mine as an homage to one of my all-time favorite TV shows: "The Prisoner" ; and to one of my favorite roleplaying games: Paranoia. The other reason I like it is that it's impossible to form an opinion about me based on the name. If my name was BloodThirsty, you'd think you knew something about me. Matt
15.
quote:
CNN.com has reported that Hasbro has put up The Learning Company up for sale.

Actually, Mattel owns The Learning Company. Hasbro owns Avalon Hill, Microprose, and Wizards of the Coast. Matt
16. I was just watching the intro movie at work. A co-worker happened by and watched it over my shoulder. He asked if that was a preview for a new Pixar movie or something. That's quite a compliment. Matt
17. This sure seems like the end of the month update. I can't imagine that there is any bigger news than a release window. Matt
18. 1. Suggestion Instead of having the player name be an email link, have the namelink lead to a profile that lists stuff like (all optional): Real Name ICQ # email address Side Preference Map and terrain preferences Size of forces/points preferences Frequency of PBEM turns ( 1/day; 3/day; only on weekends ) 2. I will play some non-ladder games. I used to play Case's Ladder for SMGettysburg and CC2, but didn't like the crap the competitiveness brought. However, I have gotten to know the players here better than back then, so I may play more ladder. Two problems I've found with ladders: A. Mysterious "game crashes." Won't be a problem with turn-based CM. B. Top players don't play newbies. This could be a problem with CM as the games take a lot longer than real-time games, so players will be more selective in choosing opponents. Matt
19. I had the same problem a while back with my Voodoo 3. I played for weeks at 640 x 480 (and was still recommending the game to everyone I know). One day I went to my Program Files, then into a the Direct X folder. Inside that was a Direct X Setup icon. Clicking on that immediately brought up a box giving me the option to turn on Direct 3D Acceleration Hardware. Not sure why it was off, but after switching it to on, I'm now playing at 1152 x 864. Matt
20. That's the best use of the Smilies I've seen. Funny stuff. Matt
21. I work at Wizards of the Coast (makers of Magic: The Gathering, D&D and Pokemon) and managed to get a blurb about CM into the March issue of our card gaming magazine: Top Deck. I doubt anyone here gets the mag, but it's on page 18. The mag just got back from the printers and will hit shelves in about a week. It has a circulation of around 200,000. The editors also included a teeny-tiny picture of the Last Defense Tiger from the CM homepage. I hope that was OK. I didn't know they were going to use a pic. I figure every little bit helps. Anyone else managed any CM blurbs in unlikely places? Matt [This message has been edited by citizen (edited 02-11-2000).]
22. I'll just thank you right now. I respect the decision to not release it early and patch it later (or not). I wish I didn't even have to write that but BTS is one of the few that seem to have respect for the customer. Matt PS: So we can hold you accountable for our monitors burning out?
23. Sounds like those Typhoons could see the sun reflect off the binoculars of the FOs. That's not a bug. It's a feature. Matt
24. I could tell it was a fake, 'cuz everyone knows that BTS will ship international orders on a Thursday and US orders on the following Monday. Us Amis don't deserve to get it two weeks before y'all. Just one week. Matt (who ordered an in-stock music CD from the UK and got it 6 weeks later)
